Re-creation of a Classic Roland Synth

The Roland JX-03 gives you the sound and control of the company's classic JX-3P synthesizer in a compact module with battery operation and a built-in speaker, so you can be creative anywhere. A member of Roland's limited-edition Boutique range, this little 4-voice powerhouse retains the distinctive sonic character, feel, and user interface of the JX-3P. As did its progenitor, the JX-03 offers immediate push-button access to presets, and for instant sound sculpting, the front panel has all 24 knobs from the original PG-200 controller. Also onboard the Roland JX-03 are new waveforms and cross-modulation options, as well as an expanded range for its two digitally controlled oscillators.

Roland JX-03 Synth Module at a Glance:
  • Classic JX-3P sound with PG-200 control
  • New sound-sculpting options
  • 16-step sequencer helps you sketch out ideas
Classic JX-3P sound with PG-200 control

Launched in 1983, the JX-3P remains somewhat of a hidden gem in the vintage-synth pantheon. If you were looking for instant access to huge, stable Roland sounds, it obliged with an easy-to-use, button-driven interface in lieu of the knob-and-slider-festooned top panel sported by many of its contemporaries. Attach the optional PG-200 controller, though, and you could tap into the true power of the JX-3P's highly programmable synth engine. Today's JX-03 module gives you the panel layout of the PG-200 (including all 24 knobs) for instant, direct access to the flexible synth architecture that lurks beneath the bonnet of the Roland JX-03.

New sound-sculpting options

As they did with other members of the Boutique series, Roland added in subtle improvements that weren't found on the original models. The JX-03 delivers additional waveforms and extended range for both DCOs, as well as bonus waveforms for the LFO. The second DCO also has extra cross-modulation options. To the never-ending delight of Sweetwater synth geeks, these new enhancements further expand the sound-creation capability of the battle-tested JX engine.

16-step sequencer helps you sketch out ideas

The 16-step sequencer onboard the Roland JX-03 is a veritable scratchpad that lets you sketch out new ideas without a ton of gear; you can even use it without a keyboard. With no keyboard connected, the JX-03's ribbon controllers let you preview a sound - an easy way to program patches quickly. If you need keyboard input, however, the optional 25-note, velocity-sensitive K-25m is an ideal solution. Simply dock the JX-03 in the keyboard, and you can tilt the module for convenient access to all its front-panel controls.

Roland JX-03 Synth Module Features:

Compared to JX-3P

Having an original JX-3P to compare it to, it was spot-on comparing the presets. Plus, you have the knobs (no more PG-200 at ridiculous prices) - great job Roland!

Back to 1983

Earthquake in Phoenix

I looked at all the boutiques, but this one, I thought, had the best potential for a wide variety of sounds. I bought it for the string sound, and it only took a little adjustment from the stock sounds until I really had something nice, and saving your presets is easy. I started messing with reversing the envelope that effects pitch, and I found these sounds that, as they dive into the lower octives, started shaking every wall in my building. Latrr I found out there eas an absolute earthqake in my area. I think the bass ability of this synth started the quake!!!

From Package to Play in 5 minutes - SOLID!

Big things really do come in small packages (with candy!).I was torn as to which of the Boutique series to get first, but the Sweetwater video and the features convinced me that the JX-03 would give me the sound I was after with the flexibility to take it further. I was not wrong. Despite playing on-and-off for 30 years, this is actually my first knob-per-function synth, and I'm not sure I can ever go back to menu diving. I've craved a vintage Jupiter, Juno or JX for so long, but my space is limited and vintage comes with its own headaches at times. Roland has a real hit here, because I no longer have to choose, or pay inflated prices. The videos are great, but just can't convey how rich and deep the sounds of the JX-03 are. The interface is extremely accessible and easy to learn, and I had this hooked up by MIDI to a fullsize keyboard in no time. In fact, I had it out of the package, popped in the included batteries, and was playing it in less than 5 minutes, just using the sliders and the awesome sequencer.I'm a big fan of my JD-Xi, but this is something really special. I'll be picking up the JP08 and JU06 as soon as possible.Positives: absolutely solid build, deep sound, easy to use, value for price, Sweetwater service and FAST shipping!Negatives: awful giant roadmap-style manual (go get the PDF), some features like velocity may require the K25M keyboard (which I already have on backorder)Recommendation: watch some videos of the whole line, pick out the sounds you love, start with the one you like most. Once you have it in your hands, you probably won't be able to resist the others!

Small, Powerful, Portable!!!

Just received the JX-03. Sounds fantastic. Read the included manual, it helps with the button presses needed for the Delay and step sequencer functions. The packaging is very nice, considering using the box as a carrying case for live shows.Setup (using MIDI and audio) was a breeze. Battery power is a plus in my opinion, considering the size of the unit, which is SMALL. However, there is fairly good room for a large-handed person to twist and turn knobs like a mad scientist. Roland did a great job emulating the JX-3P, but the added features not only make great sense, it makes the JX a different weapon of its own. The sine waves sound fantastic, the cross modulation options are plentiful and doesn't leave me wanting more. And the included delay is very good sounding. If you've never purchased from Sweetwater, you should-My rep, Anthony Longano took great care with me and made my service experience a great one. Shipping took a day, but I live a state away. So far, there's nothing I don't like about this unit. It does have 1/8" jacks for output and input...but a 1/4" jack would have added little except for extra size. The build quality and attention to detail that Roland put into this unit makes it worth the price, which is currently less than a 1/3 of what you'd need to spend towards a fully working JX-3P with a PG200 (for programming). Also, MUCH LESS PORTABLE than the JX-03. I'm loving this's going with me for my next gig, for sure!
