Amazing tone and build quality!

By Jeremy from Illinois on April 12, 2013 Music Background: Drummer for 15+ years, amateur recording engineer, hobby drum restorer

I just recently got this snare from Sweetwater (awesome service from AJ as always). I was looking for a snare that is a little dryer without harsh ringing overtones and a nice low tone. I think a lot of drummers are looking for that, there is a whole market of pre muffled heads and various dampening products that try to achieve it. Well, this drum seems to have been built just for that. With the stock heads (Remo Ambassadors top and bottom), I was blown away by sound. Low tunings sound beefy, and it'll handle high tunings without getting harsh and ringy. It'll also handle looser strainer settings without lots of extra buzz. I put a powerstroke 3 on it, which I feel is perfect for the sound I'm trying to get out of it. It just tamed the overtones a little further without muffling the life out of it. I could only find one or two good video demos of this snare. The ones I did find had the snare sounding too good to be true, but it sounds just as good in person.

The hardware and finish are both excellent quality. The wood has a unique color to it that's somewhere in between maple and mahogany. The strainer is smooth and all the hardware is fitted with rubber grommets. I could find any info on the bearing edge angles before I bought it. They appear to be 45 degrees with just the slightest rounding.

So, if you've been using tons of dampening, a snare with silly holes cut in it, or some other workaround to try to get a fat, dry tone, you should definitely give this drum a shot. I'll pretty much be playing this snare exclusively from now on.
