IK Multimedia Miroslav Philharmonik Orchestral Software Instrument Reviews

    Great Sounding Instruments!

I needed a midi instrument software solution on my laptop so I could work on scoring soundtracks for our Handel's Messiah Christmas service while away from home (I use a midi out to an external synth module). I don't use VST plugins, or notation programs that use them, so I initially couldn't get the interface to work with my notation program until I used a simple internal midi port utility (loopbe1). After that, WOW! The instruments are superior to my older JV1080 synth module, which I used for many, many projects. The solo instruments are particularly good. I was blown away by the solo Trumpet! Note that I used the ASIO drivers and not the Direct X drivers. The program delivers much better sound that way. The only drawback, on my laptop at least, is that you cannot record while you use the program. I tried to use a USB input with a Alesis Multimix 8, but it wouldn't allow it. So, I used a stand alone multitrack recorder to record the tracks from the headphone jack, and this worked wonderfully. Thoroughly pleased with this package. BTW, it also has player sounds, warm-up sounds, etc, if you wish to add more realism to your scores. A great buy!

Pretty Simple interface and billions of great sounds.

The samples are great. They include presets that make things easier like the combinations for a chamber setting, symphony, and other orchestral settings. Also included is a huge variety of percussion instruments. You can't go wrong for the price to get some music creation goin.

    Great value

Great sounds and you can't beat the price. I find the interface to be a little cumbersome and small but I recommend it for the value.

    Just what the doctor ordered

Really amazed by the quality of sounds considering the price, the more you know about orchestral production the more you will get out of this. It's not as RAM or processor hungry as some of the mammoth ROMplers out there, and that's a great thing. It sits very well in dense mixes with a great sense of realism. This product surpassed it's price that's for sure.

    Pretty good sounds, delivered

I didn't use the interface that comes with it (which would crash ProTools whenever I tried to boot it up anyway), but as a soundset to Sample Tank I think there are some good, useable sounds in there. It has been around for a long time so the sounds may not be 'original' and can sound a bit dated, but it is orchestral sounds after all! They haven't changed much in recent history.

So far I found many of them needed some tweaking but the ST interface is pretty good for that so it's OK. It takes a long time to download for a medium variety of sounds, but again, all in all they sound pretty good. Certainly they work in a mix with other instruments. For making a realistic orchestral piece? I'm not sure yet, for me so far they've mostly made their way into progressive rock mixes where they sit quite nicely.

Ideal For A Comically Dated Sound

I purchased this library as part of the Total Studio Bundle package; it contains some of the most pathetic orchestral emulations available. Imagine the ultra cheesy instrument sounds included on a child’s keyboard and you will be close to the sounds contained herein. In addition, the library is not and will never be 64 bit; an issue which causes irreconcilable computer issues and makes the program impossible to run efficiently on a modern system. IK Multimedia is aware of the program’s issues and has decided to ignore its obligation to generate product updates for its existing customers and instead focus on producing stupid little toys for people who apparently require a tiny keyboard to play through their cell phones. A useless product from a terrible, aloof company; each of the other libraries in Total Studio sounds just as bad, and is subject to the same functional issues. I hereby assign Miroslav Philharmonik, and IK Multimedia, a “0” rating.
