The Player Series Fretless J Bass

First introduced in 1960, the Fender Jazz Bass has withstood the test of time to become one of the most played and recorded instruments here at Sweetwater — and in modern music history! The great Jaco Pastorius famously removed the frets from his Jazz Bass, thus creating a new classic: the fretless Jazz Bass. The Fender Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass celebrates this heritage with upgrades that working musicians will appreciate. With its offset alder body and fast-action maple neck, this J Bass is incredibly comfortable to play and lets you pull off extremely tight runs and grooves with ease. It also delivers the legendary J Bass punch and growl, courtesy of two Player Series Alnico 5 single-coil pickups. Get your groove on with the Fender Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass.

Fender's Player Series: vintage vibe, modern edge

For their new Player Series basses, Fender went back to the drawing board with updated radii for more historically accurate body shapes, new vintage-inspired finishes, and a classic logo that harkens back to the Fenders of yesteryear. But these smooth-playing instruments also look to the future with new Alnico 5 pickups that crank out legendary Fender tone by the boatload. There's never been a better time to get into a genuine Fender bass. Pick up a Player Series bass and lay down the groove with a modern classic.

Fretless, with fret-line markers

Much of the mythos surrounding Jaco's original Jazz Bass (dubbed the "Bass of Doom") centers around what, exactly, he did to the fingerboard during the fretted-to-fretless conversion. The widely held belief is that he ripped the frets out and patched the holes that remained with wood filler; sanded, and then slathered the fingerboard with several coats of marine epoxy to withstand the use of roundwound strings. The takeaway is that the wood filler remained visible. Now, Jaco's intonation was flawless regardless of fret lines, but most of us could use some visual aids when we pick up a fretless. Done. The Fender Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass sports tidy white inlaid fret line markers and side dot position markers centered between the lines.

The timeless J Bass sound

Whether you play rock or country, funk or blues, or (naturally) jazz, the Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass will deliver the tone you need. This J Bass comes loaded with a pair of Fender-designed Player Series Alnico 5 single-coil pickups that deliver the classic J Bass sound you've heard on countless recordings. And with individual volume controls for each pickup plus a master tone control, you'll be able to dial in the exact sound you want.

Shaped for comfort and performance

One of the things that made the J Bass an instant hit with working bass players was its unique offset-waist body shape. Perfect whether playing standing or seated, the classic Jazz Bass contoured body will make those marathon gigs and sessions much more comfortable. With its slim C-profile neck that's only 1.5" wide at the nut, this instrument was originally designed to appeal to jazz bassists. The slender neck not only facilitates the fluid execution of fast, complex bass lines; it's perfect for any musical style — which is why you hear the Fender Jazz Bass in every genre of music.

Join the ranks of Jazz Bass players

Pick up this Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass and you're entering the company of some of the greatest bass players of all time. World-renowned bassists such as Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, John Paul Jones, and Victor Bailey have all chosen the J Bass as their go-to axe. If you want the round, punchy, growling J Bass tone with iconic fretless "mwah," you're on the right page. Pick up the Fender Player Series Fretless Jazz Bass and drive your music with legendary tone.

Great Fretless Bass!!

This is a good fretless. Be advised though the action from fretlines 1 to around 5 is really low because the nut is cut really low obviously because its a fretless. I would suggest bigger gauge strings if you want the first position action to be higher just experiment and see what works. LaBella White Nylons are fantastic on this bass as well.

Fretless Heaven

It is my Birthaday and while sitting in my Studio aroumd noon, FedEx dropped off my present. Fender Player Fretless Jazz Bass. I have a MIM Fretted Jazz and an MIM Strat that I have enjoyed for years. This is Quality stuff for a killer price point. I pluuged the new Fretless into my Apollo Quad (from Sweetwater) and pulled up an SSL channel strip. This is "The Sound!". Killer instrument. I will be laying down tracks soon.
Sweetwater has set a high Standard in their customer service, candy, and phone calls (Thanks Jeff!).
The biggest reason I purchased this from Sweetwater is the 55 point check they do on all guitars. The Fretless was set up and ready to go right out of the box. Thank You Sweetwater and Fender, I am in Fretless Heaven.

player fretless bass

I rally like it!! it plays really nice. A friend ask me to do a video with him and he ask please bring the fretless. He noticed a markable difference in the sound and resonance. I'd d tell anyone considering a fretless, this is a very good one. It's a Fender, so it always delivers. I have a Jaco fretless, but it took years torquier it, but this one I have no problem taking out on a gig. the guys at Sweetwater can answer any questions you might have about the bass. The price is RIGHT!!

Stepped Up!

I've had a few MIM Fender basses over the years, particularly Jazz basses. Had a strong desire to have another fretless Jazz to work out on (fretless can be very meditative), so I took a long hard look at this new "Player Series" line Fender has come out with.

Long story short - this bass immediately felt much improved over the ones I've had in the past, right down to the smooth playing Pau Ferro fretboard. The finish on the neck was surprisingly smooth and fast. I tune to drop D + 1/2 step down as a rule - and the low notes held fast. The pickups were possibly the biggest surprise; in the past I've almost immediately replaced Jazz pickups with hand wound aftermarket (I won't say the brand) - but these delivered all the punch and richness I expect from a Jazz bass.

I love that Sweetwater has photos to see of the actual instrument you are buying. It really helped in picking this one out. Played great right out of the box. Now is the time to grab a MIM Fender, IMO. Cheers!
