The Stage Piano — Reimagined

Are you a keyboardist who wants it all? We're talking about the Numa Compact 2x from Studiologic. The Numa boasts 88 pressure-sensitive semi-weighted keys, aftertouch, 1GB of killer sounds, 128 voices, two studio-grade FX engines, smart MIDI controller functionality, crisp OLED display, and built-in speakers — all in a svelte stage piano that weighs just a tad over 15 pounds. Revel in the tone of the Numa Compact 2x's outstanding sounds — acoustic and electric pianos, guitars, bass, drum kits, organs, synths, orchestral instruments, and more. Use aftertouch and the programmable stick controllers to perform with enhanced expression. And when the gig is over, tuck the elegant Studiologic Numa Compact 2x under your arm and split.

Feels great no matter what you're playing

It's about time someone did a complete re-think of the stage piano — a workhorse instrument keyboardists rely on to deploy production-ready sounds, interface with DAWs in the studio, and hopefully provide a modicum of portability for nightly onstage use. A full-size 88-note keybed is the gold standard for note accessibility, but not everyone needs fully weighted action. If you work extensively with orchestral sample collections or play a lot of synth parts, you'll appreciate a keyboard with semi-weighted action that works well for piano parts, but also provides optimal playability for virtually every other type of instrument. That's the Numa Compact 2x. Studiologic nailed it. It feels great no matter what you're playing.

Sound quality and MIDI controller functionality

The Numa Compact 2x's 88 onboard sounds and dual digital effects engines deliver outstanding sound quality, whether you're listening straight into the board via the TRS headphone jack or through the Class D-amplified speakers. The built-in speakers let the Numa Compact 2x double as a home digital piano and are perfect for hotel room jams and practice while on the road. Factor in the trim, lightweight — yet roadworthy — chassis, and you've got the ultimate stage piano. And what would a modern stage piano be without extensive MIDI control capabilities? With two programmable zones, the Numa Compact 2x lets you easily split and layer sounds. Give Studiologic's innovative, ergonomic metal stick controllers a workout, and you'll agree with the keyboard mavens here at Sweetwater that they're not just a novel replacement for the erstwhile pitch bend and mod wheels; they actually open up new avenues of performance expression. Throw in aftertouch and an expression pedal input, and you've got an instrument designed to faithfully communicate your finest shadings of musical intent.

Liked The Price and the low weight

I bought this keyboard last year and have been enjoying it at home for practice / learning new songs. I must say that for gigging this s NOT the one for me.

I have just taken delivery on my third Roland, a VR-730, and it is much better suited for playing out. I've been playing with the same band for the past 9-years, and all of the members agree that the Roland VR-730 has much better sound and key bed, especially where the Organs are concerned. Yamaha makes a better sounding piano, but this Roland has far better pianos than the StudioLogic.

They keys on the Numocompact X2 are not regulation sized, but are a tiny bit thinner. I was told when I bought it that I'd get used to this, but as I use more than one keyboard at once these smaller keys can be a real pain. When my fingers start losing there mark, I have a real problem. I see where most reviews for the StudioLogic are totally positive and I would agree, if we're talking about an expensive toy for the home.

Being a disabled Veteran with little cash flow, I've never had enough for a Nord, - King of the Keyboards. I get by just fine with the Rolands and their lower cost. This is ONLY my opinion, and others may find the StudioLogic the best thing since sliced bread.

4 1/2 Stars, Rounded-up

Keeping it simple:

-Keybed: white keys are noticeably shorter than those on any other piece of gear I own, to which it's taken a minute for my left hand to adapt. That said, I find the feel fantastic. In my opinion, the action is a superb balance between weighted (not to be confused with hammer-action) and velocity-sensitive keybeds, and is reminiscent to a few of the semi-weighted Roland stage pianos of the 80's and early 90's. That is, there's definitely some resistance but not so much to inhibit articulating organ phrases, etc. And, as a big plus, it's not noisy nor does it feel cheap.

-Onboard bells 'n whistles: so far, I can't really comment beyond the opinion that the piano sounds are lackluster. Granted, it may be that they are meant to be "dry," thus allowing the user to customize the reverb/effects (in which case, would be a good thing). Then, again, I didn't buy it for the extras. For my purpose, it'll do just dandy.

-User manual (primary rationale for 4 1/2 stars): yeah...I really, really do hate relying on Google for anything, but YouTube, it is!
(I think there is just too much under the hood to justly address in any language).

I had originally bought [and promptly RMA'd] the Novation variant on account of it being very very BAD (for any reason under the sun that would make a controller bad).

Despite costing a big more, I'm well pleased with the substitution. I think most everyone will be pleased, overall, if they buy one of these.

Thank you

The Ultimate Midi Split Controller

Perfect weight, height and depth. It's the ultimate second-tier keyboard in a stack of 3+. Its shallow depth makes it easy to read the display with an upper keyboard above it. It's lightweight enough so as to not cause a strain on the keyboard stand or whatever flat-top keyboard you set it on top of. Now. A normal key is about six inches long. These Numa keys are 5 and a half inches. Doesn't not seem like much but if you plan to play with ten fingers and you're used to normal-size keys, the tips of your fingers will run out of space often. Where this keyboard shines is as a midi controller. 2 zones, each with programmable channel, octave (thank you! very important) and aftertouch on/off for each zone. Split the keyboard down the middle and use it control your monophonic bass synth and your monophonic lead synth. This way you don't have to worry about the shorter keys and playing chords because you're only pressing down a few keys at a time. The key action feels like synth-action anyway. I used to think "semi-weighted" and "synth action" were different and maybe they are still meant to be thought of as different. But this Numa action lends itself to synths through and through. Set this baby on top of a Grand or '70s or hang off the sides of the Seven, and you've got maximum control, maximum number of keys (no dealing with multiple 3 or 4-octave controllers and the extra cables that requires), and maximum fun. The Compact 2x talks to my computer very well, even if the editor is a bit clumsy. The I/O connection ports feel cheap and wobbly, so be gentle when plugging in your midi and audio cables. I've searched high and low for a light keyboard to take over my synth duties. Piano and organs I've got covered. Turns out my synth solution was right under my nose for years. It's the Numa Compact 2x! I can't begin to describe how much fun I've been having. The built-in sounds aren't very good and the organ is weak compared to the sound I'm used to, but as a controller this thing is the bees knees. This is the top of the crop. I love my triple keyboard rig again. Best purchase I made in years and I was so dismissive of it before!

AWESOME!!!!!

This is one of the best performance boards out there. If you like a light touch for playing piano, this is your guy. I downloaded the Japan and German grand pianos- Awesome! The board is super fast for adding layers on the spot. The synth engine is fantasic! I love everything except the Leslie sim. That needs some work. How ever playing it thru a Boss RT-20 pedal solves that issue. I use this for my main keyboard along with 2 Korg Krome ex boards. What a light weight KILLER RIG!

Rotary Tip: Headphones or RIGHT CHANNEL only

All in all, this is a great keyboard. It's extremely lightweight and easy to backpack with the custom carrying case. The action is on the lighter side and not piano-realistic, but it's nice to have that light touch for organ and synth sounds.

Speaking of the organ, a lot of people say the Leslie/rotary simulation is bad, and under the circumstances many people are using it under, it is indeed awful especially on the fast setting (i.e. mod Stick 2 to the right): super fast and kind of jarring. However, try listening to it with headphones, or sending only the right channel output to your speaker and you will hear a beautiful rotary sound. For whatever reason, the rotary sounds awful coming out of the left channel, but just try this out. I was going crazy with how bad the rotary sound was and considering buying a third-party Leslie sim pedal, but after figuring this out I have absolutely no need to.
