DW Quality, An Amazing Price!

Delivering unbelievable resonance and projection thanks to DW's proprietary HVX shell, Performance Series drums provide you with great sound at a real-world price. Built from a blend of eight plies (10 plies on the snare) of hand-selected North American hard rock maple, they dole out solid, thunderous punch every time you step onstage. On top of that, you get a scaled-down version of DW's trademark turret lug, as well as onboard True-Pitch tuning and 45-degree back-cut bearing edges. The DW Performance Series drums are an amazing value.

DW Performance Series at a Glance:

  • Punchy tones from HVX maple shells

  • Engineered for superior sound
Punchy tones from HVX maple shells

The Performance Series HVX shells blend horizontal, vertical, and diagonal plies of hand-selected North American hard rock maple and are voiced to give you solid low mids with a lot of punch and articulation. You'll find that these drums offer resonance and projection that's perfect for live performance. The maple shells give your sound definition and great response. You won't have to fight with mushy tones that get lost in the mix either, thanks to maple's natural brightness and clarity. Add a powerful punch and attack to your kit with the DW Performance Series.

Engineered for superior sound

Gain more control over your tuning and your tone with DW's Performance Series. True-Pitch tuning rods use a tighter threaded tension rod so you can more precisely intonate your kit. True-Pitch tuning rods have 20% more threads than common tuning rods, so the DW Performance Series drums can be tuned more precisely than most drums on the market. Plus, DW endowed the Performance Series drums with their STM suspension tom mount. This patented system allows your toms to resonate freely, maximizing the tonality while keeping the drum securely in place. And the 45-degree back-cut bearing edge minimizes contact with the drum head, which allows the head and the shell to resonate more freely for incredible sound. At Sweetwater we understand the importance of value, and we're confident that you'll be impressed at how much drum you get for the money with the DW Performance Series!

Real World Review

I recently purchased the DW performance in this configuration along with a separate 18X24 bass drum. I have owned Pearl Masters, Mapex Orions and Yamaha custom series drums. Based on the placards glued inside of each drum these are now made in the USA. The pros and cons as I see them compared to other sets I've owned: The hardware is solid and heavy. No light weight or flimsy feel to any of it. Even the floor tom legs are thicker and heavier compared to other pro sets I've owned. The photos on the website do not do justice to the cherry stain finish. The gloss finish is great and each drum looks like a fine piece of furniture in its own right. The heads are better quality than what you get on most factory sets and produce a good sound, however, I am old school and prefer a more 70's fat sound. Changing the tom batter heads to Evans clear hydraulics, and a dry, vented head on the snare produced great lows on the toms without much overtone and a nice full sound with the snare once tuned to my preference. Tuning is accurate. I use a tension watch to ensure even tuning at my desired settings and if you've never used one, try it, it will make a difference in how good your drums will sound. The only con, and this is purely subjective, is the cost compared to some of the other pro-sets available in the market. I don't know that they sound better than some of the other pro-sets, but that has to be left up to the individual. Over-all there is no doubt the drums are high quality in construction, hardware, and finish. In fact, comparing these next to the DW collectors series, I personally would buy these and use the savings toward quality cymbals, etc.. If you don't mind the cost, you won't be disappointed!
