    good bass, BUT.

Good in all areas, but the thing sucks up batteries like crazy for the eq.

    Retraction from previous review

I did a review on this bass a few months ago and had reported a problem with the volume pot. I'm embarrassed to admit that I had unknowingly engaged a Noise Gate on my practice amp and THAT is what was causing the problem. My apologies to the good people at Sweetwater. This really is a great bass and I hope my report didn't deter anyone from purchasing a Lakland 55-02.

    Here's the thing...

First the good: The ergonomics of this bass are GREAT!!! It balances well and the first position reach is not a problem despite the 35" scale. The neck width is a little wider than I prefer but, it's barely noticeable. In my opinion, pickup position is one of the biggest determinants of tone and Lakeland nailed that with the 55-02. The bridge PUP is far enough away from the bridge so that there is no "harshness" to the tone when using that PUP in isolation. The neck PUP is a single coil and they leave plenty of real estate between it and the neck for ease of "slapping". The bass has the best "B" string I've ever felt and the 3 band EQ gives you lots of tonal possibilities. Overall the bass just "feels" REALLY good and it immediately became my #1 instrument.

A couple of things bug me: I actually sent the bass back after it was first delivered because the coil switch seemed to be nonfunctional and the volume pot appeared to be defective. I'm used to a noticeable difference in tone when switching from HB to SC positions and I just can't convince myself that there is ANY difference in tone. When I got the bass back I did the "screwdriver tap test" and confirmed that the switch is indeed working... it just doesn't really do anything. The volume pot is going to be a problem if you are someone who needs to make volume adjustments from your instrument. The taper of the pot is such that the bass is pretty much ""all on" or "all off". There is no output from the bass until you get to the last few degrees of adjustment. I had the repair tech at Sweetwater compare it to other Lakeland basses and that is apparently how they all respond. For my purposes it was not a deal breaker, but be forewarned.

    Sweet(water) Bass!!

Picked up a 55-02 at Gearfest 2014. Got a good deal on it and I am quite pleased with this instrument. Setup was almost perfect right out of the "box". Really love the feel of that maple neck/fingerboard and it delivers a full range of tones. Gigged with it almost immediately with absolutely no problems. I suggest you strongly consider this unit in comparison to anything else in the price range. All my other guitars are hanging on the wall and acting all jealous right now!!

Ready to perform right out of the box!

My Sales Engineer (Mark) helped me pick out this awesome bass! I ordered it at about 10:30 on a Monday and it was at my house the next day when I came home in the afternoon. This bass looks and plays wonderfully. The action is set perfectly, and the tone is amazing! I took it to practice Wednesday night and will perform with it this weekend!
