Sweetwater Advice

  • Tyler Berggren

If I was only allowed to use one bundle of plug-ins for every mix I ever do from now until forever, this would be it. The SoundToys Native Effects bundle in combination with the stock plug-ins in any DAW would be enough for me to mix with. Decapitator ALONE is worth the price of admission here. Personally, Decapitator lives on the first insert of nearly every track in my mix. Using the Mix and Tone controls, I can quickly add color and shape to all of my tracks. Echoboy is my go-to delay plugin and I have it planted on two separate aux busses on every session I do, one for slap delay and one for a more extreme echo setting. Crystallizer, FilterFreak, and PhaseMistress can all take a boring track and turn it into something way more interesting. PanMan and Tremolator are life savers that let me easily create dynamic movement within a mix without having to spend days drawing in automation parameter changes. All in all, this is THE "desert island" plug-in collection for me!

Never Knew What I was missing

I originally only intended on purchasing the Decapitator but when I downloaded the demo bundle I immediately found use for several of the soundtoys. The echoboy is something to have in your arsenal for short to long ping pong delays. Very clean and majestic sounding but you can dirty it up a bit if you want. FilterFreak is great for notching and effects. Another Sweetwater purchase I'm glad to have made.

    The Possibilities

I've actually put away my hardware effects. Well, not totally because of Soundtoys, but Soundtoys has a big role in that decision. I'm reaching for one of the plugins often for landscaping ideas, rhythm ideas, doubling ideas, and just all kinds of things I always wondered how to do but didn't have the know how with my tools. Soundtoys have simplified the way for me to achieve a lot of the sounds in my head. Can't wait till v5 comes out so I can have MicroShift. Good job Soundtoys.

    Hip Hop necessity

These things are a absolute need in hip hop production.
Lets check the bundle shall we

Decapitator-from kicks to snares this thing brings the pain with a few knob turns you go from having wack drum samples that you bought off some cheap website to having banging drums that you tweaked yourself.

Crystalizer- yeah we can chop and screw with this plug right here and add some spice on top of it.

Filterfreak- filter them samples you just chopped son put some spice at the end of that loop with a crazy filter transition, put a dope filtered bridge in ya tracks, and the list goes on.

Echoboy- lets you add some sweetness to them adlibs or put that right drag on that snare, or make a dramatic transition to the hook.

Tremalator- that pad sample sounds boring well do something about it drop tremalator on it and watch it come alive.

    Phasemistress- i dont use much

But dont forget to grab devil loc while youre at it that thing is a monster on any drum sound you put it on.

These plugs dont have a huge learning curve and they sound great while being easy to use plus they come with a lot of presets.

If you doing Hip Hop production do yourself a favor and get theses plugs period.

All in one effects package for all your post-pro needs

I've seen this plugins used for years and never got to really delve into the heart of these things until my latest project. I used them at the tracking studio and when I got my sessions home I realized I HAD to buy these to achieve the sound I envisioned. I'll be forever grateful I took the plunge for these. 100% recommended.

First off, the decapitator is wonderful. Made drums sound analog. Then the other FX in the bundle are full of interesting sonic ideas. Great for sound design and scoring as well as music.

    These plugs are dope, Yo!!

Yo, this review is for my boy.

These plug are dope, Yo!! Soundtoys takes the crazy out of gear and implements that logic into their plug ins. You could get by with this collection as your defacto set of plug ins. Granted that you use the effects in your daw as secondary. But that's besides the point. These plug ins are dope, because you can do things that no other plugs can do. Like turn monkey sounds into space monkeys. I highly sugest that you take a stroll on soudtoys.com and check out their previews. They're kind of flakey in Live. This is why I rate them a 4.5. But they still work. But they're kind of flakey/.

One of the best effects bundles available for download

These are extremely musical and creative effects. Only a couple other bundles like Uhbik and the Audio Damage line can get near the quality and ease-of-use of these plug-ins. PhaseMistress, Tremolator, and now PanMan are awesome on static pad sounds. Crystallizer is awesome on slower drum and percussion loops. And EchoBoy is probably the most feature-laden delay out there. Two things keep this from being a 5-star product - You must have an ilok to use them and they are slightly more CPU-heavy than "comparable" plug-ins.

Also, 99% the presets are for insert use. If you want to use them as sends, you'll have to manually set them for 100% wet. A small complaint, but it would still be nice to scroll through and demo EchoBoy presets that are "send-ready."
