Not In My WILDEST Dreams!
I have a Fender Princeton Chorus SS amp that I bought in 1994, which I've always loved (for those in the know, the chorus on these is incred - along with the overdrive). The weakest part of this amp is that it's SS; there's not a tube in sight! I wanted to "warm" up the sound a bit, but apprehensive about swapping out the original Fender speakers. Ultimately, something had to be done. I read and read about different speakers, and after reading extensively about the Greenbacks, I decided to take a punt on a pair - and WOW! - hey are everything the reviews say they are (and in my case, more)! They are FULL, WARM and BALANCED! My amp sounds as close to "tubey" as you can get (in fact, I'd almost bet in a blindfold test one would think it's a tube)! I'd highly recommend doing you and your amp/cabinet a favor: Take the plunge and get Greenbacks! (For the record, I play a Fender Cyclone (with original pickups), and a fun and funky Agile Explorer.)
Great speaker for a Marshall Code 25 amp
In my opinion, the stock speaker in the Marshall Code 25 amp is not up to the task of that amplifier. I found the lows would come on loud and muddy compared to the mid-range and higher frequencies. But then, the higher frequencies were harsh and piercing. So, I switched out the stock speaker for this G10 Greenback and the difference is night and day.
The low frequencies are now clear, smooth and strong, the mid-range is crisp without being harsh, and the highs are bright and no longer feel like an ice pick in my ear.
If you're concerned about the power loss because the Celestion is 8 ohms vs the 4 ohm stock speaker, fear not, that Code 25 still has plenty of power to get loud with this G10 Greenback speaker.
If your practice amp is something other than a Code 25 and you find the sound to be rather cheap, it well could be that a Greenback would bring out the quality sound of that amp.
The shreik is gone!
I got this speaker to replace the stock speaker in my Roland Cube 30x as the stock speaker was worn out and sounding shrill and breaking up really bad on the treble.I went with the Greenback thinking it would be a nice fit as the Cube 30x has a modeling channel with some Brit settings that it might improve.I never really cared for the tones I was getting out of that channel and the Greenback did not really improve it much, but the JC Clean channel, which is what I always use on this amp has been much improved, the highs aren't distorting and the lows are sharper and overall, this speaker has delivered what I was hoping for, much improved.I am completely satisfied with this product and Sweetwater got it to me in a few days with no shipping fee. Thanks guys!
Celestion Greenback
I really love the sound and tone of the Celestion Greenbacks. They are in my Vox AC15 and I wanted to get that same sound from my Fender amp. This has got to be the best speaker I have used hands down. So glad I finally made the switch.
Great Tone!
I have a Dr.Z Carmen Ghia that had a Celestion 10" Gold in it. It sounded really, really good but it was LOUD. I needed a similar tone but minus a few dB. The Gold is 98dB, and the Greenback is 95, so a nice decrease of 3dB.
Tonewise the Greenback is a terrific match for the Ghia. It sounds huge in a small studio combo amp cab, and the bass response is clean, not muddy at all. As you crank the Carmen Ghia up the amp starts to get some serious growl and breaks into a sweet overdrive that the Greenback speaker pounds out with authority. And if I hit it with a heavy distortion pedal it sounds huge.
The G10 Greenback is one impressive speaker...I didn't think I was going to like it because I LOVE the tone of the Gold. But it is exactly what I needed and I recommend it.
New Speaker - New Amp
Replaced the stock speaker on my Marshall MG30GFX with this one. Sounds like an entirely different amp! Added a lot more depth to it.
Installed on 68 Custom Princeton Reverb
I recently bought a 68 Custom Princeton Reverb and thought it sounded good once the stock Celestion ten 30 broke in but i thought it was still missing something. I then bought the Celestion 10" Greenback for this amp and spent a couple of days breaking in the speaker. I have to say that my Princeton now has the "it" factor that it didn't have with the stock speaker. Where the bottom end would be inconsistent on the stock speaker, the Greenback's bottom end is tight, smooth and defined. As a result, i find myself dialing in a little more bottom end just because of how nice it sounds. I read reviews that the greenback will mellow out your highs, BUT in comparison to the speaker that the 68 Princeton already had, it's not much of a difference and you could always dial in a little more higher end if needed. I also noticed that the speaker has a hair more headroom and will take just a bit more to break up, which depending on your needs could be a good or bad thing. This is a quality speaker and i was not expecting the difference to be so noticeable but it was and i am one satisfied 68 Custom Princeton Reverb owner now this speaker installed in it. I rarely review anything, but i had to clear the misconception that this speaker does not improve the 68 custom reverb. It certainly does!!
Great 10" speaker classic Marshall sound
I'm glad I purchased this as an upgrade to my old Marshall Lead 12 practice Amp. I finally took the plunge after months of thinking about it. It breathed new life into my old Amp and gave it more volume, clarity, lows that aren't muddy, increased mids, and treble that isn't shrill at all. The speaker is very musical and gives you all those nice little harmonics, 'sustainy' sounds that you'd like to hear specially playing rock and noisy music like I do. The staff at Sweetwater were especially helpful and made the transaction as smooth as can be with the shipping being very fast and hassle free. Will definitely purchase from these guys again!
Clear and responsive
I'm using this with a Mesa Lonestar Special, an amp I've always loved but was tired of lugging around (60lbs). I've also always thought the Celestion Black Shadow was a little dark and muddy in the low end. I built a smaller lighter combo cabinet and dropped in the head and the G10 Greenback. I've completely fallen in love with this amp again and feel it sounds better with a clear, dynamic, responsive low end and rich, complex harmonics. It's also weighing in at 36 lbs now! (the G10 weighs 3.5lbs compared to the 9lbs of the Black Shadow).
Green Gem
The G10 Greenback put the fire back in my 3 Monkeys Sock Monkey. Luv the sound - boldness with clarity. Hail to the speaker gods for this green gem.
Green back celestion
Just got this green back it is a monster Love it Makes a so so amp sound awesome
Best investment EVER
I have had a used Marshall lead 20 amp for ever and it"s always sounded kinda off Compared to playing one in the stores. Found out my speaker is not the original
Full range in small package
I put this in a ported 2 cubic foot closed back cabinet that i had from a subwoofer project. It brought the midrange out and settled the lows in keepong with the British sound. I powered with a micro terror and the sound is full and loud.
Great service
Received phone call after ordering great follow up. arrived promptly in excellent shape. Sound great in my heavily modded hot rod deville 410 mixed two Greenbacks with two Jensen p10r what a sound.speakers work great together
Just what the Doctor ordered
I had been contemplating getting a tube amp and hanging up my mid 2000's Vox AD30VT Valvetronix amp. It's a pretty decent amp but it just lacked warmth and articulation. I really wanted a full tube amp and not just a hybrid. After reviewing prices of new tube amps, I decided to try the upgrade path to first.
I decided on getting the G10 Greenback and also upgrading the single stock 12AX7A power amp tube with a Mesa/Boogie 12AX7A. Man, what a difference! I know the speaker isn't even broken in yet and I did also change out a tube in the process, but the sound difference was immediate! Amazing clarity and warmth compared to the no name stock speaker. All aspects of the tone were enhanced and smoothed out. It used to sound slightly hollow where now it has a big sound.
This speaker was originally on backorder but shipped immediately upon arrival. Jared Madigan, my sales engineer, kept me informed along the way. Sweetwater, as always, prepared the packaging as if it was getting it ready for a moon landing.

It is exactly what you expect ... plus more
I have this speaker in 2 of my amps, Fender '65 Super Reverb reissue, Vox AC10c & now in my beloved '66 Vintage Fender Princeton Reverb. No flabby lows and all the mid-range & treble the amp can give. You WILL NOT be disappointed by these speakers.
Tim Salter Guitar Extraordinaire
I put two of these in a 2x10" Closed back Tremolux style extension cabinet. The Cabinet is powered by a Custom Vibrolux Reverb which is Open back and has 2x10" Jensens.
I plug my Gold Top Les Paul with P-90's straight in. Incredible Tone!
Works for me.
Got two in the mail today, installed them in an old amp, a Peavey Transfex, a solid state tube simulator. Replace the two 12" heavy speakers with two 10". The sound is great, I get to keep my stereo effects, the weight is a lot lighter, which was the only downfall that I had with the original amp. Plugged in my Les Paul and total Sweetness. Can't wait to take it out and turn it loose. Thanks Sweetwater.
Fantastic!!!
Great sounding speaker. Got two of these babies as replacements in an map. So much definition, tight bottom and focused mids. Probably the best 10 inch speaker I've used in 25+ years of playing guitar.
Fantastic Speaker Upgrade!
I put this in the new 68 Princeton Reissue amp and holy cow what an improvement. The low end and depth are dramatically improved. Improved headroom too. Compared side by side with the stock speaker, I feel Fender is doing a huge disservice to this amp by not shipping it with a Greenback as stock. I can't tell you enough on what a HUGE improvement it is!!!!! And of course, Sweetwater provides the best customer service around!!
Celestion 10" Greeback G10 into a Fender DeVille 410
We have a number of Fender amps that have had speaker upgrades. I have two Hot Rod Deluxes with Creambacks, and a couple of Blues Jr.s, one with a Cannibis Rex, and the other with a Greenback, plus I have a Super Champ x2 with a 10" Greenback, so I was familiar with the tonal qualities of a Greenback and what it adds or brings out in an amp. My youngest son is playing in a band here in SoCal through a 410 Fender Deville, which is basically a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with a different speaker configuration. The standard Fender speakers were somewhat lackluster in that particular amp config. So I bought a couple of 10" green backs and put them in an X config with two of the existing speakers. The amp basically woke up. It now has some personality to it. There is a distinctive tone that lifted the sound of his guitar out of the mix in a good way. The other guitar player was going for a darker tone, and although the mids are more defined with the greenbacks, it also sweetened the high end. My son plays a Corona built strat through this combo and it has a very authentic classic tone when he wants it, and is a great pedal platform for their shoe-gazing stuff.
Great Speaker
I replaced the Jenson speaker in my '65 Reissue Princeton Reverb. Really blown away by the improvement. Much richer tone coming out of the amp. I highly recommend.
Great
We'll I upgraded my fender frontman 25r amp with this greenback , the orig. speaker that came with the fender amp that distortion was much better than the greenback , BUT the sound of the greenback is much clearer and so much bigger , you can hear the low ends so nicely , I love the greenback 110% but I love the orig speaker too , if
I didn't have a choice I would pick the greenback for sure though
Not for Solid State Amps
I have just recently swapped out speakers in two Fender Solid State Amp combos with high price Celestion speakers: one being the
G10 in a Fender 1X10 combo unit. I would highly recommend not doing this, as the G10 comes across as
muddy and requires more drive to bring it out. You also lose the crack of the stock Fender 10" speaker. This was only a
test to see what I would get, and the G10 always has a home in one of my tube combos.
When trying to find information on replacement speakers, it seems all you get is glowing reviews of how good the high price speaker sounds, and NEVER a dissenting view which gets to be very frustrating if you are just looking to upgrade the cab a little.
With this said, I hope this NOT SO GLOWING review can help someone else out there thinking of upgrading his 1X10 Sold State Combo.
Yes, it's a little muddy
I compared both the standard Fender speaker (made by Eminence) and this G10, and the difference is huge. Anyhow, I can't tell you the G10 is an improvement over the stock speaker. In my Super Champ X2, the G10 sounds full bodied, but muddy, laking of shine. There is now way to restore the single coils sparkle by tweaking the eq.
It looks like the G10 can withstand the loud overdrive beat with a little more stamina than the Fender one, but if you are in the clean, glistening side, you may not like the G10.
In the deep side of matters, the bass in the G10 is very full and round. The mids sound hi mid rolled down and kinda vintage.
