Wow, Just WOW...
I cannot believe how great this guitar sounds and plays. The super hilotrons are an amazing pickup, and the three pickup format with the on/off switch works perfectly.
The bridge pickup with the middle pickup off jangles and sparkles like a rick, with the middle pickup on it has a more rocking tone. The neck pickup sounds beautiful as well in both positions, it can be jazzy, or a darker sound as well. It also sounds like a classic gretsch, though hilotrons have a different tone then filtertrons. The guitar is a tone monster and one has to intentionally make it sound bad for it to sound bad.
The fit and finish of the guitar is beautiful like most Korean guitars these days, meaning it stands up to the some of the best Japanese and American guitars. The 5 ply maple construction put's it up there with some of the best instruments out there.
Some have state the quality of this guitar is very close to the japanese pro-lines. I think that may be the case as well. The maple and spruce combo has a great tone. The weight is a little heavier then a typical gretsch, but pretty typical of semi-hollowbody guitars.
With that being said, I am wondering why Gretsch has went with the super hilotrons in the neck position only with the other electromatic center blocks. It is a great pickup that really shines in the bridge. Either way the fact they did something different with this guitar is great. This is an outstanding instrument, and an instant classic. Let's hope gretsch keeps with this one.
