LOVE AT FIRST FEEL
The other band members were surprised when I showed up for my first practice with the new bass. I like the acoustic sound. I love the electric tuner. I have not used it as an electric; we are all playing acoustic instruments.
An acoustic bass with the neck of an electric. If you've played a jazz bass the neck will feel familiar. Good tone both acousticly and amplified. The onboard tuner is a nice touch. Craftmanship was very good. I would have given it five stars except for the fact it is a little neck heavy due to the classic Fender headstock and the standard acoustic bronze strings just didn't do it for me. (I hate roundwounds so a good set of light flatwounds corrected the string problem.)
Mine is the original version bought new in 2010. First off, just about every ABG out there comes with bronze strings, and just about every one of them generate fret clatter because of it. And the sound, well it just don't sound like a bass to me. If you want your Fender Kingman (or about any other ABG) to sound like a bass you will have to get rid of the standard bronze strings. If you want the cool thump similar to a stand-up, I found that black nylon tapewounds do the trick without much loss in volume acoustically. Plugged in, you really get the thump! TI"s Acousticore strings have less tension that takes getting use to, and they don't have as much thump as the tapewounds, but they too will make playing your Kingman more enjoyable with less clatter, and your bass will sound more like a bass. The TI's are really expensive though. Overall, I've been using my Kingman for three years now and once I got the string issues laid to rest I'm really pleased with it and so is my duet partner. I'm currently using TI's but thinking about going back to the tapewounds. Mostly run it straight through a powered mixer during performances and it sounds great. Plays easily, stays in tune, and looks good, especially after I remove the pickguard. The workmanship is good and the Jazz neck is very comfortable. Maybe one day I'll get a Martin, but for now this is more than adequate.
