Could Not Be Better

I bought this guitar (the Javier Reyes LTD 8-string) because I wanted a modern shred machine. It is absolutely that - but so much more. As Mr. Reyes himself states in the video promoting his signature model instrument, it's designed for clean and intricate playing as well, and IMHO it does that much better than I had even hoped. The 5-way pickup selector is complemented by a mini-switch coil split, and I mean it when I say each and every pick-up / coil split scenario is unique and useful. I get sounds from this instrument I cannot get from any other, and isn't that ultimately the purpose of having any instrument? For those unfamiliar with 8-string playing, know that the lowest-pitched string can be troublesome. It sounds spectacular by itself, but easily finds itself in sympathetic vibration when not in active use, and can overwhelm your other notes. Constant attention must be paid with palm and fret-hand mutes, especially at higher gain settings. I've found myself multiple times in the middle of tearing up the hottest part of a solo, unable to quite articulate as I want, and finding the low string ringing out fully, muddying what I'd been trying to do. You can't just play this exceptional piece the same as you ever have any other guitar. It's simply a slightly altered approach, and you'll be reminded audibly if you forget. But there's nothing like having full-range guitar bass notes available to you while you're exploring the upper register of the standard six strings. And you can imagine the intensity of taking that all the way down to low F-sharp (or lower if you feel the need go subsonic). And while the 7-string B can be attacked full force, that 8th is awfully wobbly under that much duress. (I've played other 8-string guitars; this is just how they are) You can grind it with much less effort, and it does respond; but too much is far too easy to do. Tread lightly and do heavy damage. The pickups are able to whisper, scream, sing sweetly - whatever you play and however you play it is what you're gonna get. I haven't had to fight or coax notes out. It's extremely responsive to your touch. Good sustain. I love the bridge. Locking tuners have handled all I've thrown at them with ease. The body lays perfectly against me and despite its size and weight, is extremely comfortable to play. It's, to me, a perfect design. The extended scale (27") is great for me - I love to stretch out when I'm playing. Chords fall under my fingers the way I want them to, and the shape of the neck couldn't be better. It's so much wider than my Jackson, Charvel, Ibanez, PRS guitars. But everything is (easily - for me) reachable. I got nervous when I first wrapped my fingers around the neck (almost dropped it - it's SO BIG), but within 10 seconds I was completely at ease. I could not be happier with the purchase of my JR-608. My sales rep, Nathan Wall, was fantastic to work with as always. I have had nothing but good experiences with Sweetwater since I first dealt with them in 2014.
