Get the legendary look, sound, and feel of a Hofner Violin Bass

First introduced by lifelong violin-maker Walter Hofner at the 1956 Frankfort Musik Messe, the Hofner Violin Bass might have been an all but forgotten footnote in modern music instrument history if a young and nearly broke Paul McCartney hadn't picked one up in 1961. Favoring it for its symmetrical shape (Hofner didn't yet offer a lefty model back then) and woody sound, McCartney and the Beatles by extension made the Violin Bass one of the most iconic bass guitars of all time. And the things that made this instrument such a great choice for Paul - the balance, the tone, and the cool vintage vibe - are all yours when you pick up this Ignition Violin Bass from Sweetwater.

Hofner - creating fantastic stringed instruments since 1887

Karl Hofner sold his first violins in 1887, and the Hofner company has been hand-building exceptional instruments ever since. When Sir Paul McCartney purchased a 500/1 Violin Bass to use with The Beatles, Hofner became a household name amongst musicians worldwide. With a focus on top-notch craftsmanship and tone, you'll feel and hear the difference when you get the Ignition Violin Bass in your hands.

My Very First Bass

I waited a long time for my first bass guitar since I was a young producer, but I did not know which one to choose. I saw this one on sale during Black Friday and had to get it. The first one I received unfortunately was damaged on the shipping to me, BUT... Sweetwater techs who always provide the best service, gave me a brand new one and I shipped the old one back. The bass itself is very small, very light weight, and is very retro, which I love. I cannot compare it to other basses, since I've never owned one, and only played other peoples basses, but I have to say, it is nice. I record it to all my songs and it fits in just right with my whole setup.

Not THE Hofner but A Hofner

I went to this year's Gearfest with this on my shopping list. I wanted to add bass to my skill set but the necks on most basses are too wide for my diminutive hands. This bass is perfect for me. Certainly lighter than the top line Hofners and I treat it with extra care. It has a very vintage tone to it, but it surprised me by having more thump and drive than I expected. Setup by Sweetwater was dead on.

Hofner Beatle Bass

Very light. I put LaBella flat wounds on it & it blows me away. The short scale neck is fantastic. Thank you Bart Good.

Better than ever

It's been over four decades ago since I had a Hofer bass. I traded it I for a fender jazz bass while I was at Berklee College of Music. After my jazz bass was stolen a couple years back,I decided to replace it with a Hofner bass. When I saw the price tag for one like the original I had, I decided to try this one. I figured if I didn't like it, I would just fork out the $3000 cash, but I'm glad I didn't. I do believe This one sounds better than my original German Hofner. I'm expecting the electronics to degrade with time, so when that happens I will replace with the German made ones; as well with the tuning pegs. But who knows, it may pass the test of time; two years of solid playing and not one problem. Yes, it does sound fantastic; I use a fender 500w bass amp. Finally I will say Sweetwater rocks, service and knowledge surpasses their competition.
