Active EMG 89 pickups deliver impressive versatility

The ESP E-II FRX FM is armed with a pair of Alnico V EMG 89 active humbuckers, which pull double duty as both single- and dual-coil pickups. In single-coil mode, you get classic, chimey spank and sparkle similar to EMG's SA model. As a dual-coil, it delivers warm, powerful tone reminiscent of the popular EMG 85. You use the E-II FRX FM's push/push pots to switch between single-coil and humbucking modes. With two of these beasts onboard the E-II FRX FM, you get tons of genre-hopping tonal versatility.

Amazing Guitar

This guitar was not on my radar due to the price. I was looking at an Ibanez guitar that was about half the price of this. My wife (who knows very little about guitars) saw this ESP E-II FRX in Rainbow Blue in one of the Sweetwater catalogs and loved the way it looked. She ordered it for me for Fathers Day.When it arrived, it was in beautiful condition, but the color was more purple than blue. But that is a good thing because I prefer the purple. The fretboard is so smooth, it is easy to rip through lead licks and it sounds great. Some people replace the EMG pickups but I really like the sound for hard rock and heavy metal. The bridge pickup can produce excellent tones for lead and I usually use both pickups for rhythm. The tone control provides a very wide range of tones. Also the 3-way switch is in a very easy to access location. I own 4 electric guitars and this is definitely my favorite.I agree with everything the other person who reviewed said, for example the battery access is very convenient. With the style of music I play, I haven't had much need for the single coil pickup switches. I pretty much use humbuckers. This guitar is NOT just a PRETTY TOY. It is an excellent well made guitar and worth the price. The looks are a very nice bonus. I have nothing bad to say about it but I'm not used to playing such an expensive piece of equipment.

What's not to like?

Killer looks: the style is unique and the finish looks just as good if not better in personSmooth/Fast neck: feels like it was designed specifically for your handsIncredibly versatile pickups: switching between humbuckers and single coils is always a nice bonus. can easily dial in any tone you want. Not just for metal!Quick battery access: just push to open the pickup battery compartment. No screwing necessary (...sounds minor, but that sort of thing is an unnecessary annoyance)Legit Whammy Bar: this isn't the kind that everyone cries about and turns away from Floyds forever. It's an Original Floyd, stays perfectly in tune, and isn't a pain to deal withComes with a case AND strap locks: not even sure why any guitar wouldn't come with these by defaultI originally got this because I wanted something "different" to play with--I tend to prefer semi-hollowbody guitars--but honestly it's one of the best playing guitars I've ever touched. It's incredibly well balanced, sounds good, looks good, has a ton of great features, and just kicks ass.
