Everything a student needs to get started - and then some

As with previous Yamaha PSR models, the EW400 is a tremendous value for players who are just getting started. A solid-feeling keybed helps students learn how to navigate the core of a piano and work on their technique for acoustic instruments, organs, and synths. A convincing grand piano model brought to life by a pair of rich stereo speakers makes practice time enjoyable. And the included Yamaha Education Suite will teach your favorite beginner the essentials of the piano and a wide range of piano standards in no time.

Onboard FX and harmony modes take advantage of the PSR-EW400's 48-note polyphony

The EW400's expanded 48-note polyphony means you can play more complex chords and melodies without dropping notes. And more notes means more effect modes, too: nine types of onboard reverb and four choruses let you add piano-hall ambience to your concert performances and smooth jazz modulation to your electric pianos. The EW400's 26 types of harmonization are a useful compositional and recording tool, allowing you to workshop major, minor, and parallel harmonies without being a theory expert.

Advanced features cater to intermediate students and professionals

The Yamaha EW400 grows alongside you as you learn. Performers and songwriters will appreciate the 220 onboard accompaniment styles. These styles include Brazilian, Indian, Chinese, and more. Each intelligent backing track adjusts automatically to the notes you play, making it easier than ever to accompany yourself and flesh out song ideas. USB and aux inputs let you play along with pre-recorded backing tracks or music from your phone, and USB Host/Device capability makes it easier than ever to record MIDI and music directly into your computer or tablet.

I Love This Keyboard

I use this keyboard at the moment mainly as a piano, and love the grand piano sound, which is better than that of the others in this model lineup. The extra power in the speakers is great and I find the ability to play my iPod through the keyboard very useful for working out tunes. The real time control knobs can be set so that one of them controls the volume from the iPod, which is very handy. The recorder allows me to record one hand, and then play that back while working on the other hand. Very useful. I downloaded all of the songs for this keyboard and the songbook and that will keep me busy for long time. I put the downloaded midi files on my thumb drive, and when I plugged in the drive the songs showed up in the song menu without a hitch. The keys have a great feel, and are lighter than real piano keys, which is desirable, since you might want to play a fast flute or percussion riff, where the weight of real piano keys could get in the way. All-in-all a great keyboard that I expect will serve me well for a long time.

Incredible Service!

First time for everything! I received the Yamaha PSR-EW400 last December as a Christmas gift...Loved the board, but for some reason, the C above Middle C began to sound softer than the other notes around it..It is an intermittent situation .If it were an octave or so higher, i might not have discovered it...However, I called Daniel Vranic, my Sales Engineer at Sweetwater. He immediately sent me out a new one with a return label for the broken board...I received it yesterday, Friday, the 10th of March and will be returning the old one via Fed-Ex on the 13th...I am astounded by their service! Thanks Sweetwater!

Great Keyboard

I have had arthritis in my hands that becomes very irritated when I play the action of an acoustic or digital piano. I needed something that would play lighter and be easier on my finger joints. And along with a good piano sound, I needed some other features that would make the music more interesting. The PSR-EW400 is a wonderful instrument. I read several reviews where this keyboard was described as being for "Beginners." Nothing could be farther from the truth....True, it is easy to play and figure out, so why would I want to spend a fortune on something more difficult to operate and the sounds are not that much better? The "live grand piano" is so realistic. The Rhythms or background rhythms are very nicely done and add to the music....Most of my audiences are elderly. I play exclusively for senior centers on a free basis. I am involved in 5 different venues at least 20 times per month, so I get a lot of practice. The folks in my audiences love the sound of the keyboard! It is easy to carry. I also bought a Gator 76 key case for the instrument....It is heavy duty and will protect your keyboard. There are plenty of pockets in which you can place your rack, adaptor, foot pedal and books...plenty of room and the case is vey durable. Thanks Daniel Vranic for being a great Sales Engineer for Sweetwater!! Merry Christmas!

Capable Keyboard

EW400 replaced a 1999 Yamaha PSR-248, a very durable machine. The upgrade was rewarding because for recording purposes, EW400 eliminates the unwanted resonance from many voices. Its sax/flute selections are unbelievably true with even the "player's" breathing worked in for extended notes! The DSP controls and the pitch-wheel tailor voices with dare or subtlety found on "pro" keyboards. While not listed as a feature, the keys are better weighted. For rehearsals, the speakers are underwhelming; but the conveniently set up 2-way exchange with a computer plus the 6 tracks available on board will allow one to leave the laptop home. EWR400 faithfully reproduces the analog Yamaha baby grand sound, which I'm not a fan off; but of course, I can tailor that with the DSP very easily, too.
