    the secret magic

This thing is great, all sections can be used separately.this has no noticeable self noise when all cranked to max unlike other budget gear. the VU meter is crap though. The trick for the magic sound with this unit is to set it in low voltage mode then ride first gain knob to maintain the vocals right on the last yellow led as much as possible, occasionally touching the red sounds good in dense mixes, MAGIC. Better than multi-thousand dollar units. Wouldn't mind a version of this box with full parametric eq as the broadness and narrowness of the Q seems too much or too little often. The eq is pretty transparent and uncolored This thing is solid heavy metal well built. I leave compressor in auto mode almost always.

    Only 300 bucks?

This thing will take a decent sounding signal and make it sound great. With vocals I have an annoying 1.5 kHz nasally tone that you can easily dial out and have a smooth sound. the tube preamp has a real hot bite that sounds pretty legit. The compressor works well also. I had some issues getting noise at first. warm it up and its clear as a whistle.

    Incredible value!

I bought this with high expectations and it met them in essentially every way. The only thing is it makes noise (my unit at least) when the compressor bypass switch is enabled.

Otherwise the sounds is great and the EQ and compression are very complimentary to vocals of any kind and acoustic guitar miking. And all that at an unbelievable price, and you can always replace the foreign tubes with tubes of your choice!

    Highly recpmended.

    Really Useful

I have been using 2 of these as my main inputs for over a year now. Cab/Room, Top/Bottom on perc., Soundhole/Fingerboard, Etc. Using various mic's and getting really useful results. I like them configured as channel strips like this vs. separate pre & compressor. Easy for signal chain into DAW. They work very nice and are low noise, smooth sounding. I did replace the stock tubes with some JJ's, thought it sounded a little better.

    what a nice addition

What a nice addition to my recording set-up! Having this many features in one channel strip allows me to "tailor" a dedicated microphone to the vocal needs of the main person who uses that mic. The preamp really makes the mic "react", the compressor offers lots of tailoring to keep the levels and sibilants in check, and the equalizer section offers such a wide range of vocal adjustment, that I have to do almost nothing to the vocals once they go into my DAW. I have only recently purchased, and begun to use this unit, but am very pleased with what I have been able to do with it thus far. I am certain that as I become more familiar with it, I will be able to "fine-tune" it even better to fit the needs for which I bought it. And, of course, Ryan at Sweetwater could not have been more helpful. Plus, I ordered it on a Friday afternoon, and it was delivered the next day. If anyone is looking for a mic preamp, and understands there is more to running a condenser mic than just phantom power, I would highly recommend this unit. If you are short on experience with using the components that this unit has, have someone read the owners manual out loud to you while you are looking at the unit. Then start turning knobs and pushing buttons while you're recording someone, and see what changes are made, and which ones you like versus which ones you don't like. I believe that there are enough quality sound shaping options available to please the most discriminant recording person. Of my three mic preamps, this one offers the most (and best) of what I have been looking for.

    Grounding issue

After some trouble shooting the preamp sounded great. A word to the wise: the ground is most likely chase connected and therefor in a typical rack mount, a 60 htz buzz is very audible. Use an unbalanced cable for the output and the ground is decided by a mixer or board, and the problem is solved.
