Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion Pedal

There's a reason they called it the "Mega Distortion" pedal. . .

Every guitarist we've seen come in contact with the MD-2 has been blown away. Some go so far as to say it's BOSS's best distortion pedal ever. We know that's a bold statement, but just wait until you hear it! It delivers distortion so nasty, gnarly, and just plain vicious that it'll leave permanent psychological scars.

Only Distortion Pedal I've liked

I've had this for nearly 10 years with heavy use and I'm only now buying a backup. So along with the incredible sound, its also very well constructed (at least it was 10 years ago). This is actually the first distortion pedal that I ever played and nothing has ever matched it since. This is: Thick. Punchy. Smooth. Warm. Modern. This is not: Noisy Thin Harsh Sharp

One of the best

This pedal is fantastic. Lots of versatility and warm, heavy distortion. I have tried most of the "usual suspects" and in my opinion this is one of the very best. When you consider the great price point I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better pedal. Highly recommended.

BOSS MD-2 MEGA DISTORTION

I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF RECORDING A DOUBLE ALBUM IN A MAJOR STUDIO, I'VE USED BOSS PEDALS FOR MANY YEARS AND NEVER HAD ONE FAIL. AS A DISTORTION THE METAL CORE WAS TOO BRASH UNTIL I COUPLED IT WITH A BOSS ACTIVE DISTORTION. THEN I NEEDED A TOTALLY DIFFERENT COLOR OF SOUND FOR WHAT I WAS DOING, AND SWAPPED OUT THE METAL CORE & PUT A BOSS MEGA DISTORTION BEFORE THE ADAPTIVE DISTORTION IN MY SIGNAL CHAIN FOLLOWED BY 450 MILLISECONDS OF DELAY & A TOUCH OF CHORUS FROM A LINE 6 FROM SWEETWATER AND I GOT THE TONE I WAS AFTER. YOU ALSO WANT TO PLAY MORE WHEN YOU SOUND GOOD ! I'M BACK IN THE STUDIO IN TWO DAYS AND BOSS WAY HUGE & CRY BABY IS THROUGHOUT MY PEDAL BOARD ALL FROM SWEETWATER.

Mega Distortion is runner up to the Big Muff Pi !

They say it's the DS-1 upgraded to give you that low bass punch so desired by metal players and man does it have a punch it can sound like or really close to the Big Muff Pi if queued right and you can get lots of other great sounds from the MD-2 such as blues by setting the distortion and gain all the way down very cool bluesy sound. The MD-2 is two pedals in one the distortion increases your high end sound for soaring notes in your lead solos and the gain gives you more low in sound that will thicken up your tone for heavy stuff and you can get anything from classic to modern tone by adjusting the tone and bottom controls way cool I love it.This is another great guitar effects pedal by Boss it's a keeper a must have for any serious guitar players arsenal go get you one or two of these awesome MD-2 distortion pedals and see for yourself it will be one of the best things you ever done.I'm shooting for the stars guys!!!!!

One of the best (underappreciated) Boss distortion pedals!

I've tried a lot of BOSS products, and while their stuff is always durable and dependable, a lot of people are critical of their distortion and overdrive pedals. But in most cases, those opinions are formed squarely off of the older BOSS pedals everyone has owned or tried: DS-1, SD-1, MT-2, BD-2, and so on. The Mega Distortion (MD-2) did not come out until Sept. 2001, and was apparently meant to appeal to the drop-tuning, 7-string, and nu metal players that had been popular up to that time. But actually, if you forget that whole angle and just LISTEN to how the pedal sounds, BOSS made a pretty convincing "cabinet-in-a-box" sound that can add some real size and punch to smaller combo amps. I was pretty skeptical when I read some of the other reviews mentioning 70's and 80's Marshall JCM sounds, but those are pretty good descriptions. No, it won't create that exact sound, but it will bring more life out of your rig without getting too muddy sounding. While the controls and EQ are simpler than, say, the Boss Metal Zone, there's some cool interplay between the Dist and Gain Boost knobs. The "Dist" knob adds more traditional Boss distortion, similar to a DS-1, but capable of more saturation and low end fullness. The "Gain Boost", in my opinion, is more like an on-amp overdrive. I actually like some of the settings where the Dist is set low, but the Gain Boost is set high - makes some AC/DC-like classic rock tones. My 5-star rating does not mean that this pedal is "better" than a Wampler or any number of $100+ boutiques. Pedal sound is very subjective, and I encourage you to try out before you buy, whenever possible. But given that the MD-2 can be found at pretty reasonable prices, I would give this modern improvement on the DS-1 some serious thought in your search for a high-gain distortion pedal.
