Awesome new features get you even closer to tube amp Nirvana

How do you improve on near-perfection? Well, that's always been the name of the game at Mesa/Boogie, hasn't it? Mesa's taken their Express 5:50 and injected even more perfection. The Express 5:50 Plus features an improved clean mode with warm, breathing lows, increased sparkle in its highs, and tweaked S/N. You now get Mesa's full-blown Multi-Watt channel-assignable power with Duo-Class and Dyna-Watt technologies, letting you run your power tubes in any of three different wattage ratings (5 watts, 25 watts, or 50 watts) per channel - each having its own tone-bending wiring configuration and operating class! Mesa's legendary 5-band graphic EQ is now along for the ride - with additional controls that let you footswitch or auto-assign the EQ sliders or the preset control in each channel. Mesa's performance-juicing solo control is also onboard, giving you an additional footswitchable master output control that lets you preset your ideal amount of volume boost for solos and figures you wish to have additional emphasis - and trigger it on the fly. Lastly, a new 4-button footswitch gives you ready access to channels, reverb, EQ, and solo. Wow. Impressive updates - particularly for an amp many guitar players considered already perfect.

Great Boogie tube tones for all kinds of players

Wouldn't it be great to be able to use the same amazing-sounding amp for stadium gigs, club dates, and in the studio? Thanks to Mesa/Boogie, you can! The Express 5:50 Plus combo features three completely different power configurations spread across two fully independent channels. Are you a tonal traditionalist? Select clean and blues for your two footswitchable sounds. If you're addicted to gain, choose crunch and burn. Then stand back as the mild-mannered Dr. Jekyll morphs into the maniacal hardcore beast, Mr. Hyde. Most important is the classic authenticity of all these iconic tones. No matter what your stylistic destination, the Express 5:50 Plus will get you there - fast!

Choose your power section

Up front, that number 5 indicates the low-power, single-ended magic of pure Class A. The 25 setting gives you medium Class A push-pull output that's ideal for club work. Got an arena gig? Move serious air with the Express 5:50 Plus's 50-watt Class A/B setting. This impressive tonal and volume flexibility is made possible by Mesa/Boogie's Duo-Class and Dyna-Watt technologies that deliver multiple wattages and both single-ended and push-pull configurations in the same amplifier. Very cool.

A tone-shaping, air-moving beast packed into a convenient combo

Each channel of the Mesa/Boogie Express 5:50 Plus is further equipped with its own contour depth control for added shaping that's both assignable and footswitchable. Used subtly, contour adds a halo of depth and chime to gleaming clean sounds. Higher contour settings, especially in crunch and burn, take you into recto turf, which is tight, huge, and menacing. Don't be fooled by the compact size of the Express 5:50 Plus combo - it's more than capable of the kind of volume that can keep up with a live band while providing the tonality, nuance, and flexibility you need in the studio.

Mesa/Boogie's high-gain heritage

Mesa/Boogie founder Randall Smith started out modding amps for Bay Area bands in the late 1960s. His clients? The heavies of the San Francisco scene - the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Big Brother, Santana, Steve Miller, Country Joe and the Fish, and many more. Randall's famous hot-rodded Fender Princetons from this era are the stuff of legend: how could a little 15-watt combo get so LOUD? Ever since Randall handbuilt the first Mark I amps in a Northern California mountain shack in in 1971, the name Mesa/Boogie has been a standard-setter in high-gain guitar amplification. Today, guitar greats such as Carlos Santana, Al Di Meola, John Petrucci, Andy Timmons, and Kirk Hammett use the distinctive, versatile voice of Boogie amplifiers to forge their signature sounds. And you can, too.

A thing of beauty

I've been playing the guitar for close to 20 years and have played a lot of amps. I love the sound of tube amps, but many lack versatility and are very difficult to practice with in a home setting. Mesa has created a truly beautiful amp with the 5:50 plus. I play a prs s2 through this and I couldn't ask for a better tone. I can get a lot of different sounds out of this set up to play any type of music from jazz to hard rock. The 5 watt setting is perfect for practicing at home. It's less than 50 lbs so it's easy to carry to gigs and the 50watts will get as loud as I need it to. If your looking for an amp that will do it all then you have found it. Sweetwater was great to work with. They had the amp to my front door in 2 days. Thanks Brad Thompson for a great buying experience. I'm still learning how to use this thing but so far I couldn't be happier.

Great Amp

This amp was added to my Mesa collection and purchased from Sweetwater. I purchased Mesa Roadster a few years back and received a TA-30 as a gift, both also purchased from Sweetwater. Let me say, fist off Sweetwater rocks! Knowledgable and friendly staff and customer service above all!Now for the amp review...This amp is outstanding in fit and finish. Got the wine with cream grille for a vintage look and quite impressed. Love the 5W and 25 W options so as to not blow away the house and neighbors. Great cleans and personally like the EQ feature. Favorite is channel 1 on crunch.

Fantastic Amp

This is simply the best amp I have ever owned or played. Fender has always been my first choice, not any longer. The clean channel on this amp on any setting is warm and full. I've always believed that a good clean channel is the most important thing on any amp. But I think my favorite setting is the crunch channel. Wow what a great tones come from this channel. Its the perfect classic rock sound. I've had the best Fender has to offer but none are as versatile as the Mesa Boogie Express 5:50. Its built to last forever and that's how long I plan to keep it.

Incredible Amp

This is my first Mesa amp. I have stuck with Fenders and Marshalls over the years, but my friends have all switched to Mesa Boogie over the years because of build quality and reliability, so I started reading up on them and spent months trying all kinds of Boogies. I recently had a Marshall 2061x hand wired - awesome amp. Also owned a 70's 100 watt JMP and an original Slash (Silver Jubilee). I have a Fender '63 Vibroverb Reissue that has been modified with Mercury Magnetics transformers and better caps. It has a Jensen 10" and a Celestion Vintage 10" in it. I had a Fender Bassman 100 watt head with a Marshall Celestion v30 loaded cab and both those amps have great sounds. And I've had a slew of other amps. So, with all that in mind, this Mesa Express Plus looks better than any of them, and it runs circles around the tones I can get from my Fender Vibroverb. It even nails that tone. I ran the speakers from the Vibroverb with the Express Plus and the Express Plus actually has richer harmonic content than the Vibroverb, which I expected. It has a Bassman like sound as well. It has 2 distinct clean tones - the Clean and the Blues channels, and the tones were really easy to dial in. I've played on a few Mark V combos and I'm not really into dialing around as much as it seems the Mark V requires. It has quite a lot of versatility, with the available wattage selections and the channel voicings. The reverb is way better than my Vibroverb. They shouldn't make the Express Plus amp in black. The sound that exudes from this amp doesn't go with a black shell. I will own, play and cherish this amp for the rest of my life.
