Mackie's Latest Assault On the State of the Monitoring Art

Mackie MR5mk3 Powered Studio Monitors will help you make better-sounding music. In the '90s, Mackie rewrote the book on nearfield studio monitoring, and they've been tweaking ever since to give you even more affordable and accurate monitors. The MR5mk3 is Mackie's latest assault on the state of the art, with innovations like an enhanced waveguide for a wider sweet spot, custom-tuned rear porting for smooth, extended bass response, and customizable frequency controls to let you dial in the perfect response for your space. Need great monitors without breaking the bank? Check out Mackie's MR5mk3.

Mackie MR5mk3 Powered Studio Monitors at a Glance:
  • Enhanced waveguide system delivers incredible openness and clarity
  • Perfectly matched drivers and amplifiers for optimized performance
  • Customizable frequency control for your studio space
Enhanced waveguide system delivers incredible openness and clarity

Mackie's MR5mk3 Powered Studio Monitors sport an enhanced waveguide system that minimizes diffraction and reflections, giving you a wider sweet spot. You also get a seamless transition from low to high frequencies, resulting in rock-solid stereo imaging. And Mackie has voiced the MR5mk3 for job one: music. This may seem like a "duh," until you consider that many monitors have "jack-of-all-trades" voicing that must accommodate dialog and sound effects work in post production facilities, as well as the work typically done in modern music studios.

Perfectly matched drivers and amplifiers for optimized performance

Packing 50 watts of Class AB amplification that's ideally matched to the 5.25" polypropylene woofer and 1" silk-dome tweeter, Mackie MR5mk3 monitors deliver high output with controlled low-frequency performance. They're also optimized for excellent transient response, so they reproduce snare drums and other quick-transient sources with fidelity.

Customizable frequency control for your studio space

Mackie MRmk3 Series monitors give you two levels of bass boost, plus a boost/cut for your highs. With these two controls, you can fine tune your frequency response to your room and speaker placement - handy to have, considering very few of us work in acoustically perfect rooms. And speaking of useful features, you also get flexible input connectivity with balanced XLR and TRS connectors, plus an RCA - letting you integrate your monitors into a variety of studio setups.

Mackie MR5mk3 Powered Studio Monitors Features:
  • Music-centric voicing ideal for modern mixing, monitoring, and multimedia applications
  • Enhanced waveguide system delivers unmatched clarity and openness
  • 50 watts of Class AB amplification
  • 5.25" polypropylene woofer, 1" silk-dome tweeter
  • Perfectly matched amps and drivers for optimized performance

  • Customizable frequency control for your studio space

Crystal Clear

For a $300 a pair you can't beat these. The JBLs are just as good, but these look cooler. Amazing sound, you can really hear it in the high end (cymbals etc)

Amazing Imaging, Nice Look

After checking the KRK Rokit 5 Gen 3s, which I actually expected to buy, I ended up settling on these instead. Both are good sounding speakers for the money, but I found the KRKs to be a little bit boxy and directional in comparison. Both feel like they accurately represent the source within a dB or so, but when you move around the stereo field, the Mackie’s clearly win on imaging. Also, while bass is about what you’d expect it to be with monitors of this size, the midrange and HF clarity of the MRmk3s edges out the competition just enough, and the combination of their imaging and clarity results in a monitor that is simply more pleasing to work with, in addition to being accurate. The look is clean, simple and “industrial,” and a clear step up from the previous generations of MRs, especially with the nice backlit Mackie logo. So in the end I guess I’m also happy to have a little less yellow in my studio… and to own a monitor that sounds as good as it looks.

Respectable Monitor

Considering the price, these mini beasts have impressive sound. Originally I intended to get the Yamaha HS5's, but they sounded so fizzy at the top end that it really turned me off. These Mackie's in contrast are very smooth and have a nice warm, bass response. I actually feel like I'm missing a little high end and have the 5K boost enabled but I'm not sure it's helping--these things need like a 10K boost (again insanely smooth response). Overall I've made many good mix decisions based on these monitors and will continue to for as long as they hold out. Oh and for maximum performance get these things on Auralex MoPads. It easily doubles their performance.

Get 5s not 4s!!

I bought some 4" monitors for my home studio for their size and price and was really disappointed with how they sounded for mixing drums in particular.. So I stepped up and got these 5's and it made all the difference in the world. The low end reference was so much better. Worth every penny!!
