Look out Ludwig!! Tama is knockin on your door!!

I recently purchased the Tama Starphonic Aluminum snare from sweetwater and let me tell you that I was blown away on how good this bad boy sounds. The drum sounds like an Ludwig Acrolite on steriods! It has that dry almost wooden quality to it, plus it has a tuning range that is quite impressive. Tuned low it has a beautiful "smack" and only when you start to crank this baby up does she start to show you how versatile and deadly it really is. When you get up in the higher tuning ranges the drum just becomes a beast...very pleasing overtones complimented with that "crack from heaven". I found you can go lower and higher as far as tuning range than your standard Ludwig supraphonic or Acrolite. The hoops on this baby are just perfect...great rim-shots...awesome cross-stick...and most of all changing you heads are now a breeze due to the claw hooks. The linear throw-off is another up-grade from the Ludwig p85. Dual snare adjustments...ratcheted adjustment knobs. I have owned both of the Ludwig snares I had mentioned and i never dreamed anyone could out do the original but now have shown otherwise. Bottom line if your considering a Ludwig Acrolite or Superphonic please give this baby some consideration first. Well done Tama...well done!!

An Excellent Aluminum Snare

Over the past 30 years I've played 8"x14" maple, a 5"x14" birch, a 6.5"x14" brass and a 4"x15" brass snares. The difference between brass and wood is enormous. There are no high frequency harmonics with wood snares. They tend to be warm & dry. Brass brings a brightness to the snare.Aluminum has a brightness with minimal overtones. Its sound sits perfectly in between wood & brass. It brings articulation of a metal snare with the warmth/fatness/punch of a wood snare. This Tama snare has wonderful features for a snare: a seamless shell, notched tension adjustment knobs, bottom hoop with a gap for the snare bed for quick head replacement and/or tuning, hinged tension rods.If you're in the market for a new snare and have never considered an aluminum shell, do yourself a favor and check out this drum!
