Completely Blown Away!
When my DW kit arrived from Sweetwater, I had set aside an evening for replacing and tuning drum heads. To my wonderful surprise I had the stocks heads off, new heads on, tuned and playing in under 30 minutes! Tighten the lugs with your fingers, then add a couple of turns with a drum key and you're done! I've ALWAYS had to use dampening of some kind to get rid of boingy overtones - well no longer my friends!
I have 2 snares that I absolutely love, so naturally, I was skeptical about a "stock" snare. The DW Performance snare drum is one of the most impressive aspects of this kit! The crack is enough to tip a cow - in a field - 3 miles away. I'd bought my preferred stick side head and haven't even bothered putting it on; it sounds so darn good! The only thing I did was tighten the bottom head a little and it was studio ready. The Mag Throw-off is super quiet while engaging and disengaging the snares in a hurry.
The toms sound like they're straight off of a Greek battleship! Thunderous attack. Clean overtones. Completely musical decay. Toms are always the thorn in my side when tuning - until now. I have actually ENJOYED tuning the DW Performance Series toms up and down, just to see what sounds I can get out of them!
The heart and soul of the DW Performance Series drum set is the kick. The ONLY muffling this titan needs are the two, small dampening pillows DW includes with the kit. One gently kissing the beater head, the other just getting to know the resonance head. I don't think I've ever heard a kick drum sing like this before! Gut kicking attack, that apologizes with a warm hug that hangs around just long enough to make you happy, without overstaying it's welcome.
Bottom line: Don't wait. This is the kit for you. The price you pay for the quality of drums cannot be beat! Other than the slightly smaller hardware, you'd never know that this was line below the Collector's Series. They really do sound that good. If you're still on the fence, hop over to YouTube and look up the DW channel, and watch one of the Factory Tour video with John Good. I promise you'll be impressed.
