Amazing LP, Just what I needed
I am primarily using this guitar to play 70's hard, glam and classic rock. KISS, Sweet, TRex, Slade, David Bowie, etc. I play it through a Marshall DSL50 and various practice amps.
Its a really incredible guitar. As I understand it, Gibson's first solid body production guitar in 30 years or so. No weight relief, just solid mahogany. And so light! 8 lbs, 8 ounces.
The finish is incredible. I'm not really one for lots of figuring, and plain tops are fine with me, but that said, who would kick this girl out of bed? She looks amazing.
And the playing and action is unreal. I have owned 6 different LPs and this one is the best, hands down. Plays like butter with great tone and sustain for days. Very slinky on the upper frets and I SWEAR it gets LOUDER as you work your way up the neck. Perfect for searing solo runs.
However, YMMV as part of this guitar's mojo is almost certainly an anomaly. It has THE THINNEST NECK of all the LPs I've owned, and its also thinner than most I've ever played. Mine does NOT have the expected, chunky, 50's style neck that is spec'd with this model. It is as thin as a 60's slimtaper neck, such as the Les Paul Classics. In fact I have guitars that are advertised as having slimtaper necks, whose necks are BIGGER than this one.
No real complaint about this, except that it makes it tough to count on a similar feel coming from another one. I've heard all over how hand crafted these are and that they hand shape the necks and there is a lot of variance... and I'm sure that is all true. But I'm also sure that this neck was thinner than this model is spec'd with to begin with. I can't believe someone sanded off 2/3 of it! That's the only reason I deducted half a star- that fact that its so far from what I expected that I'm not sure another one will be similar.
The pickups are also great. I have the 57 Classics in 2 of my guitars now, and I might just put them in all my Gibsons. They clean up nice, are medium gain, but overdrive in a very musical way any way you push them- OD, Distortion, Fuzz, they love it all. Always very articulate and warm. I certainly haven't tried every pickup out there, but they are certainly my faves.
I plan on playing this guitar for the rest of my life, then leaving it to my daughter. Its a family heirloom type of instrument. Its not just another guitar.
