Awesome new features get you even closer to tube amp Nirvana

How do you improve on near-perfection? Well, that's always been the name of the game at Mesa/Boogie, hasn't it? Mesa's taken their (already amazing) Express 5:50 and injected even more perfection. The Express 5:50 Plus features an improved clean mode with warm, breathing lows, increased sparkle in its highs, and tweaked S/N. You now get Mesa's full-blown Multi-Watt channel-assignable power with Duo-Class and Dyna-Watt technologies, letting you run your power tubes in any of three different wattage ratings (5 watts, 25 watts, or 50 watts) per channel - each having its own tone-bending wiring configuration and operating class! Mesa's legendary 5-band graphic EQ is now along for the ride with additional controls that let you footswitch or auto-assign the EQ sliders or the preset control in each channel. Mesa's performance-juicing solo control is also onboard, giving you an additional footswitchable master output control that lets you preset your ideal amount of volume boost for solos and figures you wish to have additional emphasis - and trigger it on the fly. Lastly, a new 4-button footswitch gives you ready access to channels, reverb, EQ, and solo. Wow. Impressive updates - particularly for an amp many guitar players considered already perfect.

Great Boogie tube tones for all kinds of players

Wouldn't it be great to be able to use the same amazing-sounding amp for stadium gigs, club dates, and in the studio? Thanks to Mesa/Boogie, you can! The Express 5:50 Plus head features three completely different power configurations, spread across two fully independent channels. Are you a tonal traditionalist? Select clean and blues for your two footswitchable sounds. If you're addicted to gain, choose crunch and burn. Then stand back as the mild-mannered Dr. Jekyll morphs into the maniacal hardcore beast, Mr. Hyde. Most important is the classic authenticity of all these iconic tones. No matter what your stylistic destination, the Express 5:50 Plus will get you there - fast!

Choose your power section

Up front, that number 5 indicates the low power, single-ended magic of pure Class A. The 25 setting gives you medium Class A push-pull output that's ideal for club work. Got an arena gig? Move serious air with the Express 5:50 Plus's 50-watt Class A/B setting. This impressive tonal and volume flexibility is made possible by Mesa/Boogie's Duo-Class and Dyna-Watt technologies that deliver multiple wattages and both single-ended and push-pull configurations in the same amplifier. Very cool.

A tone-shaping, air-moving beast

Each channel of the Mesa/Boogie Express 5:50 Plus is further equipped with its own contour depth control for added shaping that's both assignable and footswitchable. Used subtly, contour adds a halo of depth and chime to gleaming clean sounds. Higher contour settings, especially in crunch and burn, take you into recto turf, which is tight, huge, and menacing. Don't be fooled by the compact size of the Express 5:50 Plus head - it's more than capable of the kind of volume that can keep up with a live band while providing the tonality, nuance, and flexibility you need in the studio.

Mesa/Boogie's high-gain heritage

Mesa/Boogie founder Randall Smith started out modding amps for Bay Area bands in the late 1960s. His clients? The heavies of the San Francisco scene - the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Big Brother, Santana, Steve Miller, Country Joe and the Fish, and many more. Randall's famous hot-rodded Fender Princetons from this era are the stuff of legend: how could a little 15-watt combo get so LOUD? Ever since Randall handbuilt the first Mark I amps in a Northern California mountain shack in in 1971, the name Mesa/Boogie has been a standard-setter in high-gain guitar amplification. Today, guitar greats such as Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola, John Petrucci, Andy Timmons, and Kirk Hammett use the distinctive, versatile voice of Boogie amplifiers to forge their signature sounds. And you can, too.

5:50Plus Black and Cream

Chris McCown and I talked about amps for about 6 months. He convinced me to try the 5:50 Plus. I bought the black and cream. The custom colors like this also come with chrome and black leather handle. I bought a Mesa Vertical 2x12.I have always played Marshall/Laney/Fender and/or Peavey. Until now, my most favorite map I have ever had was a mint JCM-800 with a 1960AV cabinet that I bought in the early 90s. I told Chris I wanted a workhorse do it all type amp. I wanted an amp where I could use pedals to just change the flavor but not needed to make the amp do what it is not intended to do. Playing metal thru a Fender Twin is a good way to drive your listeners away because of all the nasty buzz!I play blues and classic rock. I quickly settled in on the clean and blues channels. But when the mood strikes me, Crunch and Burn are killer! Country, modern rock, classic rock, punk, metal, blues, this will do it!Now to be perfectly honest, the Mesa tubes were a bit too metal tone for me. So I called Doug at Doug's Tubes and told him what I wanted. Wow!! Just the slight adjustment in tone I wanted!!!! No rolling needed!!This amp takes all types pedals well. Just pick the proper channel and nudge it with your pedal. The 5 and 25 watt Class A power settings have to be heard to be believed. The 5 watt singled ended is uber sweet! This is a Mesa Boogie. It is not one of the famous British amps, so don't try to run it like one. READ THE MANUAL!!! They give you some basic settings to start with. You need to start there unless you are well versed in Mesa Boogie. Even then, I'd still read the manual. If my amp was stolen, I'd call Chris and order another 5:50Plus!!

Like no other amp I've owned

This amp is extremely impressive. I've had mine for a little over a year and the tones that can be achieved are incredible. You would have to be in denial to say it wasn't a quality amp. So you know where I'm coming from, I currently own a peavey classic 50 (which I love) and a Marshall JCM 2000 with a 1960 B cab. Each is a different beast, but of the three the mesa wins on quality. The cleans are outstanding and the crunch can delivers beautiful creamy overtones like I've never before heard. I hate to critique because this really is an outstanding amp, but I have 2 complaints and it comes down to preference: 1) The sounds I love (clean and crunch) are on the same channel making it impossible to switch between the two while playing with a band - this really gets to me. 2) Is the volume dynamics. The amp is extremely sensitive and detailed insomuch that minor variations in the way you strike the strings will drastically change the overall volume - I'm talking by a factor of 4 times the volume. If you're the lead guitarist and have the luxury of giving all of your attention to tone you may love this, but if your the lead singer and your attention is spread this may become overly technical and distracting (note that the blues and burn channel has more compression helping to keep the volume more uniform). A compression pedal can help to mitigate this. Great amp.
