Wampler Faux Tape Echo V2 Delay Pedal Reviews

Tape Echo Guitar Pedal with Wow and Flutter Emulation and Controls for Depth, Rate, Tone, Repeats, Delay Mix, and Delay, and Tap Tempo Switch

The Wampler Faux Tape Echo V2 proves there's nothing like tape delay. On guitar, many digital delays sound sterile, cold, and lifeless. The Faux Tape Echo, on the other hand, gives your guitar the warmth and character found in vintage tape echo units, with the consistency and reliability of a modern digital effect. This hybrid pedal features a digital delay chip that's married with an all-analog signal path. If you want the undeniably characteristic tone of analog delay, with the performance convenience that tap tempo allows, pick up the Wampler Faux Tape Echo V2 from Sweetwater today.

The right sound

By JMG on April 11, 2023

After watching endless you tube video demonstrations, buying (and selling) a couple of delay/echo pedals... some really complicated and some really simple, I found this pedal.
For me, this pedal is really easy to use to dial-in the sound(s) that I'm looking for. The sub-division button is a game changer for flipping through various echo patterns easily.
This Wampler pedal has the right echo/delay sounds for me and being easy to use makes it a big win.

Wampler Makes It Look Easy

By R W from NC on March 6, 2023 Music Background: 45 Years Experience

I have fairly simple needs when it comes to delay. Some short, tight delay for rhythyms and some slightly longer, single delay for soloing. Should be easy finding a pedal that can do this simple job, right? Well... I tried some very well known delays that couldn't do it, or at least they couldn't do it very well. They sound nice clean with soft delay but I turn up the mix knob they make too much noise and still get washed out under heavy distortion.
The Wampler is relatively quiet and the repeats are well pronounced with heavy overdrive. There... was that so hard? Apparently it is. Brian Wampler just knows how to make pedals that sound good.

Great Pedal

Sounds great.

Just ORDERED this on the comments alone!

By Neal Williams from Oil City, PA on February 13, 2021 Music Background: Professional rock star... HA, just kidding... I'm Joe Average...

So, who is crazy enough to review a pedal they just ordered? I am! My wife called this to my attention this afternoon and said you NEED to watch this video and check out this pedal. The video gives lots of detail and all of the reviews have been stellar. Sometimes you just KNOW when a product is going to be what you need (or want). I have made many purchases here at Sweetwater, and my salesperson. Andy Miller, has always done right by me. He has LISTENED to me, and has given me great advice on products (not just the pros, but the cons as well) That is why I keep buying from Sweetwater. I have a nice Ernie Ball Ambient Delay that I really like, but it isn't as user friendly as this pedal appears to be. I really like the way the controls are ON TOP and clearly visible. Also, this pedal is made RIGHT HERE IN THE USA! That was just icing on the cake. Thank you for all of your reviews after seeing the video. It made it easy to hit PURCHASE!

Wampler Tape Echo - a home run

By Joe Scott from Chicago on January 25, 2021

This unit is perfect for me. It's well built, quiet, straight forward and easy to use. In no time, I was able to dial in the vintage tape echo like sound I was looking for.

Inspiring Delay

By Eric from Illinois on May 11, 2018 Music Background: (25 years) Original and Cover projects, (10 years) Worship Leader

Wampler has created a fantastic version of a faux tape delay. The versatile features alone get the 5 star rating. This can be anything from a great kick on delay for sweetening a solo to a great always on blended in delay.

The Tap Tempo mixed in with the rhythm control("subdivisions") is one of my favorite features on this pedal; it easily/quickly lets you have so many options to work with.
The depth gets a little crazy past the 12 o'clock zone, but dial it just right (with faster bpm), and you get an interesting chorus or pitch shift like effect.
The Repeats full up will give you a really fun lo-fi overlap if you let it keep going, that could be fun in more artistic/ambient music settings.
Tone, I am a big fan of being able to have a bit of control over that on any pedal.

Overall I am very happy with the purchase, I used a real tape delay in studio for a recording I did for an original project out of STL years back, and this really captures the tone and feel off that recording. Having loads of fun and inspiration with this addition to my pedalboard.

Fantastic Pedal

By Bryan Sutherland from APO, AE on September 23, 2017

Replaced a Carbon Copy delay pedal with this one, and I'm completely satisfied. Not saying the Carbon Copy is a bad pedal, but Wampler's Tape Echo V2 is just that much better to me. Definitely still in the honeymoon phase and learning all of the nuances of this pedal. Very versatile, and very easy to dial in. Sweetwater's customer service is top notch.

I use every Sunday at Church. This is amazing!

My favourite pedal

By Gary Mack from Clinton Twp, MI on September 6, 2017

I love the sound of this pedal. They don't include the typical recommended settings in the box, but they have some on the website. Great sounding tape delay, I typically prefer subtle effects and the mix button allows you dial in the amount you want. Whether adding some country feel or airy ambience to a clean tone or enhancing distorted leads, I am very happy with both the build and sound quality. Nice job Wampler.

Essential Pedal

By CD Thompson on June 9, 2017

This Wampler Faux Tape Echo Delay Version 2 is pulling double duty on my pedal board as I'm using it as an always on pedal to accentuate my tone with an instant repeat that really sounds great and with the modulation settings it gives the impression of reverb. I have always used a reverb pedal or the amps built in reverb tank but with this Wampler Effect I don't need to as I have it all right here in one wonderful purple pedal.

One word - STUNNING!

By Jerry from Kansas on February 13, 2017 Music Background: Everything but the kitchen sink...

During my most recent bout of G.A.S., it dawned on me that tape echo had actually been the missing element from my tone. Time to buckle on the armor and sally forth to research the endless array of tape echo or tape echo emulation available to me!

It didn't take long to eliminate actual tape echo units. Yes, they sound gorgeous, but I am far too lazy to keep up with the maintenance required and too cheap to fork over the greenbacks. This left me looking at a relatively narrow field of candidates in the tone and price range I can entertain. Once again, into the research fray to find my Dulcinea in a field of windmills. The last two standing, you ask?

The fabled (and rightly so) Strymon El Capistan and the Wampler Faux Tape Echo!

I've been a Wampler fan for some time, so, after some discussion with Dustin at Sweetwater, I ended my research, took a leap of faith, and landed squarely in tonal heaven!!!!

I've only had this for a week, so it has not yet been fully explored, but I can tell you that I have yet to find a setting that is less than beautiful. The time division and tap tempo give me control far more exacting than I could have hoped for and the Rate/Depth (essentially modulation to simulate tape or capstan aging) are amazing. The echo tails are clean, reproducing tape tails in such a way that you would swear that you actually had an EP-3 in your chain.

Wampler hit this one out of the park. Sweetwater, as always, made the purchase a joy. My G.A.S. is well sated.

Do not hesitate to pick one of these bad boys up if tape echo is your thing (and it should be...)

Premium Tape Echo Pedal

By Burkhard from Flo Panhandle on January 28, 2017 Music Background: 30 years+ strings, keys and reeds

This Wampler Faux TE V2 is GROSS. Some outstanding details:
- Package and design: this pedal comes in a soft bag, so it's easy to keep it protected whilst carrying it around. And the colorful design of this Wampler is a true eye-catcher.
- Functionality: this pedal shows excellent and sturdy craftmanship. Its handy haptic gives it a firm stand on floors even when connected with other pedals in the middle of a cable chain. Its time subdivision function works GREAT. The tone knob works also great for me (amplified harmonica player), so when it's dialed to the far left position, the echo repeats sound lush (as desired), and not dull. Wow and Flutter (Rate and Depth) are nice add ons and they do their job as expected. Creating some really nice swaying echo trails is no big deal at all with this pedal.
I compared the Wampler with my Strymon El Capistan which has lost a bit of its value to me due to recent problems with some power supply instability (mine went off several times, however the cause is found now). The Wampler looks like to be not that sensitive about which adapter brand it prefers to get its power supplied. A true winner in this aspect too.
Soundwise, the Wampler Faux Tape Echo V2 comes up to very expectation of mine: from punchy slap backs to compact echo trail lines.

Last but not least, a big Thank You to the folks at SW who always provide their best to find the most appropriate solution for my music gear inquiries. Much appreciated!

Amazing pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on December 11, 2016

Amazing pedal! I spent a while searching for a good delay with tap tempo and had mixed feelings about each and every one of them. This one came out a few weeks ago. I saw a few demos and reviews and got that feeling you get when you find what you've been looking for. Honestly, I'm glad I bought this. Beautiful sound, looks classy, easy to use, and a really sturdy great quality build.

V2

By JOHN HAUGH from Grove city, PA. on December 6, 2016 Music Background: Played on a church warship group 2 tours to Sweden norway Denmark now I'm just a bedroom player .

I AB v2 with the very last one made which I currently own . I like that v2 trail offs sound clear with out the trail offs sounding like breaking up I feel both are great pedals.,but the staff at Pianos n stuff agreed on the v2 shining more so than my current one. Mine was a tad darker sounding in a good way but the clarity of the v2 sold me as the staff.I'm trading in mine for the v2 and the quaternary eighth . Eigth etc nice feature. The clarity of the echo trail off is what won me over.nice Work Brian and staff.

Making Me a Believer!

By Silvercrow from Bucks County Pa. on February 6, 2018 Music Background: Semi-pro, 40+ years

While I have decades of experience playing guitars, amplifiers, performing, I'm admittedly not much of a delay person. Playing in my church Worship band got me into delay in a bigger way than I have ever been, and while it was darned near necessary for me to get one with 'features' I did not want to sacrifice tone in order to be able to get tap tempo, note sub divisions, etc. Also, I was NOT going to spend $400-600 on a delay pedal.

So I tried some. I found the analog delays to be the warmest, most musical sounding, but at certain price points, features aforementioned weren't there. I tried a simulated 'tape delay' from a respected boutique maker and while it was technically good, it sounded very un-musical and 'metallic' to my ears.

It came down to a couple in this price range and since one of the two wasn't available right away, I chose the Wampler. I'm GLAD I did! It's got digital technology which provides features and precise settings, but an analog signal path which gives it warmth and musicality.

I've used it twice in live settings at church and spent some hours with it at home rehearsing and also composing original music. No bull, this pedal and I will get on just fine! Lots of possibilities without being overwhelming and a natural sound- lots to like without spending a ton of money.

Get one you won't be disappointed!

ALSO- my sales guy Ed Nystrom is a great person! VERY patient with me and facilitated a return when one of my selections didn't operate properly; then my ordering the WRONG replacement pedal added confusion to the entire situation. Ed is a level guy who just wants you to be pleased with the products you purchase. Thanks Ed and Sweetwater!
