Sweetwater Advice

  • Sam Hillman

The Shure KSM141 mics are my go-to pair of small diaphragms - both in my studio and on location. Their mechanical pattern switching is innovative and unique. Usually pencil condenser mics have separate capsules that cost extra, but with the KSM141 it's like having two completely different mics in one! The cardioid pattern is tight and “laser-like” which ensures great imaging in XY or AB recordings such as drum overheads. The KSM141s in Omni are my favorite for stereo recordings of choirs and orchestras because there is no bass roll-off at a distance, and when used with a Jecklin/Schneider disc baffle technique it always sounds natural, detailed, and accurate; like you are in the audience hearing it live!

    Clean and versatile

I've mostly used these mics in the omni position for recording acoustic piano. The sound is clean and has a very up-front, in-your-face feel to it in terms of the space it creates. The filters offer great flexibility and it's incredibly easy to switch between omni and cardioid patterns. I'm really happy with this purchase...very, very good value.

    Great pair for overheads

These mics are truly amazing. They deliver a gorgeous and clean sound on anything you put them. My primary use is on choral overheads and/or piano. For my choir I'm currently running these into a Zoom H6 and occasionally using a Focusrite ISA preamp with them. The sound is amazing. Great set of mics. You can't go wrong with them.

    A sweet pair

I was looking for a nice set of studio mics and bought these. I've had them in my home studio now for about 4 years and absolutely love them. I use them for my acoustic guitars, as well as mic'ing my guitar and bass amps during recording sessions. They are probably the best sounding and most versatile mics you can buy for under $1000. Try one directly in front of your amp/acoustic guitar and the other a few feet away for great results.
