Unmatched Quality - Unmatched Customer Service

The mic itself is incredible. Having spent over a decade purchasing, researching, and singing into high-quality recording microphones (I recorded an album using Brian Wilson's Neumann U47), I can say that the AEA microphones are miles ahead of the competition. From the moment I took the microphone out of the box I was in love. The construction is solid, the mic is nice and heavy, and the included carrying case is well made.

I can't describe the sound too well with words. Anything I could say would admittedly be a platitude. If you're recording vocals, and need a high-quality ribbon microphone to capture them. This is the one you should get.

I'm running mine through a BAE 1272 preamp (early model). The combination is stellar, but I think the mic would perform well through a variety of preamps.

    Great Character

This is a great ribbon mic with loads of character. I have many other ribbons including other AEA's and a Coles 4038, and this is probably my favorite overall. It just has something special that none of the others have, making instruments and vocals sound really huge, yet with an understated glossy sheen. It really sounds very classy, in a different way than the 4038. I wouldn't recommend it for a lot of modern pop music, but it's incredible for rootsy folk, rock, jazz, or blues. I particularly love it on vocals, acoustic instruments, and drums (FOK, room, or OH). Just be aware that you won't be doing a lot of close-micing with the R44, as it has a huge proximity effect (up to 6 feet I believe), so use it to your advantage with proper placement. Oh, and buy a heavy duty mic stand- it weighs more than my newborn son :)
