    Fender American Deluxe Precision

I love my new Fender Precision. The "American Deluxe" models are first class all the way. A special shout out to my sales engineer, Mike Conyers. Cheers!

    Why Go Vintage?

I bought the Black version of this bass, after having tried a black Signature model. The Signature model was fine, but this bass is simply incredible! For a modern bass, it has a lot of what I'd look for, even in an old heavy-weight vintage P-Bass--and way less expensive! The amazing vibe it has doesn't stop with the frankly, scary-sounding passive mode (can sound like a P51 Mustang prop!), but take that frighteningly aggressive and woody-sounding tone to a tube amp and you're going to get a face-full of power and blistering warmth, especially if your amp has a presence knob. Or, just crank it up through a SansAMP Bass DI!

It's won me over to the point i haven't been able to go a day NOT playing it! Now, ADD ACTIVE! In active mode, the bass takes on a whole new being. It's truly powerful and lush. It's probably more for clean, bellowing playing styles, but when the standard passive mode isn't cutting it, you can certainly overpower some stacks with the Active mode and still maintain a truly musical tone!

Switching between passive and active modes AND unplugging the bass is quiet, unlike the older Active-only models prone to a loud pop.

I do wish Fender offered a few different customizations. Along with my bass, I've ordered all black hardware from various manufacturers (some taking months to deliver) and painted the skunk stripe on the pickguard black. At the time of this writing, I'm still awaiting the tuning machines, direct from Schaller. I just wish Fender would offer hardware options like this, or offer a "black-out" model, like mine will be. This one seems a bit too Americana or country for my tastes.

Now, the electronics. Wiring in this bass is cheap. Quite frankly, it appears more like a DIY garage job than a real professional wiring installation. Even the PCB assembly for the pre-amp is just hanging loose inside the bass. Swapping out the DPDT toggle switch to a black one was a real pain. Not an American quality job, IMO. But, the electronics are working very nicely.

The N3 Noiseless J pickup is quiet, but not next to a computer in some cases. In fact, it can pick up some pretty nasty noises. Stay away from PCs by about 6 feet.

Fit and finish are really well done. The bass was very balanced and playable from day 1. No neck-diving, and it's lighter than its vintage ancestors, for sure. But still, gobs of tone!

Nice feature is the ability to change the battery out with a dime from your pocket, or a pick, if the screws aren't too tight.

If you're serious about gigging with a P-Bass, this is a winner in my book. Better than the really expensive luthier basses and quite possibly better than many vintage Fenders.

    A genuine Fender....

Very impressed with the Deluxe series. American made, with Custom shop detail. Beautiful finish, coutoured body, and advanced pickups and tone control. Just as advertised. For a modest increse in price, the value added is dramatic.
