Four Years Later, a Second Review

So I've had the Casino now for four years and have performed some key mods: I switched out the pots for a wider range tone on the neck pickup, and then dropped a Lollar gold foil for dogear route. I also needed to tweak the switch to eliminate some fuzzy mischief in the middle and bridge positions.

All of this to say I made the guitar mine. Keep in mind that these are fairly routine adjustments that any guitar could probably use (excepting the $200 pickup mod!). This has become my go to, every day, every gig guitar. Special loves: pushing an amp just slightly past breakup; also comping with rolled back tone. Single note lines can range from sparkle to grunge.

I should say that stock pickups in this are more than fine, but the gold foil makes this thing sound like a $5000 axe--except I'm not afraid of taking it out of the case. For the price point, this is just a great guitar.

    That sound I've been wanting

I have owned (or still own) Gibson, Fender, G&L, and Ibanez electric guitars. This is my first Epiphone electric and I glad I tried this hollow body. It just sounds great immediately. The fit and finish is great and the guitar plays like a dream. The tones I get out of this guitar right out of the box is amazing. It likes my Vox AC-15C1 which isn't true of all my guitars. I have been pleased with the Masterbuit acoustic series and I am tickled that the quality of this Casino is excellent.

    My favorite electric guitar

Paul McCartney once said that if he had to chose just one electric guitar, he would choose The Epiphone Casino and now that I own one, I can clearly see why. This is the most versatile guitar I have ever played and the sounds you can get from it are truly amazing. I defy anyone to find a better made guitar for under six hundred bucks; I feel that strongly about it. Sweetwater does a great job with the setup as well, unlike some other retailers who ship you a virtually unplayable instrument right out of the box. But this guitar, but it from Sweetwater, and you will be one happy guitarist!

    Epiphone Casino VS

I recently purchased an Epiphone Casino VS from Sweetwater and I am extremely happy with the guitar and Sweetwater.

Alex at Sweetwater was very helpful and knowledgeable when assisting me in the purchase. My Casino arrived on time as promised and I was impressed by the extra care and packaging Sweetwater used to insure that the guitar arrived safe and in perfect condition.

    Now the Guitar.

On inspection I was impressed by the overall quality of the guitar. It has the fit and feel of a more expensive instrument and I would compare it to the quality of many of the Gibson’s and other high end guitars I have owned. Out of the box the action and set up was good. The guitar’s neck needed no adjustment, the frets were perfectly polished and seated with no sharp corners or overhang and there was no string buzzing or dead spots down the length of the fretboard. The sunburst finish was evenly applied with no imperfections that I could find. The tuning keys offered accurate and smooth tuning with no string slippage. Unplugged the guitar had a nice even sound and plugged in the P90’s did not disappoint.

I chose the Casino for several reasons. First I wanted a lighter weight hollow body guitar. The natural resonance of this instrument provides a fuller more robust sound when amplified. The P90’s single coil pickups offer a more dynamic sound than the hum bucker style and provide more natural tones. I did own a Casino previously a 1995 model. (Which I regret ever selling.) However I feel this new reincarnation of the Casino model offers better quality then my 95. Also the new slim D neck profile and wider nut make this instrument even more playable.

The guitar came with D’Addario 10’s gauge strings on it, which are a little light for my taste. I changed them to D’Addario 11’s and lowered the action. I did have to tweak the intonation and truss rod a bit but after those small adjustments the guitar is a perfect fit for my style of playing.

I my opinion The Epiphone Casino is a great investment for any working musician who is looking for a quality and versatile instrument

    Epiphone Casino

I received my Epiphone Casino in the beautiful Vintage Sunburst finish recently and absolutely love it. I am a devoted Epiphone fan these days, and also own a Les Paul Tribute Plus, G-400 Pro SG and DR-500MCE acoustic electric. Those guitars are all high-quality instruments in their own right, but I have to say that the Casino is my favorite guitar of all the guitars in my "Epiphone family" now. In fact, of all the guitars I have owned over the years -- and there have been many -- the Casino is definitely my favorite. The build quality is excellent, as well as the fit and finish. The neck is silky smooth to play and has just the right profile for my small hands. What really shines with this guitar, though, are the P90 pickups. When played clean, you get a nice, unique tone that sparkles. Add just a bit of distortion, and you start to get that unique growl that can only be heard with P90 pickups. When played with full distortion, the guitar is sheer rock 'n' roll delight. There is no limit to the types of music you can play with this guitar. In fact, the Casino has to be one of the most versatile guitars I have ever played. As always, I am very pleased with the superior customer service I receive from Sweetwater. A special thanks to Mark Magdich, Chelsea Freistroffer and Aaron Cieslikowski for working together on my order. It is nice to see a company where its employees not only go out of their way to help their customers, but also have each other's backs.

Excellent jazz tones with great dynamics

The tone is made of the full hollow body coupled with fairly hot p90s. This combination delivers a wonderfully acoustic vibe with a bright, driving growl. It's incredibly responsive to pick dynamics. I've been able to get close to a warm Kenny Burrell tone as well as the more biting treble of Grant Green solo lines. The tone knobs are very good in this regard.

It's too early yet for me to say much about electronics: so far, the switch and pots seem pretty smooth. I like the stock pickups and this comes from a pickup snob of the first order. What they lack in dimension is compensated for by the wonderful tone wood and aforementioned hollow body. They do have a midrange bump which occasionally makes me wonder what a lower wind dog ear would be like. But for now I am quite content with the stocks.

It's a really handsome piece, and the Sweet H2O folks did a great prep job on it. I've been playing it as is straight out of the box. That's a testament to really great service and care.
