Boutique Preamp in an Affordable 500 Series Format!

Daking's Mic Pre 500 is a redesigned version of a single channel from their popular Mic Pre IV in a module format for use in 500 Series racks. Like the Mic Pre IV, the Mic Pre 500 uses Class A, fully-discrete transistor circuitry. The Mic Pre 500 uses a tri-color LED metering setup and accepts both line and hi-Z inputs via the 1/4" jack, in addition to the XLR microphone equipped with +48V phantom power. With a -20dB pad for added versatility, the Mic Pre 500 microphone preamplifier is ready for anything.

Daking Mic Pre 500 Modular Single-Channel Microphone Preamplifier at a Glance:
  • Modular Design to integrate into 500 Series racks
  • Class A fully-discrete transistor circuitry
  • Fully-loaded front panel controls and metering

Modular Design to integrate into 500 Series racks
The same preamplifier that made the Mic Pre IV in an affordable, modular format. The Mic Pre 500 fits any standard 500 Series rack unit. Now you can pair one of these awesome sounding microphone preamplifiers with a wide assortment of killer audio components and get exactly what you want from your signal chain.

Class A, fully-discrete transistor circuitry
The Mic Pre 500 offers the same professional-quality Class A, fully-discrete transformer circuitry as found in the Mic Pre IV and Mic Pre One. It sounds amazing — the way you'd expect only boutique gear to sound — and since it's modular, you can always expand and add other modules to your sound chain to get the results you're looking for.

Fully-loaded front panel controls and metering
By borrowing the layout design from the Mic Pre IV, Daking ensured that everything you need is right there on the front panel. The instrument/line input is mounted on the front panel for easy access, and the buttons - input selector, phase (polarity) switch, pad, and phantom power on/off - are laid out in a logical manner. An adjustable highpass filter (10-200Hz) lets you trim low frequencies and get rid of unneeded and unwanted low frequencies like air conditioning rumble or floor vibrations as you record, while an eight-segment, tri-color LED meter helps you maintain optimal levels.

Daking Mic Pre 500 Modular Single-Channel Microphone Preamplifier Features:
  • Class A fully-discrete transistor circuitry
  • +48V phantom power
  • -20dB pad
  • Highpass filter, variable from 10Hz to 200Hz
  • Eight-segment, tri-color meter
  • Formatted for use with any 500 Series rack

Daking MicPre

Brings out the best from your mics. Has it's own vibe compared to API and Neve. Super clean and highly tranparent. Professional results at a fair price.

Boutique Utility

I've been using Daking pres for a while now. I own a pair and I'm planning on purchasing a few more. I went with Daking because of all the great reviews about how great they sound on drums. And they really do! But what really got me was that they sound great on just about anything that I run through them. I've used the API 512c, Rupert Neve 511 and a few other random pres. I wouldn't say that the Daking is better or worse than the others. It is just different. That said, I would track an entire record with these pres. Between the amount of gain available and the -20 pad, you can really push all sorts of sounds and tones through this pre. For the price, go ahead and grab a pair of these. You won't be disappointed.

The Workhorse

Just tracked an entire album through this pre, and the unit really seems to inhabit a perfect sweet spot between, cleanliness, body, hype, and character. At $499, anyone diving into their first 500 series rack should snag one or two of these. You can't go wrong with this, it punches well above it's price range.

This is a classic mic pre. It really shines on acoustic guitar and drums, and it has more gain than you will ever need!

Sweetwater Advice

Thomas Leahy

The unique character of the Daking MicPre 500 makes it one of my favorite dark preamps. I often use my pair on drums because of the way it brings out low end while almost compressing top-end attack. It adds punch to toms and kick, and when I use it on the bottom side of snare drums I get fat lower mids and tight attack.
