Crisp with great mids

By Jimmy Ether from Atlanta on June 27, 2023 Music Background: Recording Engineer, musician, songwriter of 30+ years

I'm usually not a fan of 10" speaker for guitar cabs, but these are excellent. Plenty of lows. Crisp highs without being brittle. And that elevated and focused mid you expect from a Celestion, but without the unnatural sounding eq bump you get from a greenback. Also seem less limited and more touch sensitive than most Celestions. They're heavy though.

Great sound...Adds Tons of Headroom!

Great sound...Adds Tons of Headroom! This is the best sounding replacement speaker for an older Princeton Reverb! Get nothing else!

Excellent speaker

By Jasper on September 19, 2021

This is a nice upgrade for my Marshall SV20C with a bit more chimmy top end and sensitivity.
And buying from Sweetwater half way across the globe during pandemic was easy with the help of my sales consultant, Blake Rice.

Brings my amp to life

By Daniel on August 25, 2021

Alnico gold arrived today - popped it in the Princeton 68 custom and it is awesome. Amp really breaths at different volumes now. Before with the celestion 10-30 it was just too flubby at loud volumes and lifeless at low volumes. Struggled with usually excellent drive pedals too (tumnus, tubescreamer less so). Breakup wasn't as nice as with other amps I own. Had one good volume about 5 - which was ok if I rode the volume on my guitars. Now I can play lower volumes at home and louder volumes with a band and not lose out on what this magic amp is capable of.

Fender Frontman 25r, G10 Gold

By Eric Leffingwell from RI on August 11, 2021 Music Background: 35+ years of band and studio recording.

Ok, the 25r is a budget amp, agreed. But, it has a great sound out of the gate for what it is. So, we make a simple upgrade by swapping out the speaker. My choice, the G10 gold 8ohm 45w, it's a fantastic top shelf speaker, twice the cost of the amp, respectfully, but that's how we roll. It added a fuller dimension to the entire tone of this amp and brought it to a much higher, professional level. I use this amp for my small gigs with a mic draped in front and a Strat and it sounds magnificent. If a drop of beer falls on this amp, we'll call it the angels share and not give it a second thought, because it's a budget amp, that now sounds f'n great. Cheers! PS, I switched out the grill badge for a tail, because it looks cooler.

Awesome Speaker!

By Michael from San Francisco on July 27, 2021

I put a pair of these in my Fender 68 Custom Vibrolux. It really made a marked improvement over the stock G Ten 30s. It not only gave the amp a much better bass response which was sorely lacking with the stock speakers, but it improved the overall tone of the amp completely! You won't be disappointed!

Great match for a Princeton Reverb

By Colm Boran from Novi, MI on February 27, 2021

I have a vintage (1977) Fender Princeton Reverb that has (developed) a very fizzy and unpleasant overdrive sound when pushed hard. In addition to a circuitry mod where I added some series impedance to the phase inverter grid (which helped, see the video link below), I changed to this speaker as well. I'm happy to report that the fizzy sound is essentially gone, even with the volume control dimed.

This speaker has a warmer upper bass and a more pronounced midrange response than the original speaker. Compared to the previous speaker, that means this Celestion speaker is essentially more efficient at those frequencies, which means the amp doesn't need to deliver as much power in that frequency range in order to have a balanced tone. Now I can keep the bass control of the amp at a lower setting than before, and still have plenty of low end.

The bass frequencies are important from an electrical perspective. Those frequencies represent a difficult and heavy load for the amp's power supply and output stage, causing the supply to sag and the output to sound flabby. By keeping the bass control at a lower level, there is less sag in the power supply, and also seems to have less "spiky" content in the output stage, which was the source of the fizzy sound (see the video link below for more info).

Anyone looking to retain their Princeton Reverb's sweetness and also enhance the overdrive tones should definitely give this speaker a try. It's an easy mod that requires no soldering or special electrical skill, and you can always restore your amp to its original state if you don't like it.

Celstian Alnico Gold 10" Jim Swain

By Jay Cawley - Smilin' Fish Studio from Santa Fe, NM on June 9, 2020 Music Background: Touring pro. Studio owner.

So, bought a Vox AC10 a few months back. Wanted to play with tones and move some more air, so ordered two Celestian Gold Alnico 10 inch speakers and put them in an extension cab. Wow! A perfect match. Jim Swain made it all happen fast w/ an excellent price. Best studio guitar tones ever. No kidding. Thanks Jim and all at Sweetwater!

I have a Fender 25r (Budget amp) and finally replaced the speaker after 15 years and what a difference. The clean channel sounds phenomenal and will only get better the more it breaks in.

Finally took the plunge!

By Jeffrey Harrington from Madison, TN on September 28, 2019 Music Background: Advanced - non-professional

I have wanted a Celestion Blue for years. Problem is, at 15watts, it would take two for my lowest wattage amp, and these babies are expensive!

Bought a Princeton Reverb custom with the 10" Ten30 speaker almost a year ago.
That speaker is ok for low level playing, which is what I purchased the amp for. Buy turn it up, and it "flubbs out"!

I decided to purchase this 10" gold after reading some reviews.

I installed it about 10 days ago. I'd say I realistically have about 4 solid hours playing time so far.

At first I was like: This is a bit too "Warm" for my liking. But in the last two days I have noticed it changing into a very nice balance between the "warm" lows and mids, and the "Chimey" upper mids and highs.

I am beginning to understand why people love these speakers so much.
They say it takes a good ten hours of playing to get a speaker broke in.

This amp sounded good as delivered.
A set of JJ tubes improved on that, but this speaker is wonderful!

I imagine when this speaker is fully broke in, it is going to be a very premium sounding amp.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone. But I honestly think that anyone with a developed ear for tone will recognize this speaker to be the jewell it is designed to be.

Oh yeah!!!

It took all of 2 minutes to hear tone that I have been looking for on my Ghia 110...Put in a jan nos 12ax7 in v1 as well...tone to da bone...thanks riley for all!...again.

NICE

By Craig from Pennsylvania on October 7, 2018 Music Background: Retired musician/ home studio recording

I installed this speaker in a "65 Princeton Reverb. Immediately a significant difference. Smooth tone across all kinds of playing. 40 watt gold provides loads of headroom in a 15 watt amp. Definitely liking this speaker as break in time will get better. A great investment in my favorite amp. Highly recommend this speaker. Order from Randy@ ext.1780.

Great upgrade

By Dave on March 26, 2018

I put 4 of these in a super reverb. I was told not to do so by many people. I somehow knew that they were wrong.

They were.

I could not stress on how much my Super Reberb has improved by taking the stock Jensen"s out and replacing them with the Golds.

The brittle highs are gone and now they are just smooth and harmonically rich. The low end flubby is gone and replaced with a tight and driving clear punch. These are expensive but if you are looking for great tone do yourself a favor.

I am a firm believer in the speakers ability to make or break your sound. The stock Jensen"s are good but not great. The golds are great. It may take about two hours of playing to start loosening them up and breaking them in.

Simply amazing!

Celestion G10 Gold

By Sweetwater Customer on June 3, 2017

I bought a Princeton Reverb that was gutted and re-wired with a hand wired Mojo Tone Princeton Reverb kit. It still had the stock speaker though. It wasn't bad tone, just flabby above 6. The gold delivered just what I wanted. I can crank it to 10, it sounds tight and it's not even broke in yet.

Golden for sure!

By bp from San Jose, CA USA on May 23, 2017 Music Background: Rockin' and gigging since the 60's

Got the Celestion G10 Gold about 6 months ago to put in my Fender SuperChamp X2. From the start it was an amazing difference. No more blatting bass from the stock speaker. Smooth and mellow tones from bass to treble and great distortion at just the right spots. Great with my Les Paul, Strat, and Taylor T5z. Rock, blues, and jazz all coming through with amazing clarity and tone. Beautiful chime and the perfect crystal clear Fender tones coming through. Now that its broken in its even more amazing. Can't recommend this combination enough. After hearing the tones coming out of this bad boy, I've already had several friends make the change too.

Quality-Tone

I put this speaker in my Silverface 1981 Fender Princeton Reverb and my search is now over. Incredible tone!

Smooth low end. Big sound.

By Tim from Alabama on April 2, 2017

Put this is a fender pro jr amp. (Had to remove the back plastic "bell housing" to get it to fit.)
This speaker made a huge difference in sound. Highly recommend to get better low end response out of a small amp.

Great Speaker

By Matt from Los Angeles on January 31, 2017 Music Background: Gigging Guitar Player

This is a fantastic speaker. It's like a 10" Alnico Blue that you can use without worrying about going over 15 watts.
I purchased one from Sweetwater for my 65 Princeton Reverb RI and it kills in this amp. Beats the pants of the Jensen P10Q reissue that came stock.
I think these are quite possibly the best Alnico based speakers currently in production.

Gold star rated

Since discovering the Celestion Gold of which I now have in my Vibrolux, Princeton, Blues Junior, and 65 Deluxe Reverb I have the tone I've been looking for. The clarity, punch, ability to get driven and hold each note, strum, power chord with a full bouquet of sound makes the Gold speaker worth the investment. I have honestly had people ce up to see my amp and the setting I use always commenting on the tone. I suppose I'm a Celestion snob now and super happy to say so. Highly recommend if your looking for a great sounding speaker

Gold Rush (continues)

By Art Martinez from California on September 4, 2016 Music Background: Hobbyist, Church contemporary and traditional worship, blues, 60-70's rock

Just purchased a set of Celestion Gold10's for my Vibrolux Reverb Reissue. Wasn't pleased with the tone coming out of the amp which was built in 2007. I had purchased Celestion Golds in 12" and 10" sizes prior for my 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue, 68 Custom Princeton Reverb, Blues Junior and now the Vibrolux. I tried Eminence speakers such as the Legion 1058, Copperhead, the WGS and just couldn't get the tonal sound I was looking for as I have the Celestions Gold's. YES, they are pricier BUT why sell yourself short for a cheaper priced speaker. The speakers coupled with a new tranny and better caps/resistor mods by a reputable amp repairman friend of mine and all of my amps are incredibly beautiful now. I've also purchased a Celestion Heritage G12H for my VOX ac15c1 which I would highly recommend for this particular amp. I know everyone went to the Blue, but I wanted more head room before breakup and got it in the Heritage. Overall, I'm a purist when it comes to speakers and will stay loyal to the Celestions for the tonal quality and speaker quality I get for my money.

great speaker

By Justin Cavender from nitro, WV on April 25, 2016

these speakers are fantastic i bought two to replace some blown speakers in a 1973 super reverb. I was apprehensive about british speakers in an american amp but that went away when i strummed the first chord. these speakers are warm and very articulate and they have a very pleasing smooth top end.

True Gold

By Art Martinez from Orcutt on October 22, 2015 Music Background: Hobbyist / church worship / 60-70 rock / blues

After reading the reviews here on Sweetwater I decided to go with the recommendations and put the G10 in my Fender 68 Custom Princeton Reverb as I wasn't happy with the stock tone. While I haven't had the G10 long enough to allow for a good break in period I can already hear a wonderful difference as it allows me a bit more headroom and chime. I also put a 12AT7 preamp tube in the 3rd position after reading the common "dark" comments. Seems to have helped out my Princeton and I am finally getting to really enjoy it. I will likely put the G10 in my Fender Pro Junior as well. Well worth the money

Huge Difference

By Sweetwater Customer from Norman OK on February 26, 2015 Music Background: Guitar Player Over 30 Years,

I installed this in my 1964 Fender Princeton Reverb about a month ago and I have been loving it ever since. I was a bit hesitant at first because of the price, I'm notoriously stingy. However, any feelings I had about that immediately disappeared the moment I struck the first chord. The Celestion G10 Gold, 8 ohm speaker gave my amp the kick it needed. The sounds I get now fill the room more, giving it a more 3-dimensional character. The cleans are great and the reverb has never sounded better. From what I read online, some said this "British-voiced" speaker would ruin the true character of my amp. IMHO, they were wrong. It just sounds like a better Fender to me now. I should have gotten this speaker a long time ago!

Huge Upgrade

By Fly by Light from Atlanta, Georgia on July 3, 2014 Music Background: Part-time pro keyboardist and bassist

I replaced the stock speaker on my Fender Super Champ XD with one of these. The stock speaker is perfectly fine at low volumes, but breaks up in a bad way as you put on the gas. This upgrade was really a nice surprise. I can turn gain and volume to 10 with no degradation in the sound. Even with my cheap Strat, the clean sounds are very "present" and unmistakably "Fender". Every bit of the guitar's character comes out, and the ever-so-light boxiness of the stock speakers is gone. The modelled distortions are also clearer, with a nice "big" quality. My cheap little hybrid has morphed into a treasure.

The heart of the mod

By Paul Sarran from Santa Rosa, CA on November 20, 2013 Music Background: Live sound pro, bass player.

I got this for my 20 year old grandson to replace the wimpy 8" speaker in his Line 6 Spyder III that I got him. I had to do a bit of wood working to make it fit. Actually I completely made a mew panel, front-loaded and made an additional panel for the grille cloth. It turned out great and this speaker sounds phenomenal! Rich lows, creamy mids and clear sparkly highs. How did they get one speaker to do all that? Wow! It is well worth the price.
Note: the Line 6 loads a 4© speaker. This speaker is 8©, but it works fine.

Best speaker for Princeton Reverbs

By Sweetwater Customer from Atlanta, GA on March 27, 2013

I recently bought a Princeton Reverb from Sweetwater, mostly for the Celestion G10 Greenback it came with. Unfortunately for my preference, it was too similar to the normally stock Jensen speakers: bass heavy and dark. I would keep the bass at 1 with treble at 6 or 7 and the bass was still overpowering the mids and treble in my chords, even on my 12 string Strat. I bought this as a replacement and it has an amazing balance b/w bass and treble. It can deliver chime, surf sounds, bluesy grit, and anything mellow. At 40W it's a highly efficient speaker and if it were up to me these would be stock in every PRRI.

Simply stunning

By Kirk Lawler from Chicago on December 9, 2012 Music Background: Enthusiastic amateur

This speaker replaced the Rajin Cajun in my Fender Super Champ XD. The Eminence was a step up from the stock speaker, but the difference was not night and day. Playing through this Celestion, on the other hand, is like having a Klieg light shining on my practice space at four a.m. My goal in making this purchase was to convert the Super Champ into a super clean tube amp for playing light jazz; delivering high-fidelity and warmth while providing instant access to a battery of good quality DSP effects. Replacing the stock tubes with JJs and my no-name cables with Spectraflex Vintage Tweeds helped a lot but did not go the distance: the G10 Gold closed the gap and I am hearing EXACTLY the tone I was after. Finally... no more harsh trebles, honking mids and booming bass. I've always been ambivalent about the flatwound D'Addario Chromes on my hollowbody because strummed chords sounded lifeless. Now chords ring true and I no longer feel that I have to write around a handicap. The Celestion G10 Gold: priceless.

SUPERIOR TONE BEYOND EXPECTATIONS!!!!!!

By Sweetwater Customer from LA, CA on November 28, 2012 Music Background: Hobbyist

My 1x10 Black Shadow in my TransAtlantic cab just mysteriously died, so I bought this to replace it and man am I happy I did!!! Now I am hearing subtle details in the TA-15 head that I was never able to hear before. Chimes and clarity and crunch and creamy distortion are now present which had before been impossible to achieve. Those classic late 50's and 60's tones are only possible with this speaker! SPEND THE MONEY AND BUY ONE!!!!!!

Sounds Great in my '68 Custom Princeton Reverb

By Dale Hobbs from Macomb, MI on January 19, 2020 Music Background: semi-pro; both worship and blues/cover bands for years

Swapped this into my Fender '68 Custom Princeton Reverb, and have to say, the speaker sounds great. Very articulate and smooth sounding upgrade. I've actually swapped speakers in this amp a couple times, and this looks to be the keeper. This replaced an Emminence Rajun Cajun, (75 watt) which is a very fine speaker in itself. If you want more headroom, I highly recommend the Rajun' Cajun. Its very affordable, and sounds great as a replacement for the wimpy 20 watt Celestion this amp comes with. But the Gold just sounds fat in this amp. Very tight and clean at 3-4 on this amp. Pushed to 5, and the Princeton comes alive with this speaker.
Con's- a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. I had a gift card, and couldn't buy this quick enough.

And my sales engineer (Ian Angle) is excellent - takes the time to discuss the gear before the sale, and is always interested in my needs. Thanks Ian!

The sound of rock

By D on October 28, 2019

I blew speaker in a VHT special 6 and needed a replacement speaker. This thing took an amp that already sounded like a champ on steroids to a whole new level. Feels like it’s twice as loud as before and much warmer. Hit the amp with an overdrive pedal and it’s instant classic rock. Very dynamic and articulate and balanced tone. No ice pick highs nice tight bottom. It does have that British growl vs a more clean mid that my copper head has. Very impressed would buy again.

Celestion G10 Gold 10"

By Terry from Oklahoma on October 15, 2018 Music Background: 55 year old amatuer

First, let me say I really love my Fender Super Champ HD. It has great clean tones and is so convenient to move around the house. But... as expected, it struggled when cranked loud with some gain/pedals. So I swapped the standard 10" Jensen speaker (which is very good) with the Celestion and gave myself a much improved and thoroughly enjoyable little amp. After a few weeks of use now, I can honestly say I am blown away with the change! Still amazing cleans, but with so much more head room. No problems at 10 at all (holy %$#@!, this little thing can get loud!).

I was seriously considering upgrading to a Princeton Reverb/Custom, but I have ditched that thought right away. The Celestion is an expensive speaker for sure, but a worthy upgrade and a nice way to extend my budget and avoid bringing anymore amps into my house. Perhaps one day I will sell them all and really upgrade, but I will be happy with this set up for a long while.

FYI, I have some seen some folks wondering if the plastic magnet cover interferes with the tube cage protector. It's a snug fit, but no rubbing, no clearance issues at all.

A shout out to TJ Jackson for his great support at Sweetwater.

Chime for days

By Mike McWilliams from Louisville on July 14, 2017 Music Background: Blues and Jazz

I'm using this speaker alongside a WGS Retro 10 in a Custom Deluxe Vibrolux Reissue and the combination is just out standing. The Celestion is just a touch compressed allowing the WGS to sing through. Miles ahead from what Fender originally had in the amp, which was very lightweight Celestion Ten 30s. They are not piercing at all, just lots and lots of chime. Eventually, I'd like to try a pair in the Vibrolux, but for now, I'm satisfied

more tone...more everything

By james fox from kent, OH on March 23, 2017

My band mate suggested I get Celestian speakers to replace the Naylors that I have in my original black face super reverb, 1963. I asked why? He replied, more fun. Now I can cut through with less upping the knob on my volume control. The tone is distinct and the presence of the speakers is quite amazing. I am eager to hear it when the speakers are truly broken in...still a tad bit stiff. All in all amazing speakers! My bandmate was correct...more fun, indeed!

Smooth Fidelity

By Michael Brown from Fort Wayne, IN on December 30, 2014 Music Background: Songwriter, recording hobbyist

When you've been listening to music, insturments, amps and speakers as long as I have (40 years!) you know quality when you hear it. This is the real deal. The full spectrum of rich musical fidelity is reproduced by this great speaker. I slipped it into my 15 watt Fender Super Champ and the difference between the Celestion and the stock speaker was profound. It is rich and warm and authentic; giving me solid, biting crunch when I bore down on it with distortion, and winsome, wistful and delightful jangle when I threw some jazzy chords or clean arpeggios at it. It's a real delight to listen to my amp now at any volume level. The old speaker didn't cut it and sounded like a sick, papery, honking goose at high volumes. Now my amp sounds like it should. Very nice. Buy it! You won't be sorry.
