World Class Performance - Working Band's PRice

In addition to being a bassist and guitarist, I've almost always wound up being the "chief engineer" in the bands I get involved in (my day gig...Electronics Technician Specialist with a major R&D center). The the lead vocalist of my latest endevour came to me, he was ready to spend several thousand dollars on a wireless system. His criteria was that it had to be rock solid and had to sound great. I told him to relax...I got this.My search was narrowed to two companies, and after comparing the specs, features, and construction it was no contest. The Sennheiser EW 335 fit the bill at less than one fifth of what he was willing to pay.I got it in, racked it up, and powered on. Scanning for open frequencies was fast and easy. And I really liked the fact that you can program the mic behaviours and options on the receiver (taking advantage of the larger display) and then sync them to the mic. At rehearsal, the Sennheiser immediately sounded better than the high end wired mic he had been using. Better tone and far less feedback. But the proof would be how it held up at out debut show the following weekend.Let me just say problems and amazing sound. We were playing in a club with a 12' metal ceiling (bad RF environment), there were about 20 automated lights around us (with switching power supplies...worse RF environment) and 4 other wireless systems in operation on stage. Never a hiccup. Other companies can probably come close to the electronics performance, but Sennheiser still builds their products out of metal, not plastic. (I cringed when our singer dropped the mic when trying to twirl it, but it was none the worse for wear). And while it doesn't directly affect the performance, he was stoked when he saw I was able to put his name on the display. gotta love 'em.The only reason I gave 4.5 instead of 5 stars was because as far as I was concerned the rackmounting hardware was incomplete. I found out after I received the system that I still had to order cables to connect the antennae to the front panel. That delayed me a couple of days on delivery of the system. So, if you're going to rack mount the receiver be sure to order the AM2 kit as well. All in all, a great product. And the fact that Sweetwater doubled the warranty...all the better.
