Hear What You See

Sennheiser designed the MKE 440 for camera-mount stereo audio capture without compromise. Arranged in a V pattern, the 440's two matched and aligned mini shotgun mics are extremely effective at capturing an accurate stereo image with naturally balanced ambience and superior dialog intelligibility. The mic's robust stainless steel micro mesh exterior safeguards the mics and provides wind noise suppression. If you shoot video with a DSLR, you'll want a compact shoe-mount mic; if you use a video camera, the MKE 440 will capture vastly superior audio. In either case, the Sennheiser MKE 440 will prove to be a sound investment.

Capturing a superior stereo sound field

Sennheiser makes the professional shotgun mics used by top Hollywood production sound mixers to capture location audio and dialog for blockbuster movies and prime-time TV. So when it comes to capturing sound for your own productions, you'll be in good company with the MKE 440 mounted on your camera. Most stereo mics for on-camera use are not shotguns, which is why many videos sound unfocused, distant, and reverberant, with too much distracting ambient noise. Sennheiser's solution is two mini shotguns arranged in a patented V-shaped design, which covers a stereo field corresponding to the width of field of a 35mm lens on a full-frame DSLR. The spread is uniform and focused for superior speech intelligibility while maintaining excellent off-axis sound rejection.

Patented shockmount and windscreen design

At Sweetwater, we're acutely aware that microphones pick up structure-borne noise when being handled — or when the camera they're mounted on is moved. The 440's patented shockmount, with its rubber suspension secured within durable protective metal mesh, is precisely calibrated to the weight and dimensions of the shotgun microphone tube to ensure optimal suppression of handling noise. The stainless-steel micro-mesh also suppresses wind noise more effectively than common foam windscreens with no muffling of high-frequency clarity. It also shields against electromagnetic interference. All of this means you'll capture cleaner, more professional-sounding audio for your video productions.

Superior electronics for superior sound

The MKE 440's integrated battery-powered, high-dynamic-range electronic circuit matches the output of the mic to your camera's input sensitivity for clean capture of everything from a pin drop to a deafening rock concert. Sennheiser included a highpass filter to reduce structure-borne rumble and low-frequency wind noise. Offering more than 100 hours of operation on a pair of AAA batteries, the 440 even performs flawlessly on "lowbatt" operation.

Better than expected
I am paring this with a Lumix G95 for live symphony and choir recordings. I recently recorded a chamber choir with a 9 piece string section plus piano. The audio for this recording was terrific! I wasn't able to get an ideal location as it was in the very far back of the concert hall and was placed off center. I was expecting the audio to be trash but ended up being pleasantly surprised. The Sennheiser shotgun mics were still able to focus enough on the source and eliminate the echo in this large concert hall. You would never believe the camera was 200 ft away from the source. The acoustics weren't ideal in this hall so this is very impressive. I had also recorded audio only using my RME and high-end SDC mics. The Sennheiser combined with the Lumix preamps can produce a professional sound that can be utilized in my post production audio mix with my RME driven audio files.

Sennheiser MKE 440
Purchased the Sennheiser MKE 440 from Sweetwater a couple of weeks ago and had high hopes for this mic - planned on using it on my Panasonic GH5 to record stereo ambiences - but it was defective. It produced loud noise and static on the left channel. I know these things happen but was surprised, when I saw on another companies website, that a number of people had the same complaint. I am returning it and will go a different direction. I also have the Sennheiser MKE 600 & it worked fine on my GH5. If you wish, listen to the short audio sample recorded on the GH5 which showcases the problem.
