Analog Polysynth with Sophisticated Sound Shaping

When it comes to traditional subtractive analog synthesis with modern sophistication, the Korg minilogue analog polyphonic synthesizer delivers. It starts with a pair of highly shapable VCOs, which you can shape with a switchable 2-/4-pole lowpass filter, and there's plenty of modulation to go around. At the same time, you can store up to 200 settings, and there are 100 killer presets onboard to fuel your creativity. There's also a built-in tape-style delay effect and an OLED oscilloscope display — something we've never seen on a hardware synth. And that's just the beginning. Between the minilogue's Voice Modes and the onboard 16-step sequencer, you'll be amazed by the sounds you can come up with.

Amazing true analog polyphonic sound

It's tempting to look at a synth like the minilogue and assume that there must be a catch. How could an affordable polyphonic synth like this be truly analog? The answer lies with Korg's ingenuity. To make the minilogue, they had to completely redesign their analog synthesis technology, building a new platform component by component from the ground up. Ultimately, the minilogue features 2 VCOs, 1 VCF, 2 EGs, 1 VCA, and 1 LFO, all completely in the analog realm. You also get cross modulation, oscillator sync, and killer effects including a ring modulator, delay, and a highpass filter, plus an oscilloscope that lets you visualize the results. It's a veritable synthesis playground, and you'll never run out of ways to put it all together.

  • Redesigned all-analog synthesis signal path
  • Includes 2 VCOs, 1 VCF, 2 EGs, 1 VCA, and 1 LFO
  • Cross modulation and oscillator sync onboard
  • Oscilloscope lets you monitor your waveform
  • Additional effects include delay and ring modulation

Shape your tone with filtering, modulation, and delay

Before you dive into its Voice Modes or sequencing capabilities, you'll already be impressed by the minilogue's sound-shaping capabilities. For starters, both VCOs include a Shape control, which allows you to dial harmonic content into the three selectable waveforms. Cross modulation, oscillator sync, and ring modulation settings provide further sound-shaping possibilities as well. A sophisticated lowpass VCF section offers 2-pole and 4-pole modes and more than enough resonance, while an envelope generator and an LFO add time-based dynamics to a wide range of parameters. Finally, there's a tape-style delay onboard, which lets you pull off many classic wet and saturated synth sounds.

  • Dual VCOs include multi-wave harmonic shape control
  • Cross modulation, oscillator sync, and ring modulation onboard
  • 2-/4-pole lowpass VCF offers plenty of resonance for aggressive sounds
  • Modulate parameters with the LFO and envelope generator
  • Tape-style digital delay delivers classic dense and atmospheric tones

Eight unique Voice modes to inspire your creativity

The fact that the Korg minilogue features four voices is pretty cool to begin with, but what makes this compact analog polysynth so much fun is the way it lets you put those voices to use. Choose from eight distinct voice modes to create fun and unique effects that will thrill even the most seasoned synth pro. Here are the details:

  • Poly mode is a basic polyphonic arrangement that allows you to play up to four separate notes at a time. This mode is perfect for playing chords or melodies with overlapping notes. To put it mildly, it's not every day you find a high-quality, true analog polyphonic synth at this price, and Poly mode shows off exactly how cool the minilogue can be.
  • Duo mode is, in many ways, the midway point between Poly mode and Unison mode, offering the best of each. The trade-off is that it cuts your polyphony down to two voices, but they each include 2-part unisons. The result is deep and vibrant sounds with enough polyphony for playing legato or layering notes.
  • Unison mode is a monophonic configuration that uses all four oscillators. This mode lets you create even bigger and richer sounds than Duo mode. It's perfect for creating massive stacks or lush pads. With plenty of options to dial it in, you'll be amazed by the extensive sound-sculpting options you get from this mode.
  • Mono mode is a traditional monophonic setup. What's great about Mono mode is that it trades the unison voices for a fat sub oscillator. It's perfect for beefing up bass patches or adding girth to leads.
  • Chord mode lets you automatically trigger entire chords with the press of a single key. You can quickly set up the chords you want to play for easy recall. There are limitless possibilities for Chord mode live, and it's a killer songwriting feature.
  • Delay mode is one of the most original things about the minilogue. This mode splits the oscillators out into repeating voices, kind of like a standard delay effect, only with the potential to program vastly different sounds for each repetition. Pro tip from the synth gurus at Sweetwater: if you want to experience some truly awesome rhythms, try running your Delay mode patches through the onboard delay effect.
  • Arp mode lets you create short arpeggiator sequences using all four voices. Choose from a variety of fun and exciting arpeggiation modes for cool rhythmical effects. You won't get this kind of character from a typical synthesizer.
  • Sidechain mode is another impressively unique performance option the minilogue offers. It's another multivoice mode, only this time, each new note drops the volume of the previous one, allowing the new note to take the foreground. Sidechain mode is particularly cool if you want to use patches with a softer attack for lead or solo parts since it adds a ton of clarity to the mix.

Add motion to your sound with 16 steps of sequencing

The additional step sequencer is a feature that makes the minilogue one of the most fun keyboards Sweetwater synth nuts have gotten their hands on. For one thing, there's virtually no learning curve, so you can dive right in and start creating cool rhythms and patterns from day one. There are two ways to use the sequencer: you can record in real time, or you can program your performance via steps. Real-time recording lets you overdub, allowing you to automate many parameters to create intensely complex patterns. Step recording is perfect for creating phrases and rhythms. What's more, you can easily combine this onboard sequencer with other MIDI and sync-equipped gear such as Volca series modules.

  • Simple, easy-to-use step sequencing onboard
  • Record your performances in real time in multiple layers
  • Traditional step programming available as well
  • Automate many parameters for complex pattern creation
  • Plays well with MIDI and sync-equipped gear (e.g., Volca modules)

A terrific product in form, function, and cost.

Initial disclosure: Although I'm a loyal Sweetwater customer I did not buy this synth from Sweetwater, and instead bought a gently used one from a friend for a steal. Regardless it's worth sharing my experience to help others make an informed purchase.

This synth is phenomenal! As others have noted the construction is robust, there's next to no menu diving, the parameters for shaping your sound are all right in front of you, and oh yeah the thing sounds fantastic to boot. I've had my eye on this thing for years after another friend bought it years ago for an event, and it's only recently that I've gotten the money together to join in on the fun. Hook it up to some modular gear with the CV outs and you can really craft some wild sounds!

Maybe THE Most Efficient Introduction to Analog Synthesis

The Korg Minilogue is a SUPER fun & intuitive analog synth for everyone from beginners to seasoned synthesits. I've been programming synths for 20 years and this was just as fun as the first synth I ever used. Its analog sound is wonderful and thick. Almost everything has a knob or switch for control and, for the patches I was making, I never went into the menus for further editing beyond naming patches and setting sequencer settings. The shape control of the oscillators gives a lot of variation to your standard waveforms and the sync/ring-mod, cross modulation, & pitch envelope of oscillator two really open up the sonic possibilities. I very much enjoy the dedicated switch for velocity modulation of the filter cutoff and I like that there are only two modulation depths beyond none. My favorite feature of the Minilogue is the envelope modulation of either the rate or the intensity of the LFO. This really gives a sense of motion to what is already a sense of motion from the LFO. My only complaint is that the LFO doesn't go fast enough for analog-FM style tones. It's not nearly as fast as the LFO on the Monologue but that's more of an observation that a full drawback. I really enjoyed the different voice modes of this synth, really finding mono, which introduces a variable level sub, and chord, which creates various fixed chords, to be the most useful beyond the standard poly mode. This is by far the best poly synth I have ever found for someone who is interested in learning analog synthesis. The knobs and switches along with the actual layout of them makes programming make sense and a joy to use. The Minilogue does have mini-keys but the mini keys Korg has been using for their new synths are really great. Much better than the microKORG. With the Minilogue, Korg really show us that there will always be room for one more analog synth.

Good Stuff!

Been playing with this for awhile- my first synth since an old Moog Rogue back in 1983. Took a lot of climbing to get up that hill, but loved every minute and every sound! Korg was generous with the presets, and you can do a lot that way, but it also shines when you modify/personalize. I don't actually use the oscilloscope but I do enjoy watching the waveforms, so worth it! I use it with the Boss SY-1 and get even more sounds with both! Enjoying the retirement thing despite arthritis slowing my guitar playing (which was never great anyway tbh). Polyphony means chords are possible here. Not as intimidating as it looks overall. Happy camper!

One word…fun.

As a seventy year amateur and jack-of-few-trades and certainly master-of-none musician with tech and gadget curiosity in my bones and unsure of why I wanted a synth in the first place, after hours of research and months of pondering, I hit submit on my Minilogue order. Great decision for me but please note this five star review is only intended to help an entry level wanderer like me. Please read that last line again. Still here? So, the Mini makes it easier to explore and experiment with sound than I thought it would be. And for just goofing around, playing around with the presets is so much fun I can get lost for hours. I can't explain why it is more fun than playing with the presets on my Korg Kross…just is. The narrow keys are not an issue for me, because I have a piano and the 88 key Korg so I didn't get the Minilogue for the feel of playing an authentic size keyboard. As an entry level user, my decision to get the original instead of the Xd was based on bits and pieces gleaned from reviews and a sophomoric approach to whether I cared about the digital option offered with the xd. Now I just look forward to more aimlessly fun play time in between discovering all the features of my Mini and introducing it to the other robots in my little music room!

Still a great synth

I was surprised when I first touched this synth, it has an amazing build quality, solid as a rock. Impressive aluminum front panel gives this the feel of the highest quality synth. I chose this synth over the XD version because I wanted the full ADSR filter and the unique LFO link to the ADSR, very versatile. The sound is good and the oscillator shaping parameters give this synth plenty of character. The only downside to the overall sound is the amp envelope is not very long, the shorter time was disappointing, but with some delay and reverb, it can still be used in ambient territory. Modulation is fantastic with the sequencer aiding in 4 lanes of modulation from motion control. The motion control can be used just for the patch or in the sequence or both. Another incredible surprise is the BPM of the sequencer, it can be slowed so much I can use the sequencer for 16 measure chord progressions. This synth has a VERY long portamento, where it can take a minute to sweep the lowest and highest key (3 octaves). I bought this 5 years after its release, it is not just a beginners synth, any sound designer can make this synth sing, don't let the low price fool you, Korg has a real classic we will be talking about 30 years from now.

While 4 voices for a keyboard master is not enough, I think of this as an extended monophonic synth with some poly capabilities. Korg has taken the 4 voices to the absolute limit with: 1) mono with sub oscillator for a 3 oscillator patch. 2) stacked voices/unison. 3) normal poly. 4) chords, and other innovative voicings. The main advantage I wanted the 4 voices for is slow ambient solo-ing; there is no way to have long releases and blend and overlap notes on a monophonic synth, the Minilogue can do this and be switched to true monophonic play as well. Makes me wonder why anyone would purchase the Monologue?

I never recommend this as a first keyboard, first synth yes. A beginner keyboardist needs full sized keys to begin their career on. I don't play mini keys, but I love mini keys on a synth for sound design programming, very convenient and today don't consider modules any more. Rather have the mini keys for programming and then MIDI cable in for performance from my full sized key keyboards. For a beginner they could always buy a full sized controller to go with this synth as an option.

Other important reasons for purchasing this synth are the MIDI controls in the menu, this synth allow me to turn off "PROGRAM CHANGE" For a studio with many synths this is extremely important and left out of many other synths. MIDI 5pin DIN is a must and the Minilogue has them. The oscilloscope is fun to watch too in the included display. While this synth has a monaural output and the XD a stereo, I prefer this to simulated stereo on the XD. I will be using another synth with the minilogue to create left/center/right true stereo for some patches, and then adding my own effects. In this respect the Minilogue fits right in to my bigger studio.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Trey Stemen

The Korg Minilogue brings a simple format and signal flow that remove all the menus and distractions from the audio making process. I’ve been synthesizing sound for years and all-analog synths are hard to come by at this price point and great sounding ones are even harder to find. In a short amount of time with the Minilogue, I was able to make the sounds in my brain a reality. It blew me away with its versatility and easy to use design.

Rob Parker

As a long-time synth collector, I was skeptical of the Korg Minilogue - then I got my hands on one. Every turn of a knob or flick of a switch leads to musical and inspiring sounds. I particularly like being able to create in-your-face leads and sculpt textures that fit like a puzzle piece, even in the busiest mix. With years of experience playing and maintaining vintage polysynths, it's a pleasure to find a great-sounding all-analog modern model that's totally reliable and fun to play - especially at this price!
