    HX/DA the ultimate plexi

    I just finished a two hour jam session with my HX/DA that I have lived with for the past 7 months and I decided it's time to post a review. This is the sweetest yet one of the least forgiving amps I have plugged into. It truly rewards you for playing as cleanly and expressively as possible. EVERYTHING you do is amplified VERY nakedly! It's touch response is AMAZING!!! It is very sensitive to what you plug into it, so your settings for a Lester are going to be very different from your strat which will be different from your tele. This is a pure handwired masterpiece! The three mini toggles are incredibly useful for tayloring your tone to your wishes! I recommend this amp to any session or stage player who needs that plexi magic in a modern reliable amp!

    Fantastic Amp

    I've been making a living in the music industry for 6 years now. 3 of which this hxda has been my main road and studio amp. There's just nothing negative to say about it. My sound is acquired by playing fender style guitars through Marshall style amps. The plexi sound on this amp is absolutely spot on. Highly recommended from me.

    HXDA = my main amp

    Incredible amp. Nails classic rock tones. Very high quality, good worksmanship. The treble/mid/bass/presence controls are tonally very similar to my old Marshall. BUY THIS AMP!!!

    HXDA - A good choice

    First off, if you're reading this review, you probably have done some homework on this amp and watched a variety of youtube videos to try to hear what it sounds like. Simply put - this is PRS's version of a vintage Marshall plexi. You know that chainsaw snarl sound you hear with Rich Robinson's guitar from the Black Crowes? This is that sound. Obviously there's more to it - as it faithfully reproduces the sound of Duane Allman's amp at Fillmore East (only if you play a LP through it!). I bought this amp to expand my collection and to allow me to play a 50w at larger venues. I would not buy this amp if you are still "experimenting" with sounds (unless you want to blow a bunch of cash). This amp should have a comparible personality to your style of guitar playing if you like the Black Crowes or the Allman Brothers. This amp is suited for classic rock (late 60s, 70s Marshall stack tone). The HX/DA buttons are more subtle - they do not produce an obvious sonic change, but rather change the fragrance of the sound that's coming out of the amp. For a 50w amp with EL34s and 12AX7s, this is spot on.

    HXDA

    First, let me start by saying this amp sounds nothing like a 68 Plexi.
    It actually sounds more like a late 70's JMP 50 w/master volume tone.
    Those amps cost around $1200 to $1400 on the used market.
    It really does not matter how you play this amp or where the switches are set.
    The amp sounds fundamentally the same everywhere.
    There is no lead/bass Plexi tone to be found anywhere in this amp.
    The HXDA also has a very stiff feel.. as in not much fun to play if you know what I mean.
    I think The PRS videos make this amp sound better than it really does.
    I guess I'll keep searching for a more authentic Plexi tone. What a disappointment.
    Bill
