Keeps the Life in Your Tracks

NOTE: This product requires an iLok (not included) for authorization. Please call your Sweetwater Sales Engineer if you have questions.

Mix engineers at Sweetwater know that too much compression and limiting will make your tracks sound harsh and wear out the listener's ears. That's why you need Slate Digital's FG-X. This plug-in bundle takes advantage of breakthrough DSP techniques to get your tracks pumping, without causing that lifeless, overly compressed sound. Using "Intelligent Transient Preservation" technology, Slate Digital's FG-X looks ahead at your mix and optimizes its response based on the transient coming up - it's not some one-size-fits-all compressor, it's custom-tailored to make your mix sound its best.

Slate Digital FG-X Mastering Plug-in Bundle at a Glance:
  • Use FG Level to enhance detail and punch
  • Use FG Dynamics for transparent dynamics optimization
Use FG Level to enhance detail and punch

Slate Digital's FG-X includes the FG Level maximization plug-in and the FG Dynamics compression plug-in. With Level, you can use the Transient knobs to fine-tune your mix transients. Use the"Launch" parameter to transparently increase your track's punch and dynamics, without unbalancing the mix. The Detail feature helps you add more clarity and focus - ideal for your buried kick or snare sounds. And after the Slate Digital Gain maximizer, you'll want to use the dynamic perception parameter to make your final master sound totally open and punchy. Last up, you can use the "ITP" slider to prevent unwanted distortions or crackles, so you won't get weird artifacts in your masters because a mix has small bursts of low-frequency energy here and there.

Use FG Dynamics for transparent dynamics optimization

What about the FG Dynamics compressor? Slate Digital recognizes that most top-level mastering engineers use very little compression, if any at all. They know that the mix engineer worked hard to get the right color across the mix, so why alter it? Instead, FG Dynamics aims to maintain that quality, offering up incredibly transparent compression that gives you just the right oomph.

Slate Digital FG-X Mastering Plug-in Bundle Features:
  • Includes FG Level and FG Comp plug-ins
  • Uses new "Intelligent Transient Preservation" technology
  • Aims to preserve the dynamic range and punch of tracks
  • Based on years of research analyzing saturation curves
  • FG Level is a maximization plug-in that gives you control over your mix
  • FG Comp is a compressor that's made to sound transparent
Make better masters with the Slate Digital FG-X plug-in bundle!

Not just for mastering

So this guy (like all Slate plugs) is kinda CPU intensive, so be sure you've got enough juice to run this. On my MBP Retina I can run about 8 instances of it no problem, but on my aging iMac i3, I can only get 2 max. But if you do have the power, use this as your main compressor for EVERY group you have. Stem it out if you have to, its worth it. Especially for vocals. A little goes a long way with this unit. The controls are extremely clean and even though its actually kind of hard to over-do it with this, you really feel the difference in small changes. Also turn off the metering when you don't need it, it helps a lot with CPU load. I've heard that Slate is working on bringing just the compressor section out as its own plugin... can't wait for that day to come! Its like the digital equivalent to a Grace.

This is the shape of things to come - here now!

Coming from an analog background as early as the '70s, the digital age has presented both great joy in creativity unbound and an extreme struggle to get warm, smooth sound without ugly digital artifacts. The loudness wars only increased that struggle... more so with plugins than hardware - but an issue either way (thank goodness people are starting to get back to dynamic masters). The FG-X is the FIRST plugin I have ever used that transcends the gap between analog & digital; producing compression, limiting and transient design that is pure pleasure to my ears. Whether mastering a mix or detailing a track (you should hear this thing on drums!), you'd have to go a long way to prove it's equal in OR out of the box. I could not imagine mastering without it. If I might add - the support I received from my Sales Engineer here at Sweetwater (Trent) getting this delivered and registered was top notch... like having a local music shop online. Thanks!

Digital mastering at it's best!

The most transparent mix bus compressor in plugin format that I have used. The amount of sheer volume you can get out of this bad boy is incredible. It gives my clients a great idea of what the mastered record will sound like. And a lot of clients are just havingme master their project now! The metering is an amazing tool, and the constant gain monitoring is super handy. If you are on the fence give this bad boy a try. You won't be sorry. Digital delivery is hassle free too! Enjoy.

A great tool!

It sounds great- the metering is just what I needed and I like the dynamic perception, low punch and high detail adjustments. I mostly do live recordings as I am a live mix engineer and this plug-in makes putting a polishing touch on my recordings quick and easy.

Sweetwater Advice

Scott Augustyniak

Slate Digital FG-X is a great mastering tool for the DAW user. The presets alone are usually enough to get that final touch to your mix.
