    Sounds good, good functionality, but....

I purchased these for the "mix cube" feature, but use them as my nearfields. They come with a footswitch that allows you to run back and forth between mix cube mode (which is limited and intended to focus on the midrange) and a more hi fi mode that uses crossovers. After emailing Craig at Avantone a few times, I learned that the higher crossover has actually been moved down from 8k to 2.4k. The smaller mix cubes came recommended in "Mixing for the Small Studio" by Mike Senior, but I opted for these for the extra functionality. Functionally, they do what they're supposed to. Craig even sent me a crossover graph that I requested. Unfortunately, Sweetwater doesn't have some of the information that one should look at when purchasing studio monitors - frequency response graphs and waterfall plots showing decay times throughout the spectrum. The issue when buying ported speakers is that they have extended the frequency response lower than what it would have been without the port, but that also creates acoustic issues where your bass frequencies can artificially ring on in time and make accurate mixing difficult at the lower end. It's an issue to be expected with ported speakers so buyer beware. It's difficult to find a "good" set of monitors without going significantly above this price range, though. I've emailed Craig Devin several times asking for graphs of this information, and although he was polite the first few times and said he was working on it, has ceased contact and won't respond to me emails, hence the poor review. That's not the level of support I would expect after purchasing a $1299 set of monitors - especially since monitors are usually tested in anechoic chambers and manufacturers usually have this information available BEFORE they are made available for sale. All in all, they MIGHT be a very good set of monitors for the money, but it's difficult to make a judgment without actually looking at some test data to say one way or the other. I'm not dissatisfied with Sweetwater at all. Avantone could be better.
