Super-playable Eurorack Synth Rig

Easily one of the most playable Eurorack synth rigs to hit the market, Pittsburgh Modular's Lifeforms System 201 combines the awe-striking power of their Lifeforms SV-1 Synthesizer Voice Module with the performance flexibility of their Lifeforms KB-1 Keyboard Controller Module. The comprehensive SV-1 synth module includes all of the basic elements you need: oscillators, modulation options, filtering, and essential signal routing tools. You can take full advantage of this fully modular synthesizer with its KB-1 keyboard, which includes pressure-sensitive key zones, arpeggiation, step sequencing, and more. Mounted together in a Structure EP-96 Eurorack enclosure, these modules form an amazingly playable analog synth.

Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms System 201 Eurorack Synthesizer at a Glance:
  • Stack up waveforms with two sweet oscillators
  • Shape your sound with a 3-way filter section
  • Perform with the Lifeforms KB-1 keyboard module
  • Take control with extensive MIDI to CV options
Stack up waveforms with two sweet oscillators

No matter how simple the Lifeforms SV-1's oscillator sections may look, once you start patching them together, you'll be amazed by the sonic range they deliver. Start building your sound from sine, triangle, sawtooth, square, and even Pittsburgh Modular's own blade waveforms. You'll find options for accessing rigging FM, thunderous sub-oscillator rumbles, and everything in between. Noise and sample-and-hold circuits are just a patch point away, and a clock-syncable digital LFO adds even more possibilities to your sound creation.

Shape your sound with a 3-way filter section

You can't have subtractive synthesis without a worthy filter section, and the Lifeforms SV-1 delivers. This big, fat, and vibrant filter includes discrete outputs for highpass, lowpass, and bandpass processing. There's plenty of resonance on tap, with ample headroom for harmonic content across the spectrum. In addition to controlling the base cutoff frequency, this filter section includes a CV adjustment control, which can both attenuate and even invert the modulation signal coming from the LFO, the ADSR envelope, or an external source.

Perform with the Lifeforms KB-1 keyboard module

Despite its appropriately dainty size, the Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms KB-1 Keyboard Controller Module delivers a ton of performance power to your Eurorack rig. For starters, its 1-octave layout includes 13 pressure-sensitive key zones, which provide you with continuously variable expression in mono or duophonic modes. There are also two multimode trigger pads and four preset voltage memory triggers, which allow you to pull off some fancy tricks. On that note, the onboard arpeggiator and step sequencer are a blast to play with while you tweak knobs on your synth. What's more, 11 patch points provide all the programming flexibility you could ask for.

Take control with extensive MIDI to CV options

There's a lot of cool electronic music gear out there that's fun to play with but hard to incorporate into a bigger system. At Sweetwater, we're constantly helping our customers put together complex rigs that span multiple manufacturers, which is why we're so pleased with the Lifeforms SV-1's extensive MIDI implementation. Not only can you play the SV-1 using MIDI (it comes with a special MIDI cable), but basic CV and gate are only the beginning. Dedicated outputs for velocity and CCs allow the SV-1 to react dynamically to your keyboard or sequencer, and onboard glide control is a wonderful bonus.

A Dream

The Pittsburgh Modular System 201 is simply a dream. Do not be fooled by its compactness; there is a lot of synthesis power infused into it. When you consider that there are TWELVE functions built into it that would normally account for twelve separate Euro devices, it is simply amazing. In its compactness you are also assured of Pittsburgh Modular’s esteemed sound quality. The fact that it is normalized is to me a very good design move. This results in being able to initially engage and explore the synthesizer without inserting a single patch cable. The beauty of the design is that as you do start to use patch cables, they simply break those internal normalized points and you are able to get the signal path you are looking for. Not enough praise can be expressed as to how amazing and smooth the filter is, it just needs to be touched and heard. There are also actually TWO oscillators on the system and they provide some FM functionality as well. The included KB-1 capacitive keyboard is a well-engineered device. Though novel in approach, it is very practical in execution. Again, don’t be fooled by its compactness, it is a feature-packed device: octave changes, sequencing, modulating chords, arpeggiation, gate control, definable four knob presets, etc.I am thankful for the conversations I’ve had with Richard Nicol over the years at GearFest. He is knowledgeable and a modular synthesizer lover at heart. After using the System 201 I am very glad to be part of the Pittsburgh Modular family.

Amazing frank

frank gertz makes sure I'm happy every time I do buissness with him.So when I decided to go modular again he made sure I was first in line and everything was fine when it arrived. The best sales person I have ever had the pleasure of doing buissness with ever (I mean that from the bottom of my grumpy old heart)and the Pittsburgh 201 synth blew my mind !it is a really wonderfully huge analog voice that can go totally arp 2600 or mini Moog or totally mad scientist .....in other words it can do it all!AND this modular feels an behaves like an "instrument "with its own sonic character. THANK YOU FRANK GERTZ! And company at sweetwatersound this is my home away from home.
