Whatever you need for sound reinforcement, you can find it at Sweetwater! The PZM-30D pressure zone microphone from Crown is perfect for mounting overhead or on conference tables or desks. It features clean high frequencies and uniform polar response, and also has switchable dual frequency response - meaning that while in the "rising"position the PMZ-30D gives you brilliance on the high end, while in the "flat" position the sound is. . .well, "flat" with a smooth, natural high frequency response.

Mounted It On The Drum Kit And Crushed The Signal

I purchased this to emulate some of the live drum sounds from Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral." Rather than rely on close mics, the predominant sound came from wall-mounted PZMs run into "smash" compression. This nailed that style!

state of the art

I recorded my wife at school with a class of 7 year olds singing several songs.I just in those days had a tape deck and used 2 pzm flat mics taped to the wall and a bog standard 2 mics out front. It was magic! One of the girls parents who owned one of the biggest studios in London ( clients including Macca and Genesis ) said it was one of the best recordings he had heard !!!

As Room Mics..

These are great if you know how to use them.. Whatever surface you put them on will act as the diaphragm...I personally taped 2 to a glass wall about 15 feet from a drum kit - in a moderately live room - and I've never been so impressed by a completely dry room tone. 5 stars for these underestimated gems!

Crown PZM's

I have used all kinds of microphones in my life on both drums overheads, acoustic guitars, acoustic Bass, etc..
I found that the pzm's area true as you can get reproduction of the sound source as I have ever heard.
When I used condensor mikes for cymbals, It always changed my snare sound, and caused phase problems. I always had to spend a lot of time equalising. With Pzm's I put the mikes 2 ' away from the cymbals, and it sounds awesome flat. Try This, you will be amazed with the results.

I'm a believer!

I arrived at the auditorium to record a symphony orchestra in the the pit. My plans were dashed when I saw about 20 more musicians shoehorned in there than the pit was designed to hold, so, no way to allocate any real estate to floor stands. I decided not to venture into the pit at all and simply gaff taped a pair of these D30's on the pit wall on either side of the conductor, approx 7' apart. Thought that this would at least be good enough for the University's archive. Wow, was I surprised at the recording I got. Now this is my primary setup but I usually supplement this technique with a couple of spot mics. Two thumbs up! If you understand how they work and use them correctly you'll be impressed.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Stuart Niven

Yes, you can use this as a conference microphone and yes, it is an amazing mic, flat and present but real. However... the day I ventured to throw this baby two feet in front of a drum set, on the floor, in a tunnel made out of a blanket and introduced the signal to my close friend, the compressor, set it to nuke, I have never been the same since. Serious wow factor when you sneak that bad boy up in mono in a mix behind the drum set! Too much? I think not!
