Top-notch Field Recorder

From ultra-compact MP3 to ultra-high-definition DSD recording capabilities, the Sony PCM-D100 handheld field recorder provides you with the capability to capture quality audio in any environment. With its rugged aluminum body and no-nonsense control panel, you'll know your Sony PCM-D100 is the real deal before you even power it up. But what really stood out to us at Sweetwater was the PCM-D100's 2.8224MHz DSD recording mode, which captures audio with such phenomenal detail that you really have to hear it to believe it. What's more, the PCM-D100 includes full PCM linear WAV recording at up to 192kHz, and a host of handy functions we're sure you'll appreciate.

Sony PCM-D100 Handheld Field Recorder at a Glance:
  • Killer mics and converters deliver professional recording quality
  • Built smart and tough for serious field recording applications
  • Loaded with essential onboard audio processing options
Killer mics and converters deliver professional recording quality

Truly professional sound quality is always the result of quality components throughout any piece of gear, not just great mics or top-shelf converters. The PCM-D100 is proof that's something Sony clearly understands! On board, you'll find a pair of extremely clear electret condenser microphones which offer you both wide and more focused X-Y stereo recording capabilities. To capture the sound of these microphones, Sony gave the PCM-D100 a set of extremely capable converters, which can record PCM linear audio at up to 192kHz resolution, MP3 format at up to 320kbps, and full-resolution 2.8224MHz DSD, allowing you to capture quality sound in the format the best fits your project.

Built smart and tough for serious field recording applications

When you're out in the field, the last thing you need is a recorder that can hold up to the challenge. Rechargeable internal batteries are a great idea, if you can wait for them to recharge between sessions, but the fact that the PCM-D100 runs on conventional AA batteries speaks to Sony's practical side, making it easy to keep spare batteries on hand. As for storage, you can easily expand the PCM-D100's recording capacity, with SD-XC card media, but for smaller jobs, the 32GB of internal memory will comfortably do the trick. And, of course, none of this would matter if the PCM-D100 weren't built tough enough to handle getting jounced around a bit. Fortunately, Sony built this handheld recorder out of sturdy aluminum, so you can record anywhere with total confidence.

Loaded with essential onboard audio processing options

There are loads of ways to put the Sony PCM-D100 handheld recorder to use, thanks to its handy onboard functions. For starters, it features a dual-path digital limiter, which makes it ideal for recording in loud environments, and an onboard highpass filter lets you cut out wind rumble when you're recording outdoors. If you're planning to use your PCM-D100 as a training and rehearsal tool, then you'll certainly appreciate its A-B repeat function and digital pitch control, which let you isolate passages and retune them to fit your needs. Finally, a high-speed USB port makes passing audio between your PCM-D100 and your Mac or Windows PC a piece of cake.

Sony PCM-D100 Handheld Field Recorder Features:
  • High-resolution field recorder that delivers professional results in a wide range of formats
  • Onboard stereo microphones feature focused X-Y or wide spread configuration
  • Record in linear PCM (192/176.4/96/88.2/48/44.1kHz), DSD (2.8224MHz), or MP3 (320/128 kbps) formats

Meets All My Expectations

I've had my eye on digital audio recorders since the Sony D50 was still a new product. I always balked at their prices and went for the cheaper models like the Olympus 7 and Zoom 2 and was always disappointed. My interest waned for a few years but saw that Sony updated to the D100 and bit the bullet and decided to put a crowbar to my wallet and get it. Great choice! So much better than than anything I'd owned previously, including a couple of hi-res audio players. The recordings are crystal clear and spatially correct. It's a powerful unit with a lot of headroom to get the most of whatever you're recording. I mention the audio players because you can add an SD card and transfer high quality audio to the unit and it will double as an audio player. I love this unit. As expensive as it is, it gives me exactly what I was looking for. No regrets! Thanks, Sweetwater!

Overall a good purchase

I would have rated this unit "5", but it did not come with an AC power adapter. Although the sales info provided by Sweetwater clearly says this, I have found myself frequently replacing the batteries due to high usage at both church and home. As a result, I broke down and bought rechargeable batteries and a charger (I'm still looking for an AC power adapter). The Sony PCMD100 is a nice unit, but is in a price range that should include the adapter - or at least Sony should list it as an OPTIONAL accessory. Come to think of it, this is the first high-end battery powered device I can ever recall buying that did NOT have an AC power adapter. Cheap on Sony's part, and an inconvenience on mine. Otherwise a great unit. Just FYI: I recorded some really high end music from my stereo using the built in mics (not hardwired) and then listened to the music on Bose Headphones, and it sounded GREAT! Now if I just had an AC power adapter...
