Distinct Lakland body design

Lakland's Skyline 55-02 Standard 5-string electric bass guitar features a distinct and recognizable body shape, sporting a comfortable offset-waist design with great balance and feel. The Skyline 55-02 Standard even gives you the same custom-contoured curves, bridge, and pickups as the original US version.

Active pickups and preamp

No matter what style of music you play, the Lakland pickup system will give you every tone you could want. The Skyline 55-02 Standard 5-string electric bass guitar sports the same amazing pickups and preamp found on the (much more expensive) 44-94. These active electronics give your instrument serious punch, plus extra expression across the whole fingerboard. A dual-coil humbucking pickup at the bridge gives you fat, aggressive tones, while the J-style single-coil in the middle position offers mellow, warm tones.

Ash and maple - an ideal bass tonewood combination

Beneath its remarkable duo of active pickups, the Lakland Skyline 55-02 Standard 5-string electric bass guitar bass features the perfect combination of tonewoods, giving you a harmonically rich and hard-hitting sound like no other. What's more, its smoothly contoured ash body makes the Skyline 55-02 Standard one of the most comfortable basses you'll ever pick up, and its solid maple neck adds extra punch and sustain to every note you play.

Lakland 55-02 Standard Skyline Series 5-string Electric Bass Guitar Features:
  • An affordable custom bass with active pickups
  • Same hardware and electronics as the USA-made Lakland bass
  • Solid feel with active-pickup punch
  • Same high-end preamp and electronics featured on the 44-94
  • 9V-powered pre with snap-on cover - no screws!
  • Comfortable for long gigs
  • Perfect for any style of music

Great all around bass! And they back what the sell

Background - I typically bring two basses to every gig; a 4 and 5'er. The low B makes it with some of the old school rock and funk, and mellower ballads by our diva. After playing a number of 5's, my curiosity finally lead me to 35" necks, and specifically to Lakland. With a very few exceptions, everything I found about Lakland and Skyliness was good. So I ponied up and took the plunge. I own this bass. The 55-02 I received is a solid, good looking, well-built instrument. It was impressive out of the box,(although really, not even a cheap gig bag?). The maple neck was clean, straight and true, with a gun oil and wax finish. It is my first rig with pleking and it appears to be the real deal; the bass just feels and plays good. The pre-amp provides all the tone and variations I need, although it’s about mid-level quality in my experience. It's weaker than the MusicMan pre-amp, and stronger than the Fender AS Deluxe J unit. My 55-02 weighs in at 8 lbs. 11 oz., less than my other fives. What really sold this guitar for me, and why I bought it in the first place, is the 35" neck. The additional distance\string tension makes the B playable, nails the D, and I use it all the time instead of an open E. I alos find myself using it a lot on the higher end as well. IMHO, the Lakland is surprisingly easy to play, and I've had none of the difficulty some have mentioned adjusting to the length, nor going back and forth between a 34 and 35. The Lakland 55-02 is a great all around 5 string that I can easily recommend!!Side Note – Additional Props. to Sweetwater and Lakland: A couple of months after the purchase, the pre-amp went out. Sweetwater immediately sent me a pre-paid mailing label, and checked out the bass. Their techs sent the bass on to Lakland, who replaced the pre-amp and direct shipped it back. All this was done quickly, friendly, with progress updates, and absolutely no hassle. How you handle things that come up show your character as a staff and as a company. Sweetwater and Lakland are doing things right.

Lakland 55-02

Overall a very nice instrument. Packing was well done by Sweetwater and on time. Tone is awesome. It will need fret work however. Most have fairly sharp edges and I will be taking it in for some neck work. Wasn't expecting to need that on a Lakland based on other reviews. It is a great sounding bass though! Incredible sustain and no dead frets.
