SM57’s less hyped sibling

Good, solid construction. As for the tonality, it sounds like a 57 just with less mojo. I don"t mean that in a bad way, just imagine the curves of 57"s response and make them less extreme, that"s the PGA57. Alittle less low end than a 57, comes in handy for bassy amplifiers. Unless you absolutely need a SM57, get 2 of these for the price of one!

Surprisingly good.

This has got to be one of the best kept secrets in dynamic microphones.

I got this as part of the PGA5 drum mic kit. I didn't like it on my particular snare (tuned high), but as an all-a-rounder, it is shockingly good. I keep it out in my home studio and hooked up to a CL-1 Cloudlifter, and it serves as a great scratch mic for demos, though it's certainly not limited to that humble role!

Don't be fooled by the "57" or the "PGA" in its name. There's a slight family resemblance, but this is more balanced and less colorful than the SM57s that I own (which are reasonably new and well-taken care of). It's not a poor man's 57. It's its own thing, and I can't think of any microphone I own with such a high performance/cost quotient. Not even close.

This should be on any new recordist's shortlist. I've been recording and mixing for almost two decades, and I could have saved myself a lot of time and money by just starting with a pair of these and a decent audio interface.

Great mic! I was using a borrowed SM57 before purchasing this and I actually think this one sounds better, though about half the price.
