Hendrix on a budget
This pedal delivers good Univibe tones. If you can pony up for a Fulltone DejaVibe instead you will have a much better pedal all around. The JHM7 has limited functional controls which makes it hard to dial the speed control in to match your tempo. The tone shines on clean tones. However when you add an overdrive pedal or a dirty amp channel the pedal tends to lose some of its tonal luster. For $129 though it is a great pedal nonetheless and will get you great Univibe tones. The DejaVibe gives you better control of speed bc it can integrate an expression pedal and the DejaVibe sounds great with fuzz or drive. For an extra $70 you get more Vibe for the bucks with the DejaVibe. But for the money the JHM7 can"t be beat.
Essential Jimi Sound
I bought the Dunlop JHM7 Jimi Hendrix Univibe to fill some simple but much-needed modulation sounds in my 70’s-style hard rock songs. If you listen to Hendrix, Trower, Gilmour – or Isley Brothers and Zappa….you have to use a Univibe somewhere. I found it a good and somewhat subtler version of a phase shifter, and the controls for speed, range and level of effects are pretty good. The vibrato mode is a little less expressive than I’d like, but I’m still playing with it. Chassis is well-built and it’s easy to use.
Overall, a fairly uncomplicated pedal by today’s standards, but it’s priceless for replicating Hendrix-era sound, especially when coupled with a fuzz pedal. I’m glad I bought it early and got the limited edition Hendrix artwork – it’s like a SLIGHT RETURN, man.
