Unique pickups

I ordered the Skinner Burst set for my Les Paul - replaced an Alnico 2 custom shop Seth Lover bridge that was slightly potted and an Alnico 3 custom shop Seth Lover neck that was matched to the bridge. I found the stock SL neck to be a bit muddy when driven into distortion and an Alnico 3 tamed this. Same LP has 50s wiring and an aluminum stoptail with steel studs which have been tonal improvements over the stock parts. I'm not one to replace stuff just for giggles and the custom shop Seth Lovers are AWESOME and are going into my semi-hollow guitar - so I decided to get the JB set and wasn't over-expecting to hear a huge improvement as compared with new strings. The JB set imparts a unique and detailed tone that has great output with nice harmonics, a wide range and the little naunces come through as well. Changes in the guitars volume offer superb clean tones. The JB neck pickup is beautifully balanced with the bridge, doesn't get muddy when driven hard, and has an improved string-to-string balance as compared to the previous neck bucker. I noticed the greatest difference with the bridge as it has a greater clarity, doesn't get ice-picky bright, the mids are full and the bass is tighter than the previous pickup. When pushed, the bridge holds the detail and doesn't get mushy. This set is quite expensive and I am happy with these pickups as they have moved my LP more towards the vintage tone that I recall hearing through a great R9 that I played a few times. I primarily play through a Swart Atomic Jr and these pickups, combined with my LP sound beautiful through this amp and was the basis of comparison between pickup sets (guitar-cord-amp). Seth Lovers are great pickups, but this set tonally surpasses them. Sweetwater customer service is top notch.

Excellent Pickups

These Skinner Burst Humbuckers are simply one of the best sounding sets of pickups I have ever played! I dropped them in my Les Paul and they have since given that guitar a whole new life. In my set, the neck and bridge pickups have a DCR of 8.2k and 8.6k respectively, so when adjusted to the proper height this set has an amazing sense of balance between both pickups. These pickups cover practically almost every style beautifully. I can use these pickups for Blues, Jazz, Hard Rock and anything in between. While these PAF style pickups have a healthy amount of output, what really sold me was the clarity that they brought to my playing. Clean tones sound bright and chime-like, and dirty tones sound punchy, articulate and really scream. Overall, these are rock solid pickups that I'd recommend to anyone looking for that authentic '59 PAF sound without the ridiculous price tag and get the best possible tone out of their guitar. Lastly, the aged nickel finish has a great vibe and having Joe Bonamassa's and Seymour Duncan's signatures on the undersides of each pickup is a pretty awesome bonus!

Sound Great but Do Not Fit Properly

Sound = 4.5 stars. Looks = 5 stars. Ease of install = 1 star. These pick ups are slightly larger than the original 1978 Les Paul pick ups and the '59 and JB Duncan pick ups that were installed. I had to route out the pick up cavity and trim the plactic pick up rings. This made what should have been an easy install a nightmare. Therefore the 2 star rating. Why couldn't Duncan make these 1/16" smaller? It makes no sense to me.
