Featuring two independent preamp circuits in each of its two channels, Slate Pro Audio's Fox QuadTone Microphone Preamplifier gives you four distinct mic preamp sounds. The Fox QuadTone's Vintage circuit serves up the sound of a classic 1073-style Class A preamp: fat, punchy, warm, and packed with juicy harmonics. You don't understand... Yet.

This is really impressive. I'll save the dissertation and just say may favorite things about this box are how much it improves workflow (incredibly convenient to switch between the preamps/combos to find the best for the sound source), and the sound quality is just top notch. Excellent clarity in the modern settings, beautiful enhancing color in the vintage mode, without clouding notes at all. Generally I'm not an advocate of "do it all" units as they usually do everything just OK and nothing exceptionally, but I'm eating my early assumptions about this unit - it has been in my rack for about a year now and is a pleasure to use every time... And it does get used every session!

What Does The Fox Say?

...Whatever it is, it sounds fantastic! Quick and easy to dial in a fantastic tone. Plenty of gain for most mics, and all the features you need from a pro level preamp. Did half of the vocals on a duo project using a vintage 1073 and Maag...the other half using this guy (in vintage/combo and modern/normal modes). EVERYONE is happier with the tones we got from the Slate. I'm just blown away by the level of quality and value packed into this piece. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone I know needing a versatile piece.

Incredibly Versatile!

This is an incredible preamp! I've owned a 1073 DPA and the Vintage Mode on the Slate Fox nails it! My favorite mode is the Vintage Combo, sounds incredible on vocals. I use the Modern setting a lot for tracking acoustic guitar or drums. Also, this has to be the heaviest preamp I have ever picked up. They really pack a lot into this design.

This is the real deal ! Not a bad sound in it and there are definite choices one can make according to the assignment at hand. Using it for direct input for bass you can make it big, round, clean and present or warm and dark using the vintage selector. I recorded slide gtr through an Orange Tiny Terror using mid-side mics, an FET condenser for mid into the Fox vintage normal, and an active ribbon for side into the Fox modern combo and cranked the input to about the 4th detent and output at unity (wide open). I gotta say the results are STUNNING ! The Fox on drum overheads (and on anything else) is a joyous event. That is if you like your your tracks to behave in a fashion where they need little or no further treatment.

Sweetwater Advice

Mike Kenway

The Fox may be the most versatile microphone preamp I've ever used. It lets me dial in the perfect vocal or drum sound on the way in, making it so much easier to mix later on. From warm and dirty to crisp and clear, and everywhere in between, this is one piece of gear that my studio will never again be without.

The Slate Pro Audio Fox is a brilliant idea that has been really well executed. Not just one or two, but FOUR very distinct (and very usable) microphone preamp 'colors' to choose from on each of the two independant channels of this unit. Ranging from the pristine clean sound that reminds me of Grace or Millenia preamps, to the fat warm sounds of a Neve front-end, with two extra variations that combine these two characteristics in different order. Instrument inputs on the front panel complete the well thought out facilities on this twin mic pre. I'm not sure why no one else has thought of this before, but Slate Pro Audio have got a winner with the Fox!

Following their impressive Dragon compressor, Slate Pro Audio has made an incredibly flexible, all in one solution for those looking for a wide variety of mic pre sounds, without breaking the bank! The Fox has completely independent preamp circuits in it for classic and modern tones, but the real magic comes from the ability to blend the warmer Neve-inspired "Vintage" channel input through the pristine "Modern" preamp output to come up with an incredible-sounding blend (my personal favorite), or vice versa. The Slate Pro Audio Fox truly is an absolute must-have for any studio looking to expand their tonal palette.

Looking for powerful and versatile hardware for your studio? Want it to sound incredible? You need to check out the new Dragon and Fox from Slate Pro Audio! Famed as the man behind the incredible Steven Slate Drums, Virtual Console, Trigger, and other software, Steven Slate is also a recording engineer and producer with many years of high-profile experience, and now he's put all that experience to work designing the hardware he needs for his use in the studio -- and you can have the same gear. First up is the Dragon, a single-channel FET compressor/limiter. The Dragon takes the classic compressor circuit from the '60s and '70s and enhances it to mastering-grade specs. Then a variety of settings are provided for optimizing your tone, including Vintage, Sheen, and Bite. The Saturate control lets you add just the right amount of grit, distortion, and harmonic content to the sound. To balance it all, there's the Mix control, which can give you everything from full-on compression to subtle parallel compression effects. Additional features such as the highpass filter on the sidechain allow you to tailor the response even more. The Dragon just may be the most versatile compressor ever created! If your hardware needs fall a little earlier in the signal path, say, right at the beginning, then the Fox 2-channel microphone preamp is just what you want. As does the Dragon, the Fox provides incredible versatility. We're talking four distinct mic preamps in one box! From legendary vintage 1073 tones to fast, clean modern tones -- plus two "combo" modes that combine those two extremes -- the Fox can cover everything from vocals to pristine acoustic instruments to banging drums. Of course, you have all the standard controls for phase invert, phantom power, and more, including instrument-level inputs. With the Fox and the Dragon, Slate Pro Audio has introduced two amazing hardware studio gems that will find tons of use in your studio. Call your Sales Engineer for complete information!
