Nord Lead 4 Synthesizer Keyboard at a Glance:
  • Loaded with four innovative synthesizer voices
  • Full of fun filters and freaky effects
  • Programmable Variation buttons let you instantly warp your sound
Loaded with four innovative synthesizer voices

Nord positively packed their Lead 4 synthesizer keyboard with a synth-geek's playground of sound-creation tools, and it all starts off with the sound engines. Onboard, you'll find a multi-timbral platform sporting a 2-oscillator virtual subtractive analog synth that features 2x oversampling for incredibly smooth sounds. There's also a wavetable mode that showcases Nord's groundbreaking Formant Wavetable. And when you add to that the Lead 4's FM synthesis, Hard/Soft sync options, and True Voice Unison (which can give you up to four oscillators per voice), you're ready to create anything from beefy leads and luscious pads to organic sounds you've never even dreamed of.

Full of fun filters and freaky effects

What's a synth without killer filters and effects? Certainly not a Nord! Nord absolutely loaded the Lead 4 with fun and creative tone-shaping options. First off, you've got a super-flexible filter section that lets you choose from 12dB and 24dB lowpass modes, highpass mode, and bandpass mode, as well as two awesome simulations of transistor and diode ladder filter, hooking you up with all of the gritty, dirty, beautifully flawed sound of classic analog technology. There's even dedicated filter overdrive you can use to rough up your sound before the effects section. Speaking of which, all four voices have their own dedicated effects sections, with delay, reverb, bit crushing, and even a freakishly cool Talk effect.

Programmable Variation buttons let you instantly warp your sound

If you've ever wanted to totally tweak your sounds on the fly, but didn't have enough fingers to do the trick, then you're going to have a blast with the Nord Lead 4's Variation buttons. These buttons let you instantly override nearly any and every parameter on the Lead 4 at once. For instance, you can set up a Variation button to push your LFO speed, crank the modulation setting, and kick up the filter saturation all at once - a perfect recipe for a wicked dubstep drop. Or your can bounce from one Formant wave to another while spiking the bandpass filter and adding delay to create a killer Goa effect. With seven assignable variations per program and clock synchronization, the possibilities are simply endless.

Impressive Analog Modeling

I tweak this synth to the limits and every day I play again I found some new features and possibilities to create original sounds, without doubt it's in many ways better than some fully analog of expensive synths. Not a "plastic" sound or construction like other well known brands Roland Korg etc... this is a synth to keep all your life for sure it's going to make history.

Excellent, excellent NORD LEAD 4!

With all the features it has to offer, I am blown away. I especially like the chord memory function. Although you can't use the reverb and delay simultaneously, I just add those effects via effects pedal or on the Pro Tools track, no big deal. I love having subtractive synthesis capability and FM at my disposal. From Oscillator 2, you can choose from a variety of wavetables, much like the revered Waldorf PPG. Having 7 different morph combinations is great to so that you can customize changing parameters instantly on the fly. Having "overdrive" and 2 different "talk" effects (as well as comb filter, etc.) let you create memorable patches. It also includes some great vintage filters (2) a la Moog and Roland. I'm glad I purchased this synthesizer. Thanks to my great salesperson, Ryan Murray, for all his assistance over the years. The Nord Lead 4 gets 5 stars all the say!

Amazing Synth!!!

I wanted to get this keyboard for the longest time, and when it arrived, and got to playing it right away, it went beyond my expectations. I am still discovering new ways to use it, and I feel like the sound creation capabilities of the Lead 4 are unlimited as well as epic.

Worth the wait and money...GET IT!

I have alot of synths ranging from subtractive, analogue, FM, wavetable and analog modeling. This is was more than worth the wait for me to get since it came out! It does all the synthesis I listed minus subtractive and analogue (because it is a digital synth) and makes any sound rediculously PHAT!!. There is a small learning curve but I was able to do some programming on this thing and in about 10 mins I had the sound I wanted and in 5 mins I had a sound I never heard but wanted more than what I was looking for. The impulse morph buttons are pure genius and really shape your sound into new reminds of how a song changes up without changing the chords but changing the sounds halfway. It is really neat and I use it a lot. It has a great selection of wavetables that clearly explained on OSC 1 in order by catagory. The efects are top knotch, the build is solid with wood end caps and red steel casing, the pots are solid and fluid, the filter has NO stepping and you have some different filter types than your average synth. One person said that this thing is way over priced and recommended a Virus Ti Snow. Sure a virus can do all synthesis and has more voices but where is the keyboard and the layout and build quality cannot even compare to Nord. It is much easier to use than a Virus and has it's own unique sound instead of mocking others. I am analogue guy overall but this digital synth is a keeper for a very long time! Nord has become a standard in many studios whereas a Virus is something many dream about...even me.

This synth sounds great, and Sweetwater made my purchase a pleasure. I'm truly happy with the analog vibe that I get from this synth. It sounds like a 80s Juno 106 but with modern flavor infused inside.
