The Royer R122V is my be-all, end-all microphone for cellos, violins, and violas. Nothing sounds more detailed, warm, rich and natural than this mic. It handles the transient response of classical instruments in a way that is not only detailed but very pleasing to the human ear.
I've been a fan of Royer microphones since the first time I used them to track guitar and fiddle in Nashville. That's when I fell in love with the R-122V. As soon as I heard what this tube ribbon mic could do, I had to have one. The R-122V lets me take the harsh and abrasive edge off of electric guitars and strings, leaving me with smooth and mellow tracks I can use. Unlike many condenser microphone, it captures guitar amps beautifully, without getting lost in translation.
What can I say, this mic is incredible. Put it in front of a cranked guitar cab, or use it on drum overheads, violins, acoustic guitar, etc. Great for when you want to capture a lush sound with clarity and detail without it being overly bright or harsh.
