Geddy Lee's Go-to Bass!

The Fender Custom Shop Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass is the closest you or anyone else is likely to get to Geddy Lee's own beloved bass. A faithful companion to Lee for over three decades, the original '72 J Bass that the Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass was modeled on is on its third neck, and its body shows evidence of all kinds of wear. The team of expert luthiers responsible for this instrument re-created both its flaws and modifications perfectly, giving you both an aged look and extremely comfortable feel. Add to that a pair of custom '75 hand-wound single-coil jazz bass pickups and a Leo Quan Badass II bridge, and the Fender Custom Shop Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass also gets full marks for tone.

Fender Custom Shop Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass at a Glance:
  • A spot-on re-creation of Geddy Lee's all-time favorite bass
  • Custom pickups deliver an essential element of Geddy Lee's tone
  • One of only 50 in this collectable Fender Custom Shop production run
A spot-on re-creation of Geddy Lee's all-time favorite bass

In 1977, when Geddy Lee bought his '72 J Bass for just $200 from a pawn shop, he probably had no idea how far he'd take this bass, or how far this bass would take him. It made its debut on Rush's 1981 album Moving Pictures on such iconic tracks as "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer" and eventually became the bass Lee judges all other basses by. The Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass's oil-finished all-maple neck marks one of the modifications Lee made to his original bass, as are the locking strap pins. Just as surprising, however, are the things Fender didn't change, outfitting the Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass with such period-correct hardware as vintage locking tuning machines and a bone nut.

Custom pickups deliver an essential element of Geddy Lee's tone

If you've ever tried to re-create it, then you know that there's something special about Geddy Lee's bass tone. You can set up the exact same amp rig Lee uses onstage (ask your Sales Engineer to find out how) but without the right bass, you'll never get the thump, spank, or dynamic intensity you're after. Part of that has to do with the pickups you'll find on the Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass. These custom '75 hand-wound single-coil jazz bass pickups serve up the full-range clarity and open warmth you need. And with the bridge pickup spaced closer to the bridge - the way they did it back it the '70s - the Limited Geddy Lee 1972 Jazz Bass is excellent for slap and pop styles as well.
