Gorgeous Resonance and Sharp Snare Crack

The Ludwig Supraphonic is probably one of the most recognized snare drums in history. Of course, the Supraphonic's popularity shouldn't come as a surprise. The bright, crisp attack provided by its chrome-plated, seamless, beaded aluminum shell complements its full, resonant tone and sharp snare crack perfectly. A P85 strainer ensures that the Supraphonic is remarkably dynamic and responsive to your playing. From jazz to metal and beyond, the Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum's classic tone will make your drumming pop like never before.

The Ludwig legacy

Since 1909, Ludwig drums have had one of the proudest legacies in percussion and are a favorite of Sweetwater drummers for their warm, punchy sound. The world has heard them under the sticks of Cream's Ginger Baker, keeping the pulse behind Queen at Live Aid, and laying down the monstrous beat of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks." But their biggest break came when Ringo Starr proudly played them on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, making Ludwig a household name for aspiring and superstar drummers alike.

Very nice...But

This is a great drum no doubt, love the dryness supplied by the aluminum shell. Plus the hammering does add to that effect abit more. But one of my students let me borrow his Pearl Sensitone 14x6 aluminum drum and I was amazed at how similar they are. I would even dare to say in a blind listening test most drummers would be hard pressed to identify which drum they were hearing. For two hundred dollars less than the Ludwig, the Pearl Sensitone would be my choice if I were to repurchase either one of these again. Ludwig has the Legacy and all that, but Pearl puts their drum making skills to an equal level from all the side by side testing I've been doing. I was very surprised.

I was sold on the sound of aluminum since I played a Pearl Tico Torres model some years ago....and this ain't it. To be fair, the Torres model I believe has a shell more than twice the thickness of the Supraphonic, so there's that. Now this drum has been compared in several reviews to the Pearl Sensitone model as being no better but costing much more. What I can tell you is that the Pearl has a MUCH better throw-off: the Ludwig, to me feels cheap, like I'm gonna break it when I tighten the snares (sorry P85). OK...enough bad things about the Supra....I feel like I'll burst into flame if I say anything else (when I was a child, you were a god if you had a set of Lud's).
