As a bass player with years of experience, I've spent a lot of time looking for an affordable setup I can use live and in the studio. I tried countless preamp pedals, looking for one that could really cut through the mix, and the Darkglass Microtubes B7K is it. Its EQ is powerful in all the right frequencies, so I can really dial in my tone. Also, the drive is full and clear, with none of the usual mush, and I particularly like the Attack and Grunt switches, which deliver additional layers of texture and tone shaping.
Best Preamp DI I've heard
I first heard about this when watching Nolly's gear rundown a few years ago and wanted to get one for my bass, just to see if I could get the same results as him as far as his bass tone. Despite the fact that I don't have a compressor or a high gain guitar amp, this DI in of itself has by far the clearest sound that I've ever heard. I also own a Sans Amp para driver v2 and, while it sounds great, the cab simulation on it sounds compressed and a little bit unnatural. The Darkglass makes up for it by adding onto the signal, rather than changing it all together with a cab simulation and leaves you with an extremely crisp, clear sounding tone, even with all of the EQ settings at 12 o'clock. By far the best addition to my board
Best Preamp and Drive!
I've tried countless preamp and drive pedals for bass and have yet to find anything that comes close to the B7K. Even running with no drive and using the B7K to shape tone is incredible. I recommend this to any bassist for their arsenal. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
