…roll the tubes and this is the only amp you need…
I have the black panel Hot Rod DeVille III 410. I rolled two 12AY7's into V1 and V2 and a 12AT7 into P1 and I could not be happier. Took away all the earsplitting harshness and excess gain. Clean Channel is pristine and both drive channels are really useful now: 'drive' is now a boosted signal and 'more drive' is now a useful drive channel. I have inputs 1 and 2 for different output levels and I added a Doc Watson 'Lion Tamer' in the loop and I now have my rig for any occasion. It takes 10 minutes and it really is that easy. Best of all, I can always roll it back to stock (no permanent mods). Cheers!
Hot Rod Deville, 410
This is a workhorse amp that can do anything. I first ordered the 68 vintage Fender twin reverb that looked just like the twin I purchased in 1972. But, that one had some kind of weird static sound that would happen at different times and different venues. Sweetwater was all over my call for a solution. They sent me another twin to replace it but it had the same problem. I returned it with no intention of going further with Fender but James Masterson, Sweetwater sales engineer, suggested the Hot Rod DeVille an a substitute for the twin. He was right. It does everything the twin would do. The thing I like about it that is is configured so closed to a Fender Super Reverb. I had a Super before the Twin but was just too heavy to lug around. Both the Twin and Super Reverbs were 80+ pounds. The Hot Rod is 60 pounds. Still heavy but manageable. A great amp, at a great price, that rocks.
Shimmering Clean
This amp s' 4X10's are so crisp ,clear ,almost shimmering with single coils. My Strat and Tele sound like you heard Fenders sound in the 60's ,70's before too many pedals were available. Buy give it a bit of gain and plug your Les Paul Hummers into it, and it bites like Steve Marriot ;s sound in Humble Pie , slightly nasty. Best amp I've ever had. I've had re-issue Vibrolux, Champs, etc. This is the one I kept. I am either using this Fender or I use an Orange. I am not comparing the 2 ,they can't be ,it's like apples and oranges(no pun intended) If you want that Kenny Wayne sound Or Clapton, don't waste your money on something else, this is the beast (as it is nicknamed in my house). I can't say enough good things about this amp, I can find fault with most everything, but not this. Plus ,you can run an external cab . You don't need 100 watts ,it starts to break up with too much power, 60 watts ,with a mic on stage ,the sound is un f%%king believable. Try one out ,if you do it in a store, get them to let you into a teaching room or the such ,set it on 6 and let it rip. You'll understand if you are a real player, especially in the blues rock arena.
Fender Clean and Marshall Crunch
This is a portable stack! It has the Fender Clean tone backed up with a very good sounding spring reverb. The tone controls allow you to get the sound you want.
The Crunch Channel has Gain and More Gain so it's like having a 2nd. and a 3rd. Chanel besides the Clean Channel. I used to have a large Marshall JCM 900 MK1V Full Stack with 2 JCM 900 Speaker Cabs loaded with Celestion V30's a total of 8 of 12" quality speakers. That rig was pure rock heaven. I sold it when I moved because I was thinking it was causing me to loose my hearing. Anyway a couple of years back I ordered the Fender Hot Rod DeVille from Joseph Seccu at Sweetwater to fill the void left after I sold my Marshall JCM 900 Full Stack. This Fender on the Crunch (Gain and More Gain) Channels can get so loud and it also has a nice Gain knob that when cranked allows for a Marshally Tone at high volume and even at quit room volumes. It's also only 55 pounds total even with 4 of 10" speakers and 60 watts. This makes it portable. That's how an amplifier should be, great sounding clean or distorted with a choice of channels, reverb and portability. Having the ability to really get loud and crank is something not many amps can achieve and that's what sets this amp apart from most of the rest. It's really loud, while being portable and great sounding. Honestly what more can you ask of an amp?
I don't write a lot of reviews but I am so happy with this amp and since I have had it for 3 years now with no problems I decided to do a review. One more thing, this amp is designed to allow you the owner to change the tubes because it has a built in "bias" port. No need to pay a service technician. I use an inexpensive meter to set the bias. There is even a "How to bias the Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410 III amp on YouTube.
Best Fender tube amp of all time
As the progenitor is the Bassman this Hotrod Deville amp spawned from an iconic blues amp loins to become the perfect tone machine.
The balance of 4 eminence classic speakers coupled with a 3 x 12axt pre
Section driving the senseous 2 6L6 iconic bad boys the only thing that must happen is rock Angels, coming out the cab. The nuances and vocality, dynamics and tome come together in perfect harmony
Can be appreciated at all levels of "loudness"
Buy this amp,,,give it a name like Steve or BB it will be your friend for life.
The 4'Eminence speaker complement is synergy in action
Don't pass up treating yourself to hours of sonic bliss...Ger this amp
It's a keeper
Classic Fender Clean
This amp is a beast! I was looking for an amp that could deliver shimmering fender cleans at high volumes, but I wanted to spend slightly less than the 65 twin 'verb sells for. I am glad I pulled the trigger on this amp. The headroom on the clean channel is outstanding - the neck pickup on my strat, a little bit of spring reverb, and I am in tone heaven. I play mostly classic rock, blues, and improvisational jam music. Primary guitars are a Japanese strat, a 1980 Les Paul Custom, and an Epiphone Les Paul. I played this amp at an outdoor gig the day I bought it. I didn't have time to figure out it's sweet spots, so I basically set everything at 5 o'clock and let her rip, and I was blown away. within 30 second of our first song, I knew I had hit the money. I noticed that the 4 10 speakers cut through the mix a lot better than my previous 412 setup. The other guitar player in our band uses a 100 watt Marshall DSL, and I had to turn my amp down a bit because I was cutting through the mix so well.
One thing I will say about this amp is that it is extremely loud - 2 o'clock on the volume will rattle the house. I only use it for live gigs, and ended up getting a used blues Jr. for practice.
The drive channels are so-so; they sound great when the drive is dialed in just a bit, but at higher gain the drive is sort of muddy. A tube screamer makes this amp sing like bird. The spring reverb sound amazing. This amp is very responsive to my playing/picking, is very dynamic, and the eq is very musical throughout the bands. This amp is a true classic sedan that produces pure tone magic, and the cleans are outstanding, even in large venue settings with the master volume cranking.
Great amp
Best clean sound I've ever heard, period. the 4 ten inch speakers are great for guitar, and cover all needed frequencies, with lots of volume and bottom end. Throw a tube screamer in front of it, and watch out!
Great Amp
This 410 sounds excellent with plenty of volume. Sturdy footswitch included. Even my acoustic/electric sounds great through it.
Excellent Amp
Bought this amp after owning only solid state amplifiers for years, and decided to finally spend the extra money and go for the tubes. I'm mainly a heavy rock/metal player, but I wanted to focus on an amp that would provide crisp clean tones, as there are so many quality distortion pedals on the market that do a fine job of providing that side of my sound. This amp is definitely not a standalone metal amp...but the clean channel is outstanding. The clarity is excellent. It is the best sounding amp I've ever played through clean. The distortion channels are also very good. Great classic rock and mild overdrive tones, and great for blues. But yes...you will need an aftermarket pedal if you are looking for that supersaturated, rip your face off metal tone. But as I said, thats what pedals are for. And this amp handles them without a hiccup. With a Mesa Boogie throttle box in front of it...it screams and punches you in the gut when palm muting. This amp is loud, but very balanced and projects a very warm and full sound. No regrets. If you need an amp that can handle larger rooms, sounds amazing, and provides versatility as far as different styles of music go, this amp will give you that. Metal guys and girls....don't hesitate. You know your going to use a pedal anyways for your distortion...so just buy an amp that sounds great clean and run your pedal into it. This my first order from sweetwater, and the customer service is excellent and very personable. David Snyder was my rep, and took the time to follow up on my satisfaction with this order, and has been extemely helpful in working with me in finding additional products I am interested in buying. And that is what I found to be cool about Sweetwater, and what separates them from the competition. They seem to genuinely care about the satisfaction of their customers instead of just taking your money and blowing you off once it's in their pockets....like another retailer I won't spell out (but will initial...GC). As long as Sweetwater can get me what I want....they have my business. Excellent company to make your purchases from.
